I eat Paleo too! US Wellness Meats is a great source for Grass-fed Beef and Bison, and pastured chickens and happy pigs ![]() I started Round 2, of The Whole 30 yesterday aka Paleo to the extreme. Another great book is "It Starts with Food" which explains the whole 30. I just started ordering my meals from ModPaleo, it's a local Charlotte based company that prepares prepacked Paleo meals every week. They are amazing and I'm loving the fact I don't have to cook as often! Here is my blog, where I post pictures of my food http://bacoogle.tumblr.com/ but I haven't updated it in awhile. |

Thanks Lives, Do you know if those books are on Kindle? Also is that a national company? Do you have it shipped? The food is great isn't it. Those dishes look delish. I> love mashed Cauliflower. Just like taters! I do not even miss potatoes. or Pasta.

I have It's starts with Food on my IPad. So there is an E-book version. Not sure about the Kindle. ModPaleo is not a national company. It's based in Charlotte NC and they deliver to the local CrossFit boxes once a week. I thought I was an awesome Paleo chef until I found this company! Do you have a spiral veggie slicer? I make zoodles (zucchini noodles). http://www.amazon.com/World-Cuisine-A4982799-Tri-Blade-Vegetable/dp/B0007Y9WHQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365867903&sr=8-1&keywords=spiral+veggie+slicer Have you looked at PaleOMG.com and http://civilizedcavemancooking.com/ ? Those are 2 of my favorite websites for recipes. As far as salads dressings go, Whole Foods carries http://www.tessemaes.com/ which are all Paleo friendly. If I think of anything else that I use, I will post it! |

I had the same problem for years! I have found that eating (or drinking, in the form of Citrucel) soluble fiber before any salad or raw veggies helps a LOT. This is a common strategy for those who have been diagnosed with IBS. Besides Citrucel, there are soluble fiber supplements in pill form, such as Apple or Grapefruit Pectin. Additionally, I have discovered a wonderful, natural anti-gas pill that blows the chemical (simethicone) drugs out of the water; Gaia Herbs Gas & Bloating. http://www.gaiaherbs.com/products/detail/28/Gas-Bloating |

We gave up wheat about 2 years ago along with rice and potatos. I think going without bread and pasta for me was the hardest but once I got used to it I don't miss them at all. Mr JM lost about 20 lbs right away. He still has a sandwich at lunch but that's his thing. I was never a big processed food person and I'm convinced it was the way I was brought up. My mother made everything from scratch and we didn't have a lot of snacks in the house and we didn't drink soda. Mom did all her own canning and freezing. She even made her own friut roll ups! My grandfather had a dairy farm and we got our milk, eggs, and pork from the farm. I don't have the time that my mother had but I subscribe to "if it has more than four ingredients in it and/or I can't pronounce what's in it I don't buy it." I only buy pasture raised organic eggs and chicken. (cage free doesn't mean they get to be outside nor does free range) I'm also very lucky that my father and my uncle raise grassfed organic beef on my grandfather's farm and that's where I get all my beef. I love to cook so that helps. I also travel for my job, a lot. It's not hard find good quality restaurants that offer lots of choices for people who are concerned with eating well once I get to a city, it's the airports that can be difficult. I've noticed a big change though in the last three years or so where airports have some healthier options. The Virgin America terminal at SFO has the best food options ever. Starbucks also always has fruit and nuts so I can always find something there. editing to add: Agave Nectar is a good option as a sweetener. I buy the organic at Whole Foods. In season or not? My mom was just complaining about the price of asparagus, and she was surprised when I told her it was pretty inexpensive right now because she didn't think about how it was grown (I paid $1.39 a bunch yesterday at a regular grocery store). But...it is in season right now. In November....where the heck does asparagus even come from - Australia? No wonder it's expensive! One of my issues is trying to eat seasonally and locally....often wind up with no food in my cart. I haven't really figured out how to manage it. Eating fresh fruits and veggies in the winter is awesome but it makes my head hurt thinking about where they were grown and how much fuel it took to get them to my plate...

Just adding my two cents about some of this (please dont flame me). The reason why you cant really buy raw milk is because of the risks associated with it. Listeria, salamenella, E.coli etc. Raw milk is not meant to be stored like pastuerized milk and I think (my own opinion) the lack of availability is to protect dairy farmers from people who do dumb things like give raw milk to children or pregnant woman. There are risks assocatied with it and I honestly think most farmers do not want that burden. Now someone said that lactose intolerance comes from consuming pasteurized milk-not true. Just a few other comments about production/marketing. "Free range" does not mean a) happy or b) health animals. There is a lot of work on free range poultry systems down in AUS where they have shown that free range birds are actually less healthy and when given the choice birds will not go outside. In that country, free-range layers are housed in cages until 23wks (broilers are housed inside until 21d) and are still considered free range. Im not 100% sure of the US. "Cage-free" chicken meat-broilers arent raised in cages ever. "Hormone-free" poultry-poultry producers do not give hormones. I twitch when i hear poultry marketed as hormone free. "Organic" or "free-range" does not mean humane. There are organic factory farms and free-range systems that are not humane. That being said, I am 100% against the use of antibiotics for anything other than treating illnesses. Use of them as a growth promotant in poultry is something I am strongly against, especially since there are other natural products out there that achieve the same growth promoting results. The reason why grass fed dairy isnt as readily available is because cows simply cant produce that much milk on forage alone. Milk production tapers off pretty quickly (and they lose a lot of weight when they are producing a lot during early/peak lactation). Similar concept with grass fed beef-time to market increases substainally so the cost to the producer is higher. At the rate that we consume these products, its just not sustainable. Just wanted to note a few food for tought comments. I think the biggest thing is know where your food comes from. At the end of the day, thats the most important thing. I get my eggs from our poultry farm and they taste 110% better than that from the grocery. Are they cage free? No. Organic? No. But I know how those layers are raised (humanely) and I know what they eat. I think if more people took the time buy locally and understand where their food comes from, we'd be better off. Unfortunately, most people are not as educated as those of you on this thread

Excellent post, JF. I think there is a lot of "feel good" status with the things you mentioned that don't always equate to happier or healthier animals. Prop 2 in CA comes to mind. |

I am half way through the whole 30 book! WOW awesome, and I am going to commit to it All the way. The science is there. it all makes so much sense. Have nothing to lose except my coffee and cream. I you going whole hog? exactly the program? cause they sure say do it all or nothing. its only 30 days. I will be really interesting if all they say will happen does. I cannot imagine anyone who has any of those illnesses or symptoms not want to try it to see if they can heal themselves. I may have to use you as a sounding board cause you are the only person I know who is doing it. Thanks for the book! I will keep all posted!

I hate cooking and I have a very small food budget. Is paleo or even lower gluten or gluten free an option? I really would like to eat better, I just am not sure it's possible. I know more people who have gone gluten free than paleo, but they all have felt better. It definitely intrigues me. |

I am doing the Whole 30, Round 2. I did it 100% in January as well, and survived lol. The first week is the hardest. The only non-whole 30 compliant thing I am not doing, is giving up protein shakes. I am trying to hit a goal weight for a weightlifting competition next month though and I'm doing some experimenting. I used to think there was NO way in the world that I would drink black coffee, now I LOVE it. I'm happy to answer any questions

That is great. You do weight lifting? I do weights but never would be good enough for competition, too old! LOL I think I am going to end up giving up the coffee, it does not sit well with me on occasion makes my heart do fluttery things. And decaf is seriously vile. The alcohol is not prob because I do not drink. Wheat I am over. I am not going to do it until I can commit to it. I am still eating pretty much straight paleo other the the occasional baby peas, and the coffee cream |

Don't forget Iron. Anemia can do this to you. I used to have fluttery heart things and attributed it to my health history. I figured I was lucky to be alive anyway, so.... turns out it was serious anemia. Now that I take an iron supplement, no more flutters. |
