I think it is a great idea to consolidate - I'd say no more than 5 categories and see where it takes us. Great idea, Indy! :cheer:

I would like to ask you consider another change. Close the thread called
"Humor Me" and ask that those who have news actually put a header on
their posts. I choose which threads to read based on the heading and I
rarely read that thread since there is no idea what the newest contribution
is about.

Robin - I think that could be a good idea. IMO that thread tends to be hard to respond to even when you might have a good idea to help someone in a situation because suddenly that particular post is five pages back and it can be hard to bring up "old" posts even when it's only really a day or so old. We might get more discussions if we started fresh with new threads & specific subject titles.

Agreed robin and indy... I hardly ever try to follow it because since I sometimes don't get on for a couple weeks at a time I just am lost! I mean, FG is no longer on bedrest and Colt is about to graduate high school it seems :-P

As you guys can probably tell, I went ahead with the forum combinations. Hopefully this will help with discussions.

All the old threads still exist, they are just in new homes. If you can't find something in particular, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

And of course, if we find that a particular topic really does need its own forum again, that can happen. But for now let's try things with three main forums and see how it goes.

Also -- at the end of the week, I am going to close the "Humor Me" thread in The Barn Aisle unless anyone has strong objections. It is three years old and over 6,300 posts long so it might be time to start fresh.

I like having the humor me thread for small updates, but I agree it would be nice to start fresh with a new updates thread

I like it, but I have to say I will miss the "humor me" thread and doubt that I will post as much without it. Which may or may not be a good thing. ;) I liked being able to jump in here and there and often don't feel like I have enough subject matter to warrant it's own thread. And I liked being able to go to one place and see everyone's day-to-day stuff with their horses.

I think we can do periodic "update" threads where people can just give a quick update without starting a new thread. It's just that the old one was so big that it was hard to know where to start reading!

Things like "Spring Check-In/Updates" or something; then when it's mid-June or so maybe start a "Summer Updates: What are you working on?" type of ideas...

I hope so, TBF... I have no problem with starting a new update thread periodically but would miss it if it went away entirely.

What about if we start a new "Quick updates" thread, for the day-to-day updates? That way there's a place to post excitement over a kick-ass lesson, rant about another lame day, or put a cute pic of your horse? Close "Humor Me" and start fresh with a thread dedicated specifically to short updates.

Then for events that need more elaborate updates (new horses, training hints, tons of pictures, etc), we encourage people to start new, separate threads?

TBF - I love the "Spring updates" idea for threads too. Something like that might be good to start periodically to encourage quieter posters to give updates.

I'm also thinking of starting a new "Introduce Yourselves" sticky at the top of one of the forums. I feel like us regulars know eachother and our horses/dogs/cats/etc but there are some newer folks that may not and it also might be a good way to get some lurkers out of the shadows.

I feel the same way. I like having all the updates in one place. It can get overwhelming if you haven't read it a while, but I just go to the end if that's the case. Actually...who am I kidding, I read every post on that thread. :innocent:

I also wouldn't update as much without that thread. I don't have much reason to start a separate thread of my own that's going to get a handful of posts and then die. In Humor Me, I can post my things and they either generate a few comments, or don't.

When I click on a thread it automatically takes me to the first unread post. Does it not do that for everyone?
