This is a spin-off from the lower back pain thread. I recently started seeing a chiropractor and I notice that it's definitely helped my neck, shoulder and upper back pain. I started going 3 weeks ago and have gone once a week since. He wants me to come twice a week, but I just don't have the time. Do you see a chiropractor? How often do you go? (Or....when do you go?) |

OK, I will start by saying I have never been to a chiropractor. But, I have one for my dog, so I do have some "experience." It seems to me that twice a week seems oddly soon to have to "readjust" your spine -- why isn't it staying put (assuming the chiro "fixes" or "unsticks" the spinal joint), or why can't the chiro get it to where it should go and needs you to come back? I like my dog's chiro/vet, and she did a clinic for us at our dog club "fun day" and explained basically what she looks for, does during an adjustment, and how this affects a dog's movement, etc. My dog's chiro prescribes "PT" for dogs with serious/difficult issues, and also for dogs with no issues - but talks about strong core muscles helping balance and soundness... It seems that needing an adjustment twice a weeks is very soon - so either there is a problem that is not being resolved, or something else is going on. In comparison (and granted, it's a dog that wasn't having a *problem* per se), but his first visit was followed two weeks later to see whether the adjustment stayed, or if things changed, and since then we go every 4-6 weeks or longer. Grain of salt - of course - dog can't tell me if he's in pain or uncomfortable. I'm curious to hear other replies on this also. (ETA: my dog chiro rides horses, and her husband is an equine vet/chiro. She said that he made her get her spine adjusted because he had to keep adjusting her horse - potentially due to her own misalignment. I would be happy to ask her about her own chiro schedule the next time I go if you want!)

Starting off going more frequently is not unusual. I go now every 2-4 weeks but when I'm having a more acute issue I may go 2 times a week for a couple weeks. I also find a massage before or after helps me hold adjustments more. Just do what works for you:-P |

I was going 2 times a week before I moved. At 1st it helped a lot! Then not so much! Mine is changes in my neck and a pinched nerve in my neck! I am better now! Nothing to do with the Chiro! |

I am sure there are situations where going more frequently makes a difference - I would just want to be told why. E.g. something that has been "stuck" for a while may have adhesions that will repair/heal after an adjustment and become stuck again; so maybe until those adhesions can be fully "broken" it makes sense to go more frequently. I would just expect a chiropractor to explain this to his/her patients, and then map out a longer term plan - if, for some reason, you are continually "out" or "stuck" in the same joint, what is the reason and how to fix it (through physical therapy, or massage, or stretching, etc.). If the chiropractor isn't explaining things like this to the patient, I wouldn't be happy. Just like many other physical ailments, I would want to be "fixed" and not just be treated - so at what point are you "done" with treatment, or at least regular treatment? That's what I would want to know. |

I my chiropractor. I have been going to the same one for probably 20 years. I now go every 3 weeks, but I have moderate scoliosis and really need an adjustment at least every 3 weeks. It makes a huge difference. My husband goes now too, after saying for years that it wouldn't help him. After fighting a fire at work he will always make an extra trip to the chiropractor, and says it helps him recover from the fire quicker. My daughter has been going since she was small, and has mild scoliosis too, so she goes every 3-4 weeks. My son has been fine, but my chiropractor always gives him a quick check when he is with us.It is not unusual at all to go a couple times a week at first. Your muscles need to be "trained" to keep the vertebra in alignment where they are supposed to be. I have had a couple times, like after I was in an accident, that I had to go a couple times a week for a few weeks, then gradually back off. But I love my chiropractor and he always explains things well. Massage and yoga do help my back and help me hold adjustments better, but unfortunately I don't get massage very often. When I am good about doing yoga my core muscles are stronger and help my back. And I agree - it's just like any other doctor. You need one you trust, and who gives you thorough explanations.

When I first saw a chiro, I went three times the first week. Twice the second, then weekly, then monthly, then as needed. |

Ditto what naters said. When my back injury was fresh and serious, I was going 3x a week, sometimes even 4x a week. It's been about 12 weeks since I started, and I'm now going to the chiro every 6-7 days. Eventually, my chiro wants to wean me down to coming in once every 3-4 weeks. It definitely helps to have a chiro who is patient with questions. I was VERY against the concept of chiropractic, and I had never used one before this back injury. Now that I've tried it, I regret not trying it years ago. The results have spoken for themselves, not only in my health but also in my riding. All sorts of equitation problems that I blamed on "getting older" or "losing that natural touch that teenagers have" turned out to be related to my crooked back. |
