Just noticed the new releases of Tenebre and Phenomena were 7 and 8 respectively for DVD Planet's best selling DVDs. The new Anchor Bay boxset was number one for horror at Deep Discount.com. Just more evidence that everyone is getting on the band wagon lately. Hopefully, this results in Sleepless and the Four Flies on the Gray Velvet getting decent releases and his films getting more recognition over boring US movies that criticis always site on their bullshit lists for best horror movies. Since I'm upgrading to the new DVDs for Tenebre and Phenomena which are anamorphic and have some new extras, I can give my old Anchor Bay DVDs to some horror deprived member who wants them. They are basically new. Only draw-back is they aren't anamorphic. This won't be a problem if you don't have a wide-screen tv. If you do, you can always press on zoom. Other wise these DVD were really good, and also include nice commentaries with il maestro. Here are the traillers for 2 said films: |

Awesome news that they FINALLY released Tenebre and Phenomena on enhanced anamorphic DVD. It's just a shame that people are only now realizing Argento's genius given the fact that, sad to say, he probably doesn't have that many more films in him...But that's always the way it is, great artists are almost never recognized during their lifetimes. At least there are those of us who knew right away on first veiwing what an incredible filmaker he really is.... |

^ Eh he's been making like a film a year for while now. I'm sure he will do plenty more. The difference though is he is actually getting money again, as opposed to having to work with nothing becuase of the collapse of the Italian film industry. I'm slightly more nervous about George Romero who really is getting ancient. lol Hope my copy of Diary of the Dead shows up soon. Edited by Syxx, Jun 13 2008, 07:57 AM.

Well I certainly hope you're right about that, but il Maestro was born in 1947, so the math is kind of working against him (and us) in that regard. And Argento has , to me at least, never given the appearance of vibrant health. He's always looked like a strong wind would blow him away....Not to say that I have his name picked for any kind of "Dead Pool", but even Argento will probably consider retirement somewhere down the line. |

He's always been a skinny ass dude. He's like an even uglier Abraham Lincoln with no beard. XD He's also a vegetarian. I don't think he's unhealthy though. I'm sure right now, he's not even considering retirement. |

20% off sale baby! Good till the 22nd IIRC. I'd jump on this but: 1. I already got free shit from Syxx before and I'd feel like a freeloading ass. 2. I'm seriously considering buying these. They are worth the $25 bucks right? Won't order til the 17th though, as I have heard that pre-orders aren't included with the sale and dammit, I want that School Rumble OVA and I'm too lazy to make two orders. And I just used to, too and two within five words. I'm proud of that. |

Yeah definitely worth that much, although buy them from http://www.dvdplanet.com or http://www.deepdiscount.com if you want to get them a lot cheaper than that. And I'd have no problem with send you more free shit, lol, just didn't notice you replied to this thread. |

That's actually the Deepdiscount price after 20% off the advertised price. If I could get them for that price or close to it from Amazon, I'd go there on accounts that Deepdiscount's shipping is REALLY SLOW. But they have better prices on like everything I want in this sale so I'm jumping on stuff there. Shame they don't have Azumanga Daioh class album in stock...or available. |

Deep Discount usually takes at least 8 days, but the important thing to keep in mind here is that their shipping is FREE. XD

People are saying that it's taking them like two weeks now, but considering my "entertainment backlog" is huge, I think I'll do fine in the waiting. I figure my horror collection could use some boosting, considering it's pretty pathetic right now, but still better than anyone whose collection is "Saw 1-4" and "Freddy vs. Jason". I think having "Susperia" and a Hitchcock box set gives me more cred than them. Sucks that I'm doubling dipping on "Peach Girl Vol 1" during this sale, but well, I'd rather buy the whole thing for $32 and save $27 rather than buy them individually for like $59. Definitely, if you thought American horror was anything Italian will blow you away. Just the difference in gore is ridiculous. Plus Argento in particular really films his movies like art. There is pretty much no equivalent, although I think the first Halloween and Phantasm are probably the closest obviously having a large Dario influence. Your nerd exerpience points will go up for sure. XDAnd I think Jason vs. Freddy technically was a family movie. Wasn't it rated PG or something? Seriously, Godzilla vs. King Kong was more graphic.

1. There's also that feeling that he REALLY has passion, loves film making and movies in general. It's the same feeling I get from Tarentino. While not movies, there's a great quote by Colin Hey (ex-Men At Work) who basically says he makes albums the way he wants them. If he only sells 5 copies, he doesn't care. And judging by the internets, "Tenebre" seems to be the best one. Both in terms of quality and fan enjoyment. 2. I've only seen like, 20 minutes of it but it's the same 20 minutes. The rave scene in the field, which I'm 99% sure is the best part in the whole movie, only cause the raver kid with glowsticks on gets impaled and flung through the air with his glowsticks going in all directions. FWIW, it was cheaper from DVDPlanet but by like 30 cents. Peach Girl is also on backorder, but they won't charge me for it until they ship it, and I think I'll get it someday as it's not a crazy OOP LE thing. |

While "Tenebre" is my personal favorite, the consensus is pretty evenly split between "Tenebre" and "Suspiria" as to which Argento film is the best. But let's not forget "Deep Red", which set the stage for all the tropes of Argento's later oeuvre, and is in itself a masterpiece of suspense and outright horror. Not to say that his previous 'Animal Trilogy' was deficient, but those films - "Bird with the Crystal Plumage", "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" (which I STILL haven't been able to find!), and "Cat o' Nine Tails" more closely followed the formula of earlier giallo in that they were more straight-up police procedurals with a twisted psychological underpinning. Though admittedly, "Tenebre" is a return to the type of storyline that was represented in the 'animal' films, it also was a quatum leap over the earlier works. Something that unfortunately, I haven't seen equaled in il Maestro's later films, although I have yet to see "Sleepless" and Mother of Tears". I don't mean to imply that films like "Phenomena" are bad, far from it. They have a certain crazy inner logic that makes them work for the most part. That film in particular is loopy as hell (in a good way) and has epic casting: Jennifer Connelly in one of her first roles, and of course, one of my favorite genre actors, the fabulous Donald Pleasance! Also,"Opera" would be another good choice for veiwing one of Argento's better, later films....^^ |

They aren't part of the box set I ordered though, but at least I'll have a fairly solid collection of various sub-genres and eras to pick a favorite place to look.
How blown away will I be if the only good American horror films I can name are "American Psycho" (which I still say is satire, but eh, internet says horror), "The Evil Dead" and the original "Halloween"? I don't think we really know how to do horror right. I think our definition is "quiet quiet quiet MAN WITH KNIFE FROM OUT OF NOWHERE!". |

Said boxset includes Tenebre, Phenomena, Trauma, the Card Player, and Do You Like Hitchcock. First two films are certified classics, imo. The other three are lesser Argento films from 1993-2005, but I still enjoyed all of them. Do You Like Hitchcock was actually a tv pilot, but still a very decent giallo in the classic sense. It also show cases Dario's new found love for yuri. XD Tenebre I think you will definitely like. Possibly my favorite Argento film, possibly contending with the equally ridiculous Inferno. You already like "Flashing" from the sound-track. Simonetti from Goblin was definitely going for an electro-dance feel to it which produced an unbelievably great and innovative movie score.
Yeah, Jennifery Connelly was very attractive in this movie even though she was very under-age. Hope I don't get in trouble for saying that, but I can't help it. XD Pleasance doing a scottish accent was also awesome.
I thougt Bird was more ballsy than that. The entire pyschopath subplot with the painting, etc. was definitely something new, not to mention all those crazy set pieces in the art gallery, etc. In fact this movie started the real giallo film trend, although it was influenced by earlier Bava films. Cat O' Nine Tails was slightly more pedestrian, but the ending was pretty great imo. Also, haven't seen Flies yet. I'll probably end up trying to find the bootleg soon. Just wanted to let everyone tomorrow I'll be going to Chicago to see Mother of Tears, the third film in Dario's Mother's trilogy and starring Asia Argento, on an actual movie-screen. I'll tell you guys how it goes. Definitely looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can get over this stupid recent e-drama and get even more hyped for it. This will be the first Argento film I have actually seen on the big screen. Too bad I don't live in Chicago, the theater has been playing a week of Arento classics like Inferno and Deep Red every night to lead up to his new epic debuting. |

Popdose reviewer Bob Cashill saw said film already and, as even though he is a fan, and will be buying the DVD, found it disappointing. In particular, there's a part where a doll representing a baby gets chucked into a river and falls apart on impact. Much like Cashill, I have never made a film, but I think I'd retake that. With all that said, there is a time in every fanboy's/fangirl's life when they get a chance to finally see their favorite thing on a massive screen, and well, I just plain couldn't turn that down that chance if it came to me. I mean, it can't be any worse than "The Happening" can it? |

Most reviewers tend to be assholes, so I don't listen to them. I've already heard it was good from actual horror fans, so I'm definitely going in with that expectation. I think Argento's Stendhal Syndrome also got dissed by some people, but that film is excelent, imho, so what do they know. This is the first time Argento has gotten a decent budget for years, so either way it will be interesting to see how he used it. |

Umm, random post to say that I did receive the box set today, and I haven't watched it yet so I can't give a review of picture quality or how uncensored they really are, but even if I did watch them, since I've never seen any previous DVD/VHS releases/TV airings and don't know about what was cut in previous versions, so I could not tell you just how good those two things are. However, I will admit that they come in one really nice tin (mine arrived in mint shape, which is a worry when ordering tins), put together solidly and will look quite good on your shelf. It does suck that the DVDs are packaged in a "layered" fashion like "Miami Vice" Seasons 4+5 (posssibly 3 too) and WWE's Undertaker DVD so if you placed say, "Tenebre" over "Susperia" and wanted to watch "Suspiria", you'll have to remove "Tenebre" first. Just a minor irritant I have with layering, but it shouldn't really be taken as a deal braker when considering a purchase. |

Yeah the DVDs are very uncut as you will soon find out, as is the case with most of Anchor Bay's stuff. I believe there exists a slightly longer version of Phenomena with some slightly longer cuts on camera shots of things, but the version you has all the gore and important plot stuff.
Glad I went for the new singles then. Thinpak boxes> everything else. |
