I am in complete agreement. I am a mediocre (at best) in the kitchen, and love the shortcut that potatoes and rice offer, so we were eating them too often, especially because we like them too. If I could find a way to work around and find a healthy alternative, I'm interested....

Well I am furiously looking online for a link to the tune that my Zojirushi water heater plays when I push the timer button at night before I go to bed. It is a tune you would recognize but I don't know the name. I found one YouTube video with a song, but it is not the song that mine plays! Gah! It goes like this: dooo deee dooo dooo doooo dooo dooo deee dooo dooo deee dooo dooo dooo dooo dooo So if you can figure that out then you are very clever!!!!

I'm pretty sure that's the "Rice is done" song as well. I love funny little Japanese appliances. |

I get my brown jasmine rice at Trader Joe's, and the brown basmati rice usually comes from the bulk section of a hippie store or Whole Foods. You can get them on Amazon, too. If your husband is anti-mush, the jasmine rice is probably your best bet. Also, while I don't do it this way...some people swear by Cook's Illustrated's oven-baked brown rice recipe. http://kitchen-parade-veggieventure.blogspot.com/2006/03/by-request-cooks-illustrateds.html |

We have a small Cuisinart rice cooker. Got it for a last minute 'husband' gift at christmas, now use it several times a week. It cooks way more than plain rice. like all those box/bag rice mixes and lots of other stuff. Hated HATED cooking rice as neither of us were good at it, and usually screwed it up. Now love tossing in ingredients, punching the button and doing some thing else. Fun! To experiment... |
