Laura, let's compare top 10 lists, just because I feel like it. ![]() Right now, I think this is my Dario Top 10: 1. Inferno 2. Tenebre 3. Opera 4. Suspiria 5. The Stendhal Syndrome 6. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 7. Deep Red 8. Phenomena 9. The Cat 'O Nine Tails 10. The Card Player Least favorite: The Phantom of the Opera (although I give him points for trying something new) Top 4 films produced by Dario: 1. Dawn of the Dead (co-produced) 2. Demons 3. Demons II 4. The Church Argento ouevere I have yet to see: Director: Four Flies on the Gray Velvet Three Days in Milan Door Into Darkness - Il Tram (1 hour tv episode) Sleepless Masters of Horror - Jenifer (1 hour tv episode) Mother of Tears (seeing it today XD) Giallo (in production) Producer: The Sect The Wax Mask Door into Darkness (tv mini-series) Turno di Notte (tv series) Scarlet Diva (docu-drama) Also haven't seen any of the movies he wrote before he became a director, there were a lot of them including a number of spaghetti westerns. I think I've heard of that on-line, and well, the footage is not all that well preserved and wouldn't look right if they spliced it into the film. I figure Laura could answer this too, but there isn't any...order I should watch them in right? Like, I won't be totally confused if I saw "Tenebre" before "Suspiria" right? I probably will watch them in chronological order cause I'm anal like that. I spend too much time with how I orginize my DVD collections. They get put into genres (movies, TV shows, animes, music), further seperated by sub genres (animated, foreign, horror, comedy, artists) possibly more...insane sub genres (CGI animated, comedy anime vs. serious anime) sometimes into non existant genres (animes I have seen on TV before) than by seasons. |

Okie-Dokie, I'm game! XD Top 10..hmmm... 1. Tenebre 2. Suspiria 3. Deep Red 4. Opera 5. Inferno 6. Phenomena 7. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 8. The Stendahl Syndrome 9. Trauma (I'm a little surprised you made no mention of this one!) 10. The Cat O' Nine Tails Least Favorite: The Phantom of the Opera ( I cant' be as kind as you for this one, but we are in agreement - IMO a total misfire unfortunately.) Top 4 films produced by Argento: 1. The Church 2. The Sect 3. Demons 4. Zombi (Dawn of the Dead) -Not that it isn't a fave, but it's much more a George Romero film, with minimal creative input from Dario, unlike the other three here. And Scarlet Diva isn't on this list because it really isn't a horror film, but it is a good, dark semi-autobiographical movie about Dario's daughter, Asia. As far as the Argento movies I haven't seen, my list pretty much matches yours, with the two exceptions noted above. This is probably a good time to mention how jealous I am that you're seeing Mother of Tears ...XD One film I can definitely recommend as far as spaghetti westerns that Argento co-wrote is Once Upon a Time in the West - great stuff!
There shouldn't be any problem watching either Tenebre or Suspiria in any order you care to, but I would suggest watching Suspiria before tackling Inferno- not so much that it's absolutely necessary, but I think you'd get more enjoyment that way. Really most of Argento's films are stand-alone affairs, with minimal crossover, but I enjoyed watching his films in roughly chronological order just to see Argento's evolution as an artist. |

Ok, watched Mother of Tears on DVD last night. I did see in the theater during the summer like I said, but I wanted another chance to watch it to form a better opinion and could post it here. Watching it at home, it was a lot better the second time. For one my viewing experience wasn't interrupted or colored by people laughing at random times at things that were not supposed to be funny (this happens in a lot of movies that aren't bad at all). Also I could actually understand more of the dialogue due to the better sound. Also 20 percent of the picture wasn't cut off by the wrong sized movie screen. lol Watching at home I think everything seemed better: the storyline, writing, photography, the acting, and even the cgi. I gotta say this move was pretty frigging good imo. Maybe not on the godly level of Suspiria and Inferno, but at least Argento's best movie in 12 years. I would definitely consider it a good entry into the trilogy. It's nothing like it's predecessors, but I think that's a good thing actually. You can only do the unlocking of the mystery in a building plot so many times before it seems stale. This was possibly Argento's gorriest movie ever. He definitely still has his set as far as pushing the boundary of artistically filmed gore scenes, and he really went over the top in a few of these scenes. Set design and photography I felt was also quite good, a few of the scenes were obviously influenced by famous paintings, Argento's love of the arts in his films is quite apparent. Also gotta love the complete strangeness of most of this film with the monkey, howling bald guy, demons, etc. He also didn't hold back on the nudity for a change, so all these things together created an Italian flavored horror-ploitation film that really hasn't been seen for decades. I also felt the development of Asia's character was a step above a number of his films, and it helped give it that fairy tale element that films like Phenomena had. Also adding to the weirdness is the fact Asia's storyline is based off the fact that Dario claims to have received a call from the ghost of his father Salvatore Argento, and that was his major influence for the story of this film. Anyways, big thumbs up for me. I can only wait to see if Giallo continues this trend of awesomeness. I also hope after Giallo he does some more strange, supernatural type horror films, since there's only 5 so far in his oeuvre and after Mother of Tears I definitely want to see more. One disappointment that's completely unrelated to Dario though is I don't think the picture quality on this DVD is great. The contrast for one isn't good enough to the point where you can't make out anything in the darker scenes. Hopefully, the Weinsteins don't sit on their asses and not release a superior bluray soon. |

![]() thread bump'd I have finally bought a copy of "Mother of Tears" and on watching it again, I've pretty much got to agree with everything you've said in the above post. While you saw it in a theater (and believe me, I'm jealous!! lol), I had to watch it for the first time on a video hosting site, which is never the preferred way of viewing a film. But at the time I was unaware that the film had a DVD release, so I simply assumed it would be like so many other Argento films and languish on a shelf somewhere before getting a video release. This may have not been Dario's greatest film, but I thought it stood head and shoulders over "The Card Player" and was a suitable entry in the 'Three Mothers' mythos... I'm really excited about "Giallo", and from what I've read about it recently, post-production should be done sometime in December, and with any luck it will compete at Cannes early next year prior to it's theatrical release. I also understand that the writers of 'Giallo" (which is probably due for a name change sometime before it's release date) have penned the upcoming John Carpenter horror anthology "LA Gothic"... Last bit: Dario is reportedly in talks to allow a remake of "Bird With The Crystal Plumage"- I hope they don't screw it up too badly, like I'm afraid they're going to do with the "Suspiria' remake... |

Ugh, they just need to leave this alone. This would be like remaking the Godfather or something. Just leave it alone. Since Dario's new film will obviously be a giallo, I would rather him go for something more supernatural. I want to see him bring in the weird again like he has done in Inferno, Phenomena, Mother of Tears, etc. BTW, nice collage/parody in your sig. Obviously made by you since it includes some of my screenshots. XD Edited by Syxx, Nov 11 2008, 11:09 AM.

Hmmm... Judging from the trailer, which btw DOES seem awesome, I'm guessing that the reports of a name change for the film were a bit premature. The cinematography, from what I could see looks like a cross between Stendahl Syndrome and Tenebre, so it ought to be interesting visually. And as far as Dario doing another supernatural movie, that would be cool, but I personally would like to see him do something really loopy along the lines of Phenomena. 0.o |

I think Phenomena was pretty much a supernatural movie. The communication with insects, evil swiss air, etc. made it lean in that direction, although there were some giallo elements, as well. |

Wow, holy shit, DVD releases for Four Flies on Gray Velvet and Door into Darkness have been announced! Of course there's always the chance this deal could fold like the last planned release of Door into Darkness (due to No Shame's money problems) and any release of Four Flies (due to it's complex rights issues), but damn am I already pshyced! http://www.cultmovieforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15048&highlight=flies If these are released it would put 2 of his classic 70's works in the US for the first time, one being the third part of the Animals Trilogy and his giallo tv mini-series. It would also mean everything he's directed apart from his Western has been released on DVD here. Edit: Here are the Amazon.com preorder pages for them: Four Flies on Gray Velvet Dario Argento's Door Into Darkness Edited by Syxx, Nov 21 2008, 07:54 PM.

Wow! That's HUGE news! Even if it's a bare-bones rerlease, I'm in! Can't wait to see a decent release of Four Flies, and it'll be very interesting to see Dario's early T.V. work in Door Into Darkness as well! I wonder how they managed to wrest control of the rights from Paramount? Well, however they got it done, it goes without saying that me ish excited!

I just looked at the pre-order page at Amazon, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them to meet the release date of 02/24/09. It seems that there must have been some review copies released, and all indications are that the print they used as source material is nearly flawless - http://www.dvddrive-in.com/reviews/e-h/fourfliesongryvelvet7172.htm This is going to be an absolute must-have! |

Yeah they were both released. lol Four Flies has does indeed have a really good film print used. The sound is pretty lacking though, not being remixed in stereo. Still a great leap over having nothing, and the movie is awesome. Door into Darkness was also a great deal. I liked all the episodes. Only Cozzi's episode was a tad-bit dull, imo, but not unwatchable or without merit (ending was pretty cool). Il Tram and the Doll I felt were awesome. Il Tram is almost like another film from the animal series, and the Doll has really good plot and a completely ridiculous first-person mental hospital escape scene that lasts several minutes. Also I read a bit of a review from someone who saw Giallo in Paris (but not the whole thing because I don't want to be spoiled). The review was pretty positive and says its his best film since Phenomena. So can't wait to see that. I hope it gets released over here soon. Edited by Syxx, Jun 23 2009, 03:30 PM.

And I've seen it for sale in stores near me too. That five disc set I got last year seems to have vanished from stores though, if it was even available. I can't really blame them for not stocking it though, because as good as Argento's movies may be, I bet that the Saw franchise (as terrible as it may be) certainly moves more copies amongst the casual film buffs, who make up a far larger part of the movie purchasing public than us crazy die-hards who like to watch the extras and commentaries. |

The boxset was a pretty good seller I think. Maybe not as good as torture-porn bullshit, but I think it did well for Anchor Bay. It's also still very available online. There could be other reasons it's not being restocked at your store: 1. The rights for a lot of these movies are actually owned by Bill Lustig of Blue Underground DVD and were leased to Anchor Bay while he was working with them. Some of the rights could've reverted back to him ala Deep Red, Inferno, etc. That may mean that they can't print more runs of the boxset. 2. They may be trying to clear stock so they can re-release them again. I'm gonna assume Phenomena and Tenebre were remastered in HD for this set, so we may actually see Blurays which would be awesome. I wouldn't really consider Saw popular among film buffs. Maybe popular among Joe Shmoe public. Just like people who buy Dark Knight probably aren't comic book fans. I have no real opinion on Saw, because I never bothered watching them. Edited by Syxx, Jun 24 2009, 01:53 PM.

Just found out Giallo has premiered at the Edinburgh film festival in Scotland which is running from June 17-22, which I'm guessing where the very positive review came from. Gonna try to find out info about the US release. I would think it may get a wider release than MOT due to Adrien Brody starring, but either way I'm definitely seeing this on the big screen. |

Ummm, the trailer's been out now for over a month.... sry... The real point of this post is that the first review of 'Giallo' is out, and the reviewer seemed a little underwhelmed... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090629/review_nm/us_film_giallo The film WAS picked up for U.S. distribution by Weinstein, and I'll still see it when (and if) it gets anywhere near here, but if it gets a release like "Mother of Tears' that doesn't seem all that likely.... eeep... There's actually several reviews out, but I don't want to read them all because I don't want spoilers. lol As for her being underwhelmed, its just one persons opinion who may not have been that interested in the film anyways. The article seemed pretty detached regardless. It seemed more like a news article to point out that Adrien Brody made a film, as opposed to a critique. I'm not really buying that much stock in it so far. The tidbit about Argento "distancing" himself from it is interesting, but I don't know how much I buy it. Edited by Syxx, Jul 4 2009, 06:08 PM.
