Indy-that's very interesting that they went back to their regular lives. And I agree that it probably means they were planning more, and possibly bigger things. Because the younger brother was naturalized (ironically enough on September 11, 2012) he can have his citizenship revoked as soon as he's convicted of a felony. Then he can be deported, or sent to Gitmo. I think they should deport him to Russia-I'm sure Vladimir Putin would love to take him in, and treat him appropriately.
I think most Americans would not want him deported, so that we can assign an appropriate punishment and not leave it up to politics and chance.

But that aside, if he was deported, would it even be possible for Russia's government to charge him for a crime committed in another country? E.g. if an American citizen committed a crime in Russia, would it be possible under our legal system to charge him with a crime?

Just an odd, curious question. I have never thought about it...

So glad my fellow Bostonians are all safe.

Crazy when they caught him lastnight. I was out to dinner with my sister and the entire restaurant stood up and cheered, people were crying, etc. Obviously a lot of questions need answering and I'm interested to see how this all pans out but I am just so, so glad we can breathe a little sigh of relief. Who knows what will happen to him, but I'm glad he was alive. Can't imagine being the doctors and nurses that have to treat him. What must that be like?

The details emerging about their lives here over the past 10 years are so eerie. So strange to think they've been living amongst us, normal as can be for so long.

Can you imagine being the owner of the house & boat? Peeking into your boat and seeing him? Holy :censored: . I don't know WHAT I'd do!

Bravo to the amazing 9000+ members of law enforcement who worked so tirelessly to bring justice to this city! Seeing SWAT, military, bomb dogs, staties, locals, detectives, etc. all on ONE STREET is pretty insane. I don't know how these men and women do what they do.

For those of you who said you've never been to Boston, come see us! We're wicked awesome. :woot:

Trial-any government can charge you with anything. I was hinting that the Russians would execute him right on the spot. I'm sure Vladimir Putin would do it himself-hopefully with his shirt on for once. Bomber #2 is a Chechen by birth, and his naturalization can be voided, leaving him eligible for deportation. If he gets off on a technicality, then his life will be worthless anyway. If convicted he will either get Supermax in Florence, CO to await his final dispatch, or directly to Terre Haute where the federal death penalty cases are sent to wait (like Timothy McVeigh). However, if his citizenship is voided, and he is considered a non-US citizen he can be sent to Gitmo, or convicted and jailed. As a terrorist he could be eligible for trial by military tribunal also.

Today's update, in the strange news category. Apparently the older brother was down, being handcuffed, and in the street, when the younger brother drove the carjacked SUV right over him, and dragged him.

And on CNN.com the father claims he's going to come to the U.S., and be with his son. He's not getting a warm welcome from the U.S. embassy staff, and can certainly forget coming here for any reason. He'll be lucky if the Russian government doesn't show their displeasure with him and his relatives also. And apparently the reason the parents went home was something to do with the mother committing a financial crime.

I saw the video of the Boston Red Sox tribute, and it was so touching.

Today's update (4/25)-so daddy wants to come here, and I wonder who is going to finance that? The mother probably can't come here, after her conviction or facing charges from last year's theft from Lord & Taylor. The mother and aunt are getting on my last nerve, and now the dad is claiming that they were framed, photoshopped, and everything is all a plot by the CIA or FBI or martians or something. Denial is one thing, but they are definitely approaching tin foil hat territory. And does anyone believe the younger brother who claims the brothers were going to New York City to party? What a stupid idea, and I think everyone can guess what was going to happen. And the older brother is a suspect in the death of a friend of his, and two other people-I wonder what else will come out about both brothers.

Wounded Warriors have been visiting the wounded, and telling them what life is like after suffering similar injuries.

Sorry I kind of dropped off here. I sat down a couple times to post on Friday and my brain was such a buzz I couldn't write anything down. JF-I'm sorry your time here was such a bummer.

Here's an account of Thur night on for me and my DH. We were supposed to leave first thing Friday morning for a wedding in NJ. We were out and about in Cambridge Thursday night running errands and going for a walk. We got home and were packing when I decided to check something on the internet "quickly". When I did I saw social media going crazy. It started with one friend who works at MIT assuring everyone she was ok, which i knew couldn't be good. We then found out about the carjacking, the murder of the MIT officer, the robbery of the 7-11, and a car chase from Cambridge to Watertown that included explosives being thrown at the police. We didn't know if these things were connected to the bombings or each other. DH and I were :o

We turned on the TV and watched the craziness unfold in Watertown. I finally nodded off around 2:30 or 3 but DH stayed up even longer. In the meantime friends of ours who live in Watertown were posting the most incredible photos including ones that showed explosions you could see out of their windows, police, FBI, SWAT etc in the streets, etc etc. When we finally went to bed we knew the older brother had been killed and I suspected the younger brother would be caught shortly. I woke up early the next morning and turned on the radio to find out that the major metropolitan area was on lock down and that they advised to not open your door to anyone but a uniformed policeman. In Watertown there was no driving or leaving the house allowed. Within a couple hours they were reporting that they were looking for the suspects on Norfolk Street in Cambridge. For reference, Norfolk street is about a ten minute walk from my house. I also lived on Norfolk St. years ago. It's a connecter from my neighborhood into Central Square. Throughout the day they reported that Norfolk Street and Inman Square (right down the street from me) were locked down, that there might be explosives on Norfolk Street, and that there would be a controlled explosion there (which never did happen). Eventually it came out that the bombers had lived on Norfolk Street.

As I'm sure most know they lifted the lockdown a little before 7pm. We loaded the car and left, by the time we got to our friends house in Central Square a mile away there were reports of shots fired. As we headed towards Boston to pick up another friend (and passed the gas station where the carjacking victim escaped) we saw tactical units flying past us on a major road. We heard the capture on the radio as we drove down to NJ. We got there at 2 am and attended a beautiful waterfront wedding the next day. Sunday we drove home, I crashed on the couch at 8 pm and went to work Monday. Of course our internet died at home and just came back up, which is a big part of why I've been MIA here. Also my feelings about everything that happened are still indescribable. I think it will take some time before I can describe what this experience has been like, maybe it will never happen. The fact that I've been living in the same neighborhood as terrorists for five years, that the younger one was a product of my community.... these things continue to leave me reeling.

Some photos:

Inman Square/Norfolk St. - the whole block where they lived was evacuated, which is why there are people outside of their homes

Sigh. And now they've moved the surviving suspect to a Federal medical infirmary/prison 5 minutes from my house.

I'm okay with that though - knowing he was being treated in the same hospital as some of the victims had to have been an incredible irritant to the families and staff.
