Just wanted to share this in case it helps anyone else out.

We have a 10 year old golden in our family and tried out Adequan to see if it helped his hips/energy level any. Oh my god. Night and day difference. He's like a puppy again - bounding up and down the hall after his toys. Jumping in and out of the pool. He is just so much more comfortable - you can really see such a dramatic change in him. I tried it on a whim thinking - well, everyone raves about it for horses, let me ask the small animal vet about using it in dogs. I couldn't be happier with the results!

Lion that's good to know! Is it given as an injectable?

Oh yes, it's awesome that your pup is feeling so good

It is. And they taught me how to inject so we didn't have to bring him to the vet for each injection, which would have been a pain. I love my vet beyond reason as they are 40 minutes away and yet I haven't switched! ;)

Monkey Mother Muckers is getting a little stiff in his back and hips so it might be a good option for him. He is also ten turning eleven later this year.

I will ask my vet about it!! We used Rimadyl on one of my greyhounds years ago, and the side effects outweighed its benefits.

That's great! I recently put our 5 year old dobe on chrondroitin/glucosamine pills as he would be stiff and have a slight limp sometimes when he got up from napping. It's made a huge difference, well worth the $20 or so a month. Like you, I figured if I did it for the horse, why not the dog? I guess next I'll be sharing my old horse's Previcoxx with the dog, lol.

I had Duffy on Dasuquin (which is Cosequin for dogs) for a while and definitely noticed a difference. He doesn't have arthritis per se, but it was helping him get over a sprained hip. Our vet said she has seen it do a great job for dogs with arthritis.

My little mutt Beethoven, (a DalUahPeekPoo), was paralyzed a few years ago, vet said get her a wheelchair or euthanize. I could not do either one, so I crate rested her, started Deramaxx (now on Rimadyl) and Adequan. She now goes jogging every day with me and is like a new dog. I've slowly cut back on the daily Rimadyl since the Adequan works so well!! She is around 20 pounds and gets .42cc. Of note, for those looking to start it, you have to load it every week and then cut down from there. Wonderful stuff!

I love it. I steal a vial out of the horses' box for the old corgi. Leo got it for a few years too. I had him up to 1cc a week before he died. Brie has been on a half a cc every other week for a while too. I recently added Metacam for her too since she has been having increasing issues. She is like a new dog. I tried to take her off the Adequan since she is on the Metacam but they seem to work together well for her.

Great timing on this thread. Obie, the corgi rescue I got from these boards (thank you incentive :cloud9: ) came to me at age 8 with terrible hip dysplasia. Periodically, he has needed Rimadyl for it, but recently it has become much worse (he's 10.5 now) and his vet and I discussed starting Adequan injections. He is also on Cosequin DS.

I am fervently hoping that the Adequan will help him out. We are so in love with the little man (and his criminal antics) and seeing him in pain absolutely kills me. It should arrive tomorrow and Starlight said she would help us with the first injection...so we shall see. Fingers crossed :luck: :luck: :luck:

Since I switched my horses over to Pentosan I had quite a bit of Adequan left over.

Archie Moore the Boxer has a bum elbow. Diagnostics with a specialist revealed no real cause for his intermittent lameness. :sigh:

He suggested Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. I told him I had the Adequan and he said that it would be great for him. He told me for dogs to use a 2x week loading dose for four weeks and then once every 3-4 weeks.

Since the stupid lameness is so off and on I'm not sure if it's helping or not, but I have it so he's getting it!

As an aside, both the specialist and our regular dog vet don't really suggest Adequan because most of their clients don't/won't/can't give an IM injection.

Once the Adequan is used up I may try the Pentosan on him.

You can give Adequan subq to a dog or cat. That's a little easier at home. The usual dose is 5mg/kg.

I think they sell Adequan labeled for dogs (Canine) and in the dog dosage, if anyone is worried about dosing out. I have never researched it but I assume there's literature out there on the dog version. I had heard of it years ago but hadn't thought of it much until recently. It's been used for years, vets should be familiar with it.
