T-Boz tried to talk to me!

Has anyone seen this film? I wonder if its worth looking into. It has a reputation for being a rather creepy kids movie produced in the 80's by Disney off of the rather strange Oz novels (as opposed to the MGM film). I of course have a taste for the obscure and the strange, but I think I would need a recommendation first because I'd rather shoot myself than watch most kids movies. XD

If I remember correctly, I watched this several times as a kid and liked it.

It's pretty fucking odd and creepy though. I guess that's what you get when you ask the guy who did "THX 1138" to make a kids movie. It's more "Labyrinth" than the original film. If you didn't like all the musical numbers and bright cheery stuff, this is probably the Oz movie for you.

^ Thanks for the input.

Only has a 55 percent Rotten Tomatoes, but it has 4 and half stars on Amazon, and they're not necessarily easy to please. Probably has to do with short-sighted critics who just wanted another campy watered down musical. I like the original film, but that is what is is folks.

I can't really bring myself to buy DVDs anymore for stuff that isn't anime or Argento, so isntead of waiting for a bluray I'll probably bug my brother to get me this on netflix.

I don't really like Rottentomatoes for older films as there's far less reviews and any single negative has more weight. For new films, it's decent, but some critics are still just d-bags who hate on ANYTHING.

It has a 6.6 on IMDB though, and pretty much anything above a 6.5 is worth at least one watch.

Ok, got this from the library and just finished watching it. My thoughts:

Only complaint I have is that I think it needed about another half an hour of exploring and such to flesh it out. Ending seemed kinda rushed. Maybe there's materials to make a longer director's cut or something.

Over all the feel of the film is pretty somber, creepy, gothic, and interesting. Definitely didn't expect a film like this to come out of Disney. Pretty ballsy for them. Some parts definitely seemed like they were out of a horror movie. The part with the would be electro-shock therapy was pretty disturbing, and the Knome King, the witch who cuts off people's heads, etc. were definitely scary. I could see how this could frighten little kids, but sometimes a scare is good for them. XD Parents these days I think shelter their kids from "scary" things way too much.

Special effects, puppets, art direction, acting, etc. was pretty good. Female lead did a very good job for a child actor I think.

I liked the part with lunch pails filled with ham-sandwiches growing on trees. lol

The element with the possible drowning reminded of Utena the Movie. Kind of sad if you think about it. O__O The turned into statues thing was also reminscent of the Choronicles of Narnia, but seeing as how the books this is based on probably outdate C.S. Lewis's crap by 50-30 years, it might be the other way around.

I sensed yuri subtext between Dorthy and Ozma. I know, I'm insane. :lmao:

So yeah I suggest this. It's sort of in the realm of Labyrinth and the Never Ending Story style wise, but perhaps a bit more somber and creepy. Maybe not absolutely perfect, but definitely should be entertaining even for adults.

I think I may have watched this eons ago, because some of it is giving me deja vu. I don't know if I realized it was Wizard of Oz related when I saw it though. XD
