It is looking more certain that my DD will be getting married to a Naval officer in the near future. His next assignment will probably be either San Diego or Everett, WA. Both would be great places for her to live I'm sure but what about Sammy? She will more than likely take him if possible. Anyone know what the boarding situation is like in either place? And how do I cope with her so far away.....but that's another topic. It's not an immediate move but probably in the 6 month to a year time frame. Any thoughts from the West Coasters? |

While it is true that Everett and San Diego ARE in the West Coast of the USA, asking about them in the same question is like asking about horse keeping in New York and South Carolina. The answer to San Diego is hot, dry, expensive on tiny dry lots for the most part. Lots of pipe corrals, little turn out. San Diego is pretty much desert. Inland you can get "pasture" board sometimes, but it's dirt and sagebrush. |

Hi Desilu! I live in Everett There is a great horse community here in Western Washington. It all depends on what your daughter wants to do. I am very lucky to be able to board my horse at Polestar, an eventing barn. Meika takes great care of the horses and has wonderful turnout. Most of the AA H/J barns are a little south/east of Everett and tend to be more expensive. Flying Changes is a great resource for trainers and barns. I have lived here for 30+ years and know the scene quite well, so feel free to ask any questions. The show scene is very active up and down the West Coast (Canada to California). It does rain a lot, but when it is nice, it is BEAUTIFUL! If she wants to email me about Everett, etc... PM me. I would be happy to answer any questions. Kim |

all I can say is that i LOVED San Diego when we were in CA last month. Although I can't imagine a horse being very happy in the immediate surrounds. Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano areas, yes, but San Diego, like K said, is very desert. |

Thanks everyone. I realize they are very far apart but was curious the differences. I wondered if San Diego was a part of the dry lot, little turn-out, part of California. Kim, so glad to know there are great places in Everett and that she will have a connection there. I know she will like living in either place and it really isn't up to her where they will be assigned. I am just trying to slowly wrap my head around her going, with or without Sammy. :-) |

This describes most of CA...not just the desert-y spots. I am in a rural-ish area and we still don't have a lot of turnout. Not because there isn't land, but rather because land is so darn expensive. Most boarding barns with any type of facilities usually don't have a lot of places for turnout. All their land is being used for the facilities. IME, most horses get used to it. We try to get them out as much as we are able and then make sure they have a regular program of work and they seem to do just fine. FWIW: two of my best friends used to live in Everett (well, one in Everett, one in Lake Stevens) and I LOVED it there. It's too rainy for me to want to live there, but it is beautiful and had a lovely feel to it. |
