| So C is likely autistic; and I'm not handling it all that gracefully. | |

TBF, you are so right. I honestly think kids (especially under the age of 5) are just little animals in a lot of ways... they operate on instinct. Just like, when he was drinking obsessively, it was because he was chronically dehydrated. He *needed* the fluid! His body knew it, even if he couldn't vocalize it. The previous formula was a hypo-allergenic product. HOWEVER, it still had whey protein in it. It was hydrolyzed, so that his body could absorb it without an allergic reaction. The new formula is solely a soy-based product. He did well on formula #1, but he has done fabulous on formula #2. He is even eating better. I can't help but wonder if the whey protein in formula #1 was bothering his still stomach and/or his immune system, even though "they" claimed it "shouldn't" be an issue. My personal opinion is that he does fall on the spectrum, but just barely.... much like Mr. FG. However, when he is not feeling well, it is all exacerbated and we see more of the typical ASD type behavioral traits. Ultimately my hope is that the therapy/intervention will help him with the delays, and careful management of his diet will curtail the GI stuff enough that he is feeling well and thus functioning well. I do think there is some GI/immune/medical issue underlying that inhibits his body's ability to process food and nutrients appropriately, and hopefully we will get that figured out enough. But for now, I'm happy the new formula is helping him so much and that we are finally getting the appropriate intervention. I am *much* relieved because I feel like I finally have the right people and support services on my side, and I'm not just dealing with this alone. Thanks to all you guys, for always being so kind and supportive and full of good ideas and insight. Honestly, I've said it before, but I mean it... TOC truly keeps me from going crazy, I appreciate you all so much.

I had a co-worker that had an allergy to a protein produced by cows. Seriously - it was originally thought to be a simple case of lactose intolerance, but she had persistent symptoms even after avoiding all dairy products. Ultimately it was discovered that it was also related to beef, which she didn't eat often (not anywhere as often as she had been consuming dairy, so naturally after avoiding dairy her symptoms decreased dramatically), but she ate enough to keep giving her weird symptoms for years until they figured it out. I think we all probably have weird allergies/intolerances but they are never quite figured out. I can't eat egg whites, but seem to be able to tolerate the yolks. Except in baked goods I am ok. But not powdered eggs. And I don't have a typical "egg allergy" (aka anaphylactic reaction) but instead get an upset stomach. No idea why....i just avoid eggs now, but it took about 35 years to figure out the cause/effect of the eggs in my diet. So glad Colt is doing so well on the new formula!! Keep at it - don't let anyone talk you out of "your gut feeling" and stick with what works.

Watch out for other products that have some type of milk / lactose product added, and some don't tell. I understand the filler in many vitamins is a milk sugar type products. I think you're on the right track about the problem that an allergy or sensitivity can cause, because how can your body absorb nutrition when it goes through too fast, from a type of mal absorption? |

So glad to hear Colt is doing so well on this new formula! I am no expert, but it seems to make sense that his ASD symptoms and his nutritition issues earlier in life could go hand in hand and interact with each other. All of us act differently when we feel better vs. when we feel crappy! I also wouldn't doubt that there is something else medically going on, but for now, you are right, get him on the right track with this formula, keep him feeling good, he is getting the help ne needs developmentally, and sort the rest out as you go along. In fact, I just was talking about this to my mom this weekend. She has been having vague symptoms for years, but now worse, and finally figured out they are probably related to an allergic reaction to the screws in her jaw from a previous surgery. We both said - fix the main problem now (remove the screws) and figure the rest out later once the main thing gets better. You are an amazing mom, and you have two great kids. I know it must be a struggle, but your fighting for Colt is paying off.
