Gotta say that horror is pretty dead to me right now, especially due to Hollywood has to remake every single movie. It's gotten to the point of parody. Some hack director is apparently going to remake Suspiria. Not only that he was enough of a pretentious dick to be interviewed by MTV and run down the original as a 70's gore flick with plot-holes. Note if you think a movie not being linear enough for babies to understand is "plot holes" and the only thing you can remember from this movie is gore, you are a freaking idiot. I swear I hope this guy gets ran over by a truck. He doesn't deserve to shine Dario Argento's shoes. At this point, I just hope horror goes back to being unpopular. Like hip hop, it's been raped and bastardized by people who have absolutely no respect for it or knowledge of where it came from. Hopefully, this movie is never made. Suspiria can not be remade period. It is a singular artistic expression that could never be recreated or "improved" upon. [/angry rant] Side Note: Don Coscarelli canceled the Phantasm remake they had been talking about for a while, becuase he owns the rights to the name. He could've made money off of it, but he didn't want anyone raping his film like others have done to Halloween, Black Christmas, etc. He is my hero. Edited by Syxx, Aug 2 2009, 12:08 PM.

Right at this particular time in film history, the horror genre IS dead....BUT it's important to remember that genre flms (horror movies especially) have cycles of popularity and dormancy. Unfortunately for us true fans of the genre, we're at a (very) low ebb in the creative cycle, it's carcass being fed upon by hacky, bottom feeding no-talent bums...But eventually someone will come out with an original vision and the cycle will begin again. There is surely another Don Coscarelli (or Dario Argento, or David Cronenberg) out there, either in film school or making an indy production ( like Sam Raimi or George Romero did), waiting to take horror films to the next level. I personally can only hope it's soon though.. I've had enough of idiots like Rob Zombie or Eli Roth to last several lifetimes. And don't get me started on that stem-whacker David Gordon Green again, Mr. Syxx, I may stroke out!! XD |

There is a difference between now and then though. A lot of these films we like got most of their play at places like "grind houses" and drive-ins. Those places really don't exist anymore. By the 90's they were all closed. With consolidation, I've noticed creativity is the first victim. Same thing happened with the radio and hip hop. So when horror made it's come back we got Scream and a million Scream knock-offs. Then we got the Ring-remake and a million asian knockoffs, then a million torture porn movies, and a million remakes of films that were already fine in the first place. Sure there were a lot ok knock-offs back then, but I think there was at least some variety in the formula. Also to go was the NC-17 and un-rated movie. Over all movies were a lot tamer than they were in the 70's and 80's. Then there's the concept corporations have that movies have to appeal to everyone, so directors actually have to change their vision becuase of test audiences. But over all none of these newer directors interest me at all. The fact someone like Rob Zombie actually got hype is really sickening. Gotta say I'm slightly more pessimistic than you. When corporations run things they just want to recreate the same thing a million times, appeal to a million groups at the same time, force directors and writers to only bring them what they want, and a bunch of other BS. Independent film-makers really don't have much of a prayer for their films becoming big successes these days. So the idea of a modern Halloween, Evil Dead, or Phantasm (all independent films) is more than a bit questionable, imo. Personally, I think there needs to be some fundamental changes to the status quo here for things to get better. I'm just really, really sick of Hollywood: http://youtube.com/watch?v=k6MlwT1lBk0 |

^ You're absolutely right about me being a little more optimistic about the future of independent horror films, but with a fairly sound reason: Hollywood's grip on film in general is continuing to erode with the advent of increasingly sophisticated alternatives; home video and the internet just to name two. And especially with the internet, there looms on the horizon the possibility of the 'Digital Grindhouse', using the youtube concept as the basis for a completely new business model, where independent filmakers will be able to market their own films with minimal intrusion from 'The Suits'. This isn't as far-fetched as it might appear at first, as there are a lot of small indy shorts already starting to crop up here and there, and I really think this trend is going to continue... So i guess I'm saying that all hope is not lost, the fans just have to hang in there and wait out the last gasps of the archaic, dying beast that is the traditional Hollywood machine, and that the future of genre film may not be as dismal as feared... In fact it may be glorious! |

I'm with Laura on this one. Youtube and MP3 sites have done SO much to give the local indie director and bands so much worldwide exposure. I mean, Tay Zonday goes and posts "Chocolate Rain", gets popular, and now he's shilling for Dr. Pepper. As great as "anime episodes" and "old cartoons" are, the way the internet has rescued and given an opportunity to people who previously wouldn't have a cheap way to get their product out is a step in the right direction on saving media. And the forgotten stuff too. If it wasn't for people sharing MP3s, I probably wouldn't have found HALF the stuff on my iPod, and a good amount is live bootlegs and OOP albums. |

The dubbing in Suspiria isn't bad. LOL It's an exploitation-era international film. Those things were dubbed into every language they were released in. They were filmed without sound. Compared to a lot of dubs I don't recall this one being bad. Having big, yellow letters taking up half the screen doesn't make something better, Kikyou, I'm sorry.

I think exploitation era horror movies sound better with poor dubbing. It adds to the charm. Speaking of "cheesy 70s films" isn't "Italian Spider Man" supposed to be out next month? It better have a DVD release, cause I'd be all on that. |

Just want to note Kikyou is my friend, she really doesn't mean it when she acts like a total bitch to me. ![]() Dubbing for Italiano movies really isn't that bad. Definitely far superior to the dubs that came out of Japan or Hong Kong. Wouldn't mind having Italian Spider-Man on DVD. Omg.. I am SO totally going to watch 'Italian Spiderman' if it gets a DVD release! On an only slightly more serious note, a lot of Italian exploitation films were actually shot in english (with the exception of the non-english speaking actors roles) and then dubbed into the respective languages the film was to be released in. This was a fairly common method of filming these type of films, due to the need to use english-speaking actors for the lead roles, plus the increased marketability of english language films. I'm not making this up, I actually heard this in an interview with (wait for it....) John Saxon!

Yeah that is correct. Don't know why I said they were filmed without sound, but the result is the the same, they were dubbed into every language they were released in. |
