There is a local small nursery that I have shopped at for the 14 years I have lived here. I love it, I like the people and of course the plants and flowers. I often have wondered what it would be like to work there. So a few days ago, I stopped in to get some thistle for my Gold finches, and the owner was there, older gentleman, very quiet but nice. So We were chatting, He seemed upset about something, and decided to tell me about his newest employee, and how she was a bit inappropriate around men customers, Flirty, etc. He said he has had nine people, regulars all say something negative about her. He said I should let her go but she quit her job full time to come and work for him. I said well you have to do what is best for your business and you. I said well if you want an old lady who loves gardening to come work for you, Give me a call. He looked at me, said put your number down here, and I will have my Wife Carol call you. I> thought, gee, okay. figured nothing would come of it. NExt day, Thursday, she calls and says can you come in tomorrow at 1 and see what you think? >Umm.. sure. So yesterday I come in, Mind you I know the place like it was mine from all the years of shopping there. So she says you can run the cash register in the greenhouse. Okay.. I used to have a pet store, YEARS ago, so I am no stranger to the cash register or a credit card machine. So off I go, Big book of prices, most stuff has tags on them, Cash register is marked. Was not too bad. I am way too chatty, And love to talk to folks about plants, People who like plants are like horse people, Love to talk about them. LOL So It was busy, not like it will be but heck she left me alone, I think I undercharged someone once, but that was it. Did not stiff anyone change wise. Swept when there was no customer to wait on, organized benches of flowers as stuff got sold. IT IS HOT IN THERE! Even with a good breeze yesterday it is HOT. And it was only 80 My feet are killing me today, I have rotten feet, But so anyway she says, Well what do you think? I said, Not bad, as soon as I memorize the prices. I said when would you want me, she says well tom never really does a schedule.. Huh? I need to at least know when I am working, not calling me up in the morning and saying can you work? It is really laid back, I do not know what he pays, I have to tell them today if I want the job. I think at most it will be 25 hours a week. And with my postings I do for the Ex, that will be good to support my hopefully soon to be purchased house. Agh, I have not worked in a regular job in seven years. What do you think? Feed back PLEASE!!!

I think a business like that would be LUCKY to get an employee like you - mature, reliable, interested in the subject matter, friendly and experience. Tell them what YOU need, and make them provide that for you in order to take the job. I highly doubt that the guy really doesn't do a schedule; it sounds more likely that he has a "basic" kind of schedule and then people get added in based on anticipated demand. But certainly they must have a base number of staff schedule on a regular basis and you should demand to be one of them. As for pay, you need to know. Don't take the job before you know these things. Call back and tell that you are really interested in the job, but need to know the pay, and that you'd need a fairly regular schedule. My guess is that they will give you this if you ask for it, but not necessarily if you don't. I think you should consider taking it if they give you what you need. It sounds kind of fun.

Yup kind of what I was thinking, This is going into their busy season, now to Memorial day, And I know they have several employees, but not full time, which is fine. But yes, Knowing how much they pay and some idea of a schedule is important. I am going to go chat with him this morning. Thanks Trial.. Now I just need to deal with my FEET!

I'm jealous! That sounds like an awesome job. (Well, as long as they pay decently and are willing to work out a schedule for you.)Consider giving Superfeet insoles a try. They aren't soft, but they do a very good job of supporting your feet. I use them in my hiking boots on everything from 2-mile easy hikes to 8-mile hikes up mountains with rock scrambles. My vet friend swears by Danskos (winter) and Crocs (summer). Good luck!!

I think that would be a fun job and you might be able to help the owners get organized with all the aspects of the business. Maybe they know about plants, but have no clue how to run the business. Buy good, supportive tennis shoes and replace them often as they wear down. Good luck! I think it sounds like a lot of fun. |

I thought you weren't buying a house, but wanted to travel? I'm so confused. I hope whatever you chose in whatever circumstance gives you some sort of peace and happiness in your life someday. |

I think if you can work out the details with the owners like pay and schedule, it sounds like a great job for you, also assuming your feet can handle it. You are very interested in plants, etc. and have knowledge, and are mature and reliable. They would be lucky to have you! Even if you want to travel, you can always work for a while, save some money, and then go have adventures. Good luck and keep us posted!! |

Well I did not repost about that, as I seriously needed to decide what I really wanted not what others thought I should do. And when the thought of leaving Michigan and starting all over in a strange place sunk in My heart said WAIT, you like it here. 30 years here. And I just decided that I was going with my heart, So yup I am looking hard and serious. But so the job, I stopped by this morning, Boss was there, I said Hi Tom, So whats the decision? Do you know sot of when you would like me, 3 days, 4 days? He said pick the days that work for you, And go to talk to my wife.. I said okaaay. How much, He told me, its not a bunch, but it is better than a sharp stick in the eye. And it is fun. Soo I go and talk to Carol, I said soo Tom told me to talk to you about a schedule, She rolled her eyes and sighed, and said okay, When do you do your other work, I said well Tues and Thursday but that is flexible, She said can you work Tomorrow half a day, I said Okay when, She said can I call you later and let you know.. That was at 11 am, its 7:35 PM now, No word. I don't know what to think.. Kind of frustrating. I will not have a job no matter how fun, where they call me up and expect to to come in with no notice. Odd. I asked him if I screwed anything up bad yesterday, he saidn NOOO You did great. SO who knows.

Sounds a little odd for sure. On the face of it, it looks like it would be a very nice job for you, nice place to work, etc. But if they can't even give you a schedule ahead of time, let alone concretely discuss your pay, it might not be worth it! Keep us posted. |
