Things to do in Atlanta?

I'm going to be heading to Atlanta in June for a horse show and it will be my first experience with the city. The show is actually in Conyers, which I believe is about 30 min. outside of the city. I will be there from Wednesday through Sunday and will have a good bit of time to explore the city, as I'll only have one horse, one class each day, and a full day off from the show.

Any restaurant recommendations? Things you can recommend I do while I'm there? I will have a hubby and a 2 year old in tow, so if you have any kid friendly recommendations, as well, (things my child can do while he's there that aren't horse show or tractor oriented) I'd very much appreciate it!

The coca cola factory tour is supposed to be super cool. I bet D would love it! I think the Atlanta Zoo is also very well regarded.

You can't miss Fat Matt's Rib Shack. Best BBQ ever.

I've also heard the Coke factory tour is very cool. I'm pretty sure you can also take a tour of CNN headquarters.

If you want a little road trip (and a trip down memory lane) you can go to Babyland General in Cleveland, GA and see all the Cabbage Patch Kids. You actually can go there and pick out your own doll right out of the cabbage patch. The child in me really wants to go do this one day.

The Georgia Aquarium, for adults the Atlanta History Museum, Margaret Mitchell House, and tons of museums and art galleries. The Civil Rights tour sites, and CNN are fun for grownups. I think they have LEGOLAND there also. Atlanta magazine might be online too, and Southern Living will have articles about touring Atlanta. The visitor and tourism bureau will have tons of brochures, and suggestions too: http://www.atlanta.net/

What ISN'T there to do in Atlanta? Some good ones have already been mentioned. You must catch a meal at either Mary Mac's tea room or the Varsity (kidlet will LOVE the Varsity). The Cyclorama is the #1 best attraction in the city, IMHO. Lennox and Phipps malls if you like shopping. Stone Mountain if you like to hike/bike. Underground Atlanta if you want to get stabbed (haha, mostly joking not entirely). Centennial Olympic Park. A Braves game. Art museum. Margaret Mitchell house. The zoo is ok, I am spoiled being from Pgh but if you aren't in a city with a ridiculous zoo, the Atlanta zoo is nice. They have pandas. And this is not for the kids but if you can steal away- no trip to Atlanta is complete without a visit to the Claremont Lounge. Pensioners home for old strippers.

Food... mmmm... where do I START?

Buford Highway for any kind of ethnic food the world has ever seen
La Fonda Latina (small chain) for cuban/portugese/spanish
Fellinis (small chain) thin crust pizza
Taqueria del Sol for Mexican
Iberian Pig if you're a bacon fan (there's a bacon infused whiskey)
Flying Biscuit for diner/breakfast
Thai Chili (duh, Thai)

JEALOUS!

I am jealous, too. Conyers is a beautiful show grounds and Atlanta is such a great place.

Restaurants come and go pretty quickly so what is great today does not mean that it will be there tomorrow. Of course, the classics are still there like V mentioned.

On that side of town, I would go to Stone Mountain. It is worth the time. I always look for Stone Mountain when I fly in to Atlanta.

I went to the aquarium a few years ago for a company event. It was so crowded (and a Tuesday evening). I was 20 people back from the glass. I am tall and still could not see.

With a little research, you will find days and days of fun times. I miss living there, but I don't think I could go back because of the traffic.

The aquarium is huge and I could spend all day there. With a kid, I don't think World of Coke will take you that long. Make it to the top floor for the taste testing :)

I bought tickets for the Aquarium for Saturday and will stop in to the Coca Cola museum and/or the zoo on one of the week days, because I can't imagine it will sell out then (but will call them just to make sure)! If we don't make it to the Coca Cola museum during the week, we'll try to fit it in on Saturday, since it's right next door to the aquarium!

Thanks for all the help!
