Maybe it's a sign of a mental defect, but I've always had a weakness for giant radioactive reptiles from Japan, ever since seeing Destroy All Monsters on TV when I was little. Are there any other fans of this admittedly low-rent, but extremely enjoyable genre? If so, what's your favorite film? Do you like the old (showa) movies, or the newer (heisei) flicks? And why do any American attempts at this genre suck ass so badly? Please discuss... Posted Image

Yeah I've been a fan since I saw Godzilla Raids Again, which was awesome when I saw it. Definitely a fan of the Showa and Heisei era flicks. However, I haven't reallly enjoyed much of what I've seen made after Godzilla vs. Destoyah. I don't know what's wrong with the newest series, but I just wasn't feeling it very well

My favorite film is definitely Godzilla vs. Biolante. I just loved the dark, scifi feel in that one. And everything else that went into it (the psychich girl Miki, plant monsters, assassins from fictional countries who drive Supras) was amusing too. I think they should've kept that darker feel for more of the movies that followed. Godzilla vs. Destroyah was the closest to recreating that.

As for the older ones I've always been a big fan of Godzilla vs. Gigan and Terror of Mechagodzilla.

My favorite kauji are probably Godzilla, Anguils, and King Ghidorah.

American's attempts at remaking any genre, including kaij, always suck becuase they have to water it down, even something as rudimentary as a giant, rubber-suit monster movie. So with the American Godzilla it turned mostly into a romantic comedy starring Matherw Broderick, and Godzilla is made "more realistic" so that he no longer has nuclear breath and can get killed by a couple of measily missiles. It's pretty sad lame these film-makers are. They always have to try to make every movie appeal to everyone, thus it loses what ever substance or appeal it had in the first place. It's even sadder that they couldn't improve on movies that used rubber suits with millions and millions of more dollars for special effects. XD

And Godzilla is getting lucky. lol

I know what you mean about the Milennium series, but it does have it's moments. Godzilla vs Biollante is certainly up there as one of the best of the Heisei, with a very melancholy, lyrical tone, although my personal favorite from that era has to be Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. Mecha KG was an incredibly imaginative monster, The Dorats were uber-cute, and Emi absolutely rocks! Android M-11 (or Terminator rip-off guy) was pretty goofy, but that only added some great comic relief from the otherwise stridently nationalistic tone of the rest of the film- I guess it's really hard to find any decent English- speaking actors in Japan, I don't think I've ever seen a good one in ANY Toho movie. I like most of the kaiju in all the series, but I suppose my LEAST favorite would have to be King Seesar (even I have my limits!). And while the American movie industry stinks at these films, the British DID do it right at least once, with Gorgo. And to be fair, the Japanese screw it up as well, as witnessed by the nearly unwatchable showa period Gamera movies ( I'd like to strangle that little fat kid, Kenny! ) Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

The worst for me has to be Minilla. Doesn't get lamer than him. He should've been eaten by another Kauju or something. XD

Favorite Godzilla actress would be Megumi Odaka who played the pychic, Miki, in the Hesei series. Oddly now that I think about it, I think she had gone yuri in Destroyah although she had a bf in Space Godzilla. Unless I am imagining that. XD I need to watch some of these films again.

The last time I watched Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (II) was probalby more than a decade ago from a bootlegged tape I got when I was a kid. I think I was just mad it wasn't like Godzilla vs. Biollante very much, becuase that was definitely one of my favorite movies as a kid. I probalby need to pick up a DVD of it sometime, to give it another chance. I still have the bootleg but the quality is terrible.

Also something else about Biollante, Sueper-X II was bad-assed. It made Super-X look like a piece of shit. XD To bad Super-X III wasn't as cool.

And thanks for those cool pics!

Here's a very good site for tons of Kaiju pics, in addition to loads of horror images. Not NWSF, just really good stuff for the Fanboy (or Girl!) in all of us! http://www.monsters-movies.com/gallery/ind...p?cat=30&page=1 There's an English version as well but the pics speak a universal language!
