I've been on a real kick lately to try to actually get scared by a movie. I read your reviews about Paranormal Activity, which I was planning on seeing but second-guessing now that I've read those...

So, if Paranormal Activity was "meh," what scary movies do you recommend?

I've seen the American version of the Ring, which was LAME. Japanese movies are pretty good at scaring me...but I want some American/English-language movies you suggest!

I can't remember ever being truly scared by a movie, but I'd seriously go with virtually anything by Dario Argento if you like the whole idea of serious horror. I liked "The Car" too, but it's kinda lame. And "Killdozer". But Conan O'Brian told us to watch it.

Random Horror Movie comment: Saw "Jason X" for sale for $2 today at a book sale. If it's still there tomorrow I'll grab it in a $5 bag. I can't take that movie seriously for no reason other than "WHO THE HELL SENDS A FROZEN JASON INTO SPACE. WITH PEOPLE."

^ Glad you agree that Argento's films rank right up there among the scariest movies Trilly - something Syxxy and I have been preaching for some time now - But might I also suggest a few by David Cronenberg: 'Rabid', 'Shivers', 'The Brood', and one of his mid-period films; 'Dead Ringers'. Also, almost anything by John Carpenter, but I'll let Mr. Syxx pick it up from there.

Ok, well, I'll really simplify things with a 2 movie list.

Best American Horror Movie Ever Made. Actually, it had a British director and was filmed in England, but Fox is the studio that produced it, it had American actors/writers, and has been one of only a hand few of horror films chosen to be preserved by the American Film Institute, so it definitely qualifies.

Best Horror Movie of the Entire World. Pretty much a hands down decision for me. Nothing I think has even come close to it in pure nightmarish atmosphere, maybe except for its direct sequel and the previously mentioned film. Still I would hand it the title easily. It's Italian, but a version with English audio is readily avaiable and the lead actress is an American speaking English.

Note: The US trailer has a corny skeleton thing that doesn't actually appear in the film. XD

Gotta disagree ever so slightly about the best horror movie ever, although Suspiria is a REALLY close second, imo - It's another Argento film, but it's the straight-up giallo 'Tenebre'

And if that's not enough to scare you, there's always my perennial third pick: 'Deep Red'

these two might be a little hard to find at your local video rental place, but Netflix has both I think, and uncut if I'm not mistaken...

1. Gotta disagree ever so slightly about the best horror movie ever, although Suspiria is a REALLY close second, imo - It's another Argento film, but it's the straight-up giallo 'Tenebre'

2. these two might be a little hard to find at your local video rental place, but Netflix has both I think, and uncut if I'm not mistaken...

3. Also, almost anything by John Carpenter, but I'll let Mr. Syxx pick it up from there.
1. I'm with Laura on this one. I preferred "Tenebre" to "Suspiria" (though the latter has better OST artwork). I suppose prefrence may depend on your interests, if you like witches over a murder mystery, go with "Suspiria" (and vice versa if you like murder mysteries over witches).

2. The five films box set says the films are all uncut, no idea which ones on Netflix are. FWIW, I read that there is no official uncut version of "Phenomena" mostly cause the cut portion of film has aged to the point where it would be REALLY obvious that they added it in now.

Simultaneously, I think I'd like the movies more as a director's cut* than a MPAA cut, cause the edits would be for quality not violence**.

3. "The Thing". Still one of the best ever.

* - I prefer the theater edit over the full uncut version of "The Return of The King" though, cause the uncut version is like FOUR hours long and needlessly repetitive.

** - Fun Fact: "Scarface" is not uncensored*** in the theater. They kept trying to edit it to an R rating (from NC-17), but it never worked, and one day submitted the original cut and it managed to pull off a R for some reason.

*** - I want the censored for TV version. For the LULZ.

Yeah, look at my profile. Of course I like Tenebre. But there's reasons I chose Suspria over it. Everything in that movie is permeated with probably the most purely cinematic version of horror I can think of. From the lighting, camera work, themes, supernatural elements, surreal atmosphere, completely unexpected and imagintive death scenes, and the ridiculous creepy, booming sound track from Goblin. That movie bleeds horror to me most than any other film ever made. XD

Tenebre on the other hand is more of an extremely stylish suspense movie with some strong horror elements. In other words a Giallo. Well the best giallo I've ever seen, one of the best films I've ever seen either, and definitely technically horror (it out-slashes any other slasher movie that exists) if you want something that exemplifies what the horror genre should be at its core in the most nightmarish sense I gotta go with Suspiria.

This is a movie I had almost completely forgotten to mention - it doesn't fit neatly into any category that I can think of, but it certainly delivers the goods, and has some truly clever and bizarre twists...

Hmm, honestly I couldn't stand Fraility. Well not technically bad, I just disliked it, and I went in expecting to love it since it was endorsed by Sam Raimi and everything. Just not enough "horror" punch for me. Its more of a slow-paced film that focused on being unsettling like Misery or something (although probably not that unsettling, lol) with a M. Night Sayamalan-esque twist. One of the few times I've disagreed with you on something, Laura. XD I'm sure others can probably appreciate it more though. Maybe it just wasn't my cup o' tea.

Hmmm, I'm a little surprised you weren't into that one, maybe it is the pacing - but I found it to be genuinely creepy and atmospheric. I think the 'twist' as you say is a few steps above one of those M. Night Sayamalan Twilight-Zone rejects, but to each their own. ^_^
