T-Boz tried to talk to me!

A new Predator film is in development. Apparently, its going to take place on the Predator home planet. Normally, I wouldn't trust Fox to make anything good, but it appears the current management views the Alien vs. Predator franchise as a craptacular mess and want to start Alien and Predator over correctly (and sepparately). The real question is if they can. Apparently, this film will be made outside of the "hollywood system" and be produced by Robert Rodriquez's company (but with a different director). Kinda didn't want to see a Predators green-screen fest, but its definitely in better hands than with hacks like Paul W.S. Anderson and the Strauss Brothers. There might be a chance it comes out good.

L.A. Times interview with Rodriguez:

Robert Rodriguez has a 'crazy, intense' script for his 'Predator' revival
10:36 AM PT, Jul 8 2009

Predator is pretty Fifteen years ago, a young-gun filmmaker named Robert Rodriguez was hired to write a new "Predator" film and now, looking back, he can chuckle at the final product he delivered. "It was this crazy, intense off-world story and there was just no way it could be made. The technology wasn't there yet."

That was then, but this is now. "Predators," as it will be called, is happening and Rodriguez is producing. I sat down with him for a pleasant lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel and, as our sons sat together munching French fries and drawing pictures, he explained his plans for the summer 2010 sci-fi release.

"It's the story from that script I had written way back then," Rodriguez said. "They had hired me to write a ‘Predator’ story while I was waiting to do ‘Desperado’ back in 1994. It was crazy, this thing I came up with. So then fast-forward to now and, like, six months ago, they found the script and called me up. ‘Hey, we want to redo this franchise and we found your old script. This is where we should have gone with the series! We want to move forward.' And that's what we're doing.”

"And, like I said, back when I wrote it, the technology wasn’t there yet. I didn’t have to worry about who would direct it or anything because it was a script that just couldn’t be used."

Rodriguez has proven himself not only as a distinct voice in genre films ("Sin City," "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Planet Terror") but as a master of making big-looking hit films on relatively small budgets. Consider the three "Spy Kids" films, which are loaded with dazzle, action and gizmos; they pulled in a collective $465 million in worldwide gross but not one of them had a budget of more than $38 million.

Rodriguez, a writer/producer/director, is the modern prototype of the nimble, maverick filmmaker. Like his upcoming bizarro family movie "Shorts" (which, by the way, I've seen, and it's great -- more on that to come here at Hero Complex), "Predators" will be shot in his home state of Texas on a lean budget and so far removed from Hollywood that it is doesn't get run through the often bruising machinery of the studio. "Predators" is for 20th Century Fox and "Shorts" is being distributed by Warner Bros., but "Predators" will be clearly defined by Rodriguez and his personal style.

“They actually like that," the 41-year-old San Antonio native said. "You’re making it less expensive then they could ever make it here. Its so much leaner. and they get a movie that they can sell as a big movie, they make money off of it, especially since it didn't cost much at all. I get to keep it locked down creatively and, really, the studio is happy with that. It's almost like they get protected from themselves. They know that when some things get taken through the machine they end up overspending and making the movie worse. The movie's not allowed to breathe. That was the case with the ‘Predator’ movie. Just go make it down there in your system. We don’t know how you do it down there but somehow you make these movies very creatively and at a budget.”

The 1987 film "Predator" was directed by John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura as an elite commando team on a rescue mission in the jungles of Guatemala, where they find themselves hunted by an alien. That alien, designed by the effects team led by the late, great Stan Winston, became one of the most memorable creatures in sci-fi film history and the movie became an enduring fan-favorite that ages quite well. There was a 1990 sequel and two-crossovers with the "Alien" franchise (2004 and 2007) with varied ambitions and mixed results, but Rodriguez said the success of the first movie is still a powerful draw.

“No matter how many ‘Jaws’ movies they make, people never forget how great the first one is. You can always come back to it, people love it and they want to love it. ‘Predator’ is like that too. It’s a great premise, a great character and fans get excited when they think of what can be done with it.”

What's the plot of this new revival? "The story is on the Predator planet and, well, it’s just crazy.

It takes place off-world which is great, and there’s a lot of them out there." And what about the prey? "Let's just say if there were no predators, the humans in this story would probably kill each other."

He said he won't have to stray far from his ranch outside Austin to create the settings he needs.

"It’ll be a mix. A lot of location sets and some green scene. There’s a lot of different places in Texas I have in mind, and we have a great rebate thing there now, only 60% has to be shot in Texas. We’re scouting for locations now. You can find some alien landscapes in Texas for sure. And with the right augmentation, you can make anywhere look like anywhere now."

Rodriguez will be at International Comic-Con in San Diego this month to promote "Shorts" (his panel is July 24 at 1:45 p.m.), and if you're there, you'll want to check it out for sure. I talked to him quite a bit about his other upcoming work ("Machete," "Sin City 2," a fourth "Spy Kids" film, etc.) and you''ll find all that in the weeks to come by checking back here at Hero Complex.

I hope this reboot of Predator lives up to the hype - To be honest, I haven't been a huge fan of Rodriguez since his debut film, "El Mariachi".

Rodriguez is only producing. Director is going to be some guy named Nimrod Antal (shrugs shoulders). Still probalby going to be pretty Rodriguezesque. I liked Sin City and Planet Terror at least, but yeah I think his stile may be a bit too comic-bookish for Predator, but I could be wrong. I don't think this will really be a reboot though (at least in the way of a remake). I think their basing it off of a script for a sequel he wrote in the early 90's. Supposedly, he claims he wanted to do what Aliens did for Alien in terms of broadening its scope, hence the similar title.

Here's some more news on this film. Definitely sounding a bit better now:

Howard Berger on Predators
Predators Movie News | Posted by Darkness on 24 Sep 2009 19:49 GMT
Predators Movie NewsMovieHole caught up with KNB's Howard Berger whose company are doing the special effects on Predators. He basically just says they're going to be faithful to Stan Winston's work in the original movies.

“I just saw some photos today and they look absolutely fantastic!”, says Berger, who got his start working with Stan Winston on films like “Predator” and “Aliens”. ‘’Greg [Nicotero] is supervising and masterminding that one. So we're in pre-production on [it] right now...

...we wanted to have the Predator look as it did in the original film. We went back and looked at the original. I actually worked in the shop with Stan Winston on the first film. It was great to be able to go back to the series having not been involved in any of the sequels, and it was also great to be able to make sure we built them as Stan Winston did... They look really fantastic. There's a whole bunch of cool [Predator's] in the film, and everyone's going to be very happy that we've been very faithful to the Stan Winston designs. It's out next year. It's shooting very soon.’’

In related news, Big Island Weekly spoke to Ron Schmidt, the unit production manager on Predators, about shooting in Hawaii. Casting still hasn't been completed and sets haven't been finished. He says the story takes place with nine characters running through the jungle escaping the predator. Thanks to Darkoo for the news.

LOL at John Cena begging to be in this film, he'll never get above Vince McMahon funded b-movie crap status.

And yeah the lead being Adrien Brody is good news. He can act, and it also means we won't have an Arnold knock-off shoved down our throats.

More news on the film from the director:

Nimród Antal Talks Predators

Predators Movie News | Posted by Darkness on 29 Nov 2009 08:55 GMT
Predators Movie NewsPredators director, Nimród Antal, has spoken about the movie in a chat with ComingSoon.net. He talks about how he got the job to direct Predators, and about the cast. He implies they will be going practical for the Predator costumes as opposed to CGI. The Arnie cameo is still up in the air right now. One thing he does confirm is that the movie is being shot as a R-Rated film.

"So far, it's been great, and I think that the fans who may have been underwhelmed by the last two AVP films, I think they're in for a very pleasant surprise," he told us tentatively when asked how it was going.

Since the movie's title seemingly will include Robert Rodriguez's name even though the Austin-based filmmaker isn't directing, we were curious how involved Rodriguez was in the actual making of the movie. "Robert hired me, so obviously I'm very grateful for him giving me a shot. He is involved in the screenplay and we've had a lot of conversations, and any big decisions I want to make, I always speak to him about, but he's been very gracious and he's been letting me do my thing. He's really let me perform and he's let me dance, so again, I'm grateful to him for that."

Good things mentioned here:
1. No CGI for the Predators! Doesn't meantthere will be no CGI at all, but that's definitely a huge start for me that they'll be using real suits instead of corny bullshit that looks like it should be on X-Box.
2. R-rating. Also good. The wussification of movies trying to get a PG-13 rating had lead to the downfall of stuff like the Terminator franchise and AVP (although the director had much more to do with it sucking).
3. AVP bashing. People working on the Alien and Predator films including Fox representatives seem to like bashing the fuck out of those movies lately. Good news for me since they need to get as far away from Paul W.S. Anderson's video-game, one step above Uwe Boll, film-making and back to the basics that made those films great.

So yeah just good news so far. Some people are bitching about Rodriquez's script, but I think they may just be whiney fanboys and that script has certainly gone through some changes since the early 90's I'm assuming.

1. The downside to this is that always being good will create hype and hype leads to sadness and disappointment.

2. "Mortal Kombat" was decent. Sure as hell better than "Street Fighter" and "Super Mario Brothers".

Still, when your career highlight IS "Mortal Kombat"....

Mortal Kombat is a cheesy guility pleasure movie. I really don't know what Fox was smoking when they decided he could fill the shoes of the directors of Alien, Aliens, Predator, etc. Apparently even they know this was a bunch of crap, because people who work for Fox routinely bash the AVP franchise when discussing the new projects like Predators and the Alien Prequel.

Movies J-Syxx has never seen based on who directed them:

Resident Evil 1-3 (Especially after Romero was fired from the project. I believe one of the studio heads publicly whined about him trying to insert social commentary into the film when they just wanted a dumb, loud, video game movie aimed at teens.)
Alien Vs. Predator (Boycotted it as soon as the director was announced. A PG-13 rating didn't help either.)

Note I fucking have Paul W.S. Anderson. The only person I probably despise more is Rob Zombie and then after him Roland Emmerich. Honorable mention goes to Michael Bay.

I also decided to avoid AVPR due to the initial fan reaction. It really sounds like the worst movie ever made. It's so bad I don't even think Fox shows it on cable because they think it will do further damage to the franchises.
