I live in a very hippie area and there's sort of an underground raw milk group of people who either exchange food from their garden for milk or buy into a cow "co-op" so they really aren't buying milk as a product, they are just taking from "their" cow. Maybe if you put the word out, you could find such an opportunity? I've never tried raw milk so I don't know if I'd like it or not. I did make the switch to almond milk (my friend jokes about almonds being milked from their little almond teats...what? they don't have those??). Since I'm not eating cereal anymore, I don't need cow's milk per se (although I do love it) and with it being so expensive, making the switch was a good way to save a few bucks, since I'd drink a lot of it (and only the organic-in-the-glass-jar milk...mmmmm). I do eat other milk products, though, like cheese and yogurt and butter. Almond milk is good in smoothies and comes in different flavors ("original" and vanilla and chocolate - all either sweetened or unsweetened). Can we talk sweetener? I used to use Splenda but wanted to get away from that so started using stevia or something like that and I HATE it! I do like Sugar in the Raw and of course real sugar, but I have to use more of it. I've not done any research into sweeteners - what of how those affect the diet and the body? |

Almond teats!! Best one yet! LOLI have to go searching more. I live in a rural community and someone somewhere has to have Raw milk. Truth I had it years ago and it was the best darn stuff I ever tasted. Ice cold. The pasturization or how ever you spell it kills off all the good enzymes, one of the reasons people are lactose intollerant, the processed stuff lacks the enzymes and the stomach rebels. Sweetner, Since I read so many reports years ago about its effect on the body, if it is not Honey or plain sugar, even refined, I do not touch it. Years ago I had a friend whos dad was an MD. When they came out with aspartame he said no one in my family will ever eat that stuff, It is pure chemical poison. This was early 80s and the chemical contents were already being analized and Many doctors would not touch it. HAve you tried Truvia? it is from the south african Stevia bush. It is safe not processed, not as wicked sweet as the artificial stuff. Give it a try. Fishy, heres some reading for you on Aspartame, There are literally hundreds of reports. http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/healthy-eating/top-number-most-dangerous-artificial-sweeteners.html#b Edited by Sannois, Apr 12 2013, 08:24 AM.

So right about the awful chemistry of Aspartame...terrible stuff. And, yes, Stevia products are excellent...I think even can be used by diabetics safely? As to coffee and chocolate...I've recently read several articles that state both are actually rather helpful and a little of each every day can go a LONG way to offering health benefits. If you drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day it can be a boost to your health. It's best if you drink your coffee black (but you can put the Stevia in it for sweetening and even a little milk...or soy milk or almond milk or whatever you can tolerate...again, it's about balance and not overdoing one thing) and eat two little Dover Dark chocolates (not made with preservatives or chemicals and has the natural chocolate alkalais), that can have good effects...on the brain, for immune system support and as an antioxidant. No one thing works for all...as an example, I cannot have almond milk as I am deathly allergic to all real nuts (note: peanuts are not nuts, but a type of vegetable, it is a legume). I don't really drink cow's milk, but I do some cheeses, and I also eat yogurt (helps with the Celiac issues and also I like it for all the probiotic support). But, again, not everyone likes or tolerates yogurt. I think if one can eat as much "real" food as possible and also can assure that they are drinking clean water and NOT sipping sodas all day (plus proper exercise), that it goes a long way to health improvement and weight control. If Paleo works for you, great, if being a Vegetarian works for you, great, if just eating the proper balance of protein/carbohydrates/proper starches works for you, great...if you feel better having some dairy in your diet, great. I cannot see how just one kind of dietary plan works for every person, we are all different. The human being...actually all living things...survive BECAUSE of the variety of their biological processes within a species. |

Ah, my current chocolate of choice. I might eat more than 2 a day, though. I agree that it's about trying to make as healthy choices as possible within real world constraints, which includes avoiding feelings of deprivation. I don't like the idea of a lot of the fad diets out there that are very restrictive. The Paleo diet sounds a bit extreme to me and like the current fad....and does the Wheat Belly book. I haven't read it, but I imagine it's a lot like a Michael Moore documentary. Truth, but told in a way as to convince people it is the only TRUTH with a capital T. I prefer to go the "little bit of everything, nothing in extreme" route when thinking about food. This could be because I have struggled with food my entire life and found the exclusion tends to lead to going overboard. (I've never been a binger...I just eat too much throughout the day and my portions are too large in general). While it is better to eat real versions of foods, if you don't have the self control regarding portions, I can see how easy it is to get into the "fat free" etc versions. I do find the more natural I eat, the easier it is to maintain a decent weight. I think people who really struggle with weight are dealing with things that have nothing to do with food, to be honest. For example: My mom wants to do lap band surgery. She has lost weight before, but has always gained it back. Her set-point is not a good one and she struggles to keep her weight down. She literally told me that if she does the lap band, she could have a free-for-all month before hand. That is SOOOO not the right mindset to have when considering weight in general and just a drastic option in specific. But she just does not have the self control to do what needs to be done (eat better and exercise more). She is trying, but it's pissign in the wind. She hates to cook and HATES vegetables and has decided that the way she is going to get more vegetables without having to cook is by eating the toddler food versions. She can tolerate those and they are easy to prepare. Well, it's a better mindset...not great...but better. |

Fishy, I hear ya! I have always loved dark chocolate and in college began to drink coffee (one or two cups/day, black), so always have done so in moderation and when the studies began coming in to support moderate use of each I sure was happy to hear it! At least for me, it works. Here are a few links of interest: https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-chocolate/AN02060 http://www.nbcnews.com/id/40220089/ns/health-heart_health/t/why-dark-chocolate-boosts-heart-health/#.UWg_RsoplV8 Actually, I was aware of the positive healthy cardiovascular results of some chocolate in the diet and why. I worked at the Arizona Heart Institute for several years doing medical writing and was on the Transplant Research Team, and waaaayyyy back then the scientists who worked there knew of the benefits. OF course, you have to read the labels!! Many chocolate products DO have wheat and other kinds of fillers (as well as chemical preservatives) in them...so, buyer beware. But, if you get a good quality chocolate product, it really can be a positive in your diet plan. And, coffee (again, in moderation!) can be positive, too: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/coffee-drinkers-lower-risk-death-heart-disease-stroke/story?id=16359526 http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/coffee-new-health-food Naturally, there are folks who hate the taste (or effects) of coffee or are allergic to chocolate, etc. But, for those of us who like both, if we're careful and imbibe in moderation, we actually can do so without guilt. OF course, good fresh vegetables (lots of them!) are really important, too. So many great vitamins and minerals come from well grown vegs. And, yep, if you want to eat meats or fish or eggs, the best kind is the hormone free type...and, personally, I focus totally on range free. I sure applaud the efforts to get raw milk, but it should be pursued carefully and only buy from a VERIFIED raw milk dealer (at least in my state we have them). Typhoid and other nasty things can lurk in raw milk. And, btw, there are "home pasteurization" techniques you can do to help with possible "nasties" in raw milk (cow or goat). Question: does anyone here have their own "truck garden" and raise their own vegetables/fruits? Does anyone have their own flock of chickens? Do you have goats for milk? Do you have any bees for your own honey? Also, do you guys know of a great magazine called "Grit"? REALLY great resource for those "growing their own"...my favorite magazine! http://www.grit.com/ Lots of cool and very well done articles...good support for the Paleo diet and/or what I call the "Old School EAT SENSIBLY Diet"! I am trying to give up diet soda. I have not drank regular soda for 20+ years (maybe one a year, by accident), but recently started reading about artificial sweetners and decided to give it up. I do not drink coffee. I can't stand it. I feel like I need the boost in the morning and I will try tea sweetened with a bit of sugar. Slowly, I am hoping to drink unsweet tea though I find it bitter. I don't do bitter. Then, I want to increase my water intake. In the summer, I drink a lot of water. Not so in the winter. Has anyone seen an improvement in joint pain because they upped their water intake? I would love to see a difference there... |

I saw an article recently about diet soda. A woman was sick and unable to walk. The docs told her she had MS! Turns out the aspartame was to blame. She gave up diet soda and got better. Amazing! |

No question! Scary crap! Barb, I wish I had my own bees and chickens, buy I am lucky enough to have neighbors who do. My honey is raw and pure from the local bee lady, and My eggs are from a couple down the road. Sometimes I can even go grab right off the nest! LOL Yeah, the only way I would do raw is if it was a true Raw mild dealer. Could be icky otherwise! |

For me eating mostly Paleo (although I guess I do my own version as I do eat cheese and do eat a dessert once or twice a week) doesn't feel like a diet at all. But maybe that is b/c I did not make the change because I needed to lose weight, I did not need to lose weight, but because I wanted to be healthier. I am a firm believer in you are what you eat. For me it is not a diet to lose weight but a lifestyle change. I have to say eating "whole" foods really does make a difference in how you feel. It was very hard at first to change certain habits and to give up the convenience of just running into a gas station to grab a snack. I do wish that I did not have such a love affair with sugar, but at least now I feel like I can go several days without having any and not be going nuts from craving it. |

I am also in the camp of trying to generally eat healthier, whole foods, in moderation, instead of being on a strict diet of "eat this, don't eat that." I am far from perfect, as is my family, but slowly trying to switch over to things like healthier meat sources (which also taste better), good farm eggs (which also taste better), more veggies, etc. I do notice I feel better when I eat better. Luckily for me I have never really liked soda, diet or otherwise. I prefer water, plain iced tea, hot tea when I'm cold, and coffee (which I do drink with some "real" sugar and real cream). My husband still drinks diet soda, I wish I could convince him otherwise, but I can't. He hates coffee and almost anything else with caffeine, so that's how he gets his fix. And I hate the taste of anything with artificial sweetener, so that helps. I figure if I'm going to eat something sweet, I'll at least eat "real" sugar. Preferably something I made myself so I know what's in it. Love how healthy I'm getting drinking coffee and eating some dark chocolate.
