There are no more members of the month! I got tired of never changing it! So you can all suck it! AHAHA!

Welcome!

If you're new here, come to our main forum:
Webcomic RP Central
and come chat with us.
No, it's not necessarily about webcomics at all.
That's just the name we have for it.

We're looking to prune down the forums,
so if anyone has any boards they requested
up that they're SURE they aren't
using anymore, please contact me so I can
get rid of it and make the forum look nicer.

4E Critics Make Me Sick; Seriously

It has come to my attention many times over the few years that the 4th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons has been around that people hate it. Loathe it. Treat it like the bastard child of Hitler and Satan. And of course, there's the justification - 4E has more problems with its every paragraph, every sentence, every word, than 3.5 ever did. Or heck, 2E was the best of them all - 3E and 3.5 were just the beginning of the decay of D&D.

Grow up.

Yes, it has flaws. No, it's not perfect. Yes, it could do better with flavor and crunch on many things. No, they're not improving it or working on redoing it.

But can you SERIOUSLY blame them with how much work they put into this?

I admit, I like 4E. I also like Naruto, used to like DBZ, and some other anime-type stuff fills my niche, so that should tell you where I'm coming from. But unlike the naysayers of 4E, I have a LIFE outside of snickering at a game. Because that's what it is - a game. People are supposed to enjoy it. If you don't, don't play. It's that simple.

Here's what some people are saying:

That is the shittiest, most retarded crap I have read in a long time, and I read the codex almost daily.

D&D has been a roaring avalanche of shit, rumbling ever downwards, since the "publish everything!" profit drive of the late 80s. 3E did a few nice things by cleaning up some mechanics. But the collectible feat mini-game, and Wal-Mart approach to magic items more than offset that.

Welcome to 4e, where the developers go out of their way to make everything as painfully generic as possible. They also LOVE emo anti-heroes. No, they seriously do. I'm not just fucking around - Races and Classes mentions several times that they hate paladins and aasimar because they think good guys are boring. Also enjoy your new humanoids who are little more then humans with scales or humans with pointy ears, and new tieflings which missed the entire fucking point of tieflings and are now all one uniform race that all look alike.

Xenu actually makes more sense than the forgotten realms.

All that came from ONE THREAD.

And someone in the same thread quoted wizard flavortext and just wrote "......" at the end, like he couldn't believe it.

For the love of all that exists, LISTEN TO YOURSELVES. You sound worse than the "extreme-power-fantasy munchkin kids who can't stand the fact that there are beings in the game world they can't one-hit-kill".

As I have said, I am not denying the flaws. When someone tells me a flaw, I listen, and I typically say, "Okay, yeah, that could be done better". The exception is the power system, which, while it could be redone, actually fits a niche that I play sometimes. I find it thrilling to fling 2d4 + Int modifier force damage every round, instead of 1d4 + 1 force damage a few times a day, with extra missiles at higher levels of experience.

Though perhaps they should have made it an entirely separate product and tried to go the "BESM d20" route or something, I dunno. It may have made people happier. But pleasing people is like fooling them: Some all the time, all some of the time, but never all all of the time. Except some people will go mother-fucking rant golem at the drop of a hat, but it's not as funny.

Let me ask you naysayers three questions:

Have you ever tried to make your own RPG?
Have you ever published said RPG?
How successful was your venture?

If you can't say "Yes, Yes, and Very" to those questions respectively, you have no right to complain the way you do. Instead of tearing down something that you could very well enjoy (or is that your fear, that you'll be branded Weeaboos?), why not make something better? The guys making the Tome of Necromancy, Fiends, and more are doing that to fix 3.5. I can respect that (and their opinions) no matter how much they bash 3.5 or 4E. Same for Paizo, who made an RPG and sold it successfully. And better yet, Paizo didn't bitch and moan - they asked for solutions from us. And the Tome guys tear down 3.5's flaws systematically, methodically, and logically. They don't say, "this sucks" or "this blows", they give reasons why it doesn't make sense.

You people are entitled to your opinion. Just as you're entitled to drag the rest of us down by living in your mom's basement, never kissing a girl, and generally being losers your whole life. On the bright side, at least you'll never breed. But some of us don't require tearing down what others have built to get off or have enjoyment in our lives. I get enjoyment from making things, myself - whether collaboratively or not. Anyone can be an art critic, and it doesn't take much forethought to destroy as compared to building. At least I have a life outside of bitching. At least I can go outside without hissing at the bright light. At least I know what a sky is.
