Here is a little trick I ran accross for beating the spam bots that invade message boards. They are like ants. Once one finds it's way in you will be invaded <_< First create a new member category. Then amend your Member group so that they cannot start a new topic, use the pm system, or email from the board. Set it so that members will be promoted out of this group into the new group after a small number of posts. I would say less than 5. Now bots will not be able to start a topic selling their product. They will also not be able to send your members spam. If you have a smaller forum you can move everyone into the new category manually. Otherwise, they will move up as soon as they make their next post. |

ok while they aren't posting anymore I am still getting up to 20 spam bots a day registering. Since many of their emails are similar I have wildcard banned some email addresses. Lets see if that helps *@mail.ru *@cashette.com *@gawab.com

Why not simply limit new members to a specific forum for their first 5 posts? If it's a spambot, it'll most likely leave only one post, so it will be easy to indentify and eliminate it. |

keeping new members from starting a new thread for their first 2 posts completely stopped the bots from posting. But still it was a pain in the ass having them join. Literally one day I had to delete 20 accounts. it has now been two days since I had one join

I think it discourages membership as well. I had it for a while but I am back to email validation. With a really wide email ban list. I just have to accept the member numbers in the thousands. Since even ones that don't finish the registration still get assigned a number. |
