Preparing Magic Each spell has a dot rating, which determines how many Willpower points it costs a magician to prepare the spell. A magician who has spells prepared must never go below 1 Willpower point or he'll go insane, the power and lore eroding his mind. The magician can only prepare up to his Willpower in spells. Willpower points do recover as normal, even with spells prepared, thus allowing a magician to fully prepare over a course of two days minimum of work. A Merit exists that is worth 3 points per level that allows a magician +1 to his effective Willpower, but only to prepare spells; this does not include a Willpower point! Preparing one spell takes a number of minutes equal to its dot rating times 10. The mage must not be distracted during this time! Example: Marizian the Magician has Willpower 8. He has access to The Excellent Prismatic Spray (a OO spell, or 2-dot spell), The Spell of the Vanishing Hour (a OO spell), and Phandaal's Mantle of Stealth (a OOO spell). He prepares all three spells, costing him 70 minutes and 7 Willpower points. He then retires to his couch for the evening with some wine. Casting Magic Casting a spell erases it from the caster's prepared spells list. It does not cost Willpower dots or any other resource to use the spell. The caster then rolls his dice pool, which is always Willpower + Attribute + Skill. (In other words, Resolve + Composure + another Attribute that's appropriate + a Skill that's appropriate.) Casting a spell counts as a simple action. Example: Marizian, with Prismatic Spray, Vanishing Hour, and Mantle of Stealth prepared, Marizian prepares to confront a rival magician known as Jorovir the Black-Robed. The two eventually clash, and Marizian uses an action to cast Prismatic Spray. Jorovir, having prepared an action, uses a shielding spell that Marizian hasn't seen before, which disperses his combat spell with ease! Learning Magic A magician must acquire a special Merit worth 2 Merit dots. Only then can he properly use magical spells. ~~~~ This is a rough example, of course. |
