I read mostly classics, love Willa Cather, Henry James, Pearl Buck. I recommend anything by them. A more recent read, that I loved and would recommend to anyone, is "Crossing to Safety" by Wallace Stenger. It is the most beautifully written book. I kept stopping to re-read passages because they were so fabulous.

Witchy, it would take me forever to get thru Stegner's books for that very same reason! Beautiful writing.

I've read no Stegner. There must be something wrong with me. I'm going to have to start a "read in" and get through all these books!

I'd never read anything by Stegner before and I'm a serious reader. I got a huge pile of books at a library sale and it was one of the ones I bought. Now I'll have to read more of his writing. I love library sales, $1.00 a bag for books...who can beat that?

I love the library sales, but you have to have patience. It's like the Ross/Marshall's of book buying...and I HATE Ross and Marshall's. I don't "browse" shop very well. I'm a "see what I like from across the room" or "shop for that one thing I know I want" type. Library sales are hard on me. :)

I read Big Rock Candy Mountain many years ago, and followed it with Angle of Repose. BRCM was written as a younger man, and many feel that AOR was from the prospective of an older, wiser Stegner.

You'll love it.
Ok so I'm almost done with it and I seriously almost put off riding today to finish it. I'm enjoying it that much. When I got to the barn, I handed to my mother and told her she might want to peak at it while I was riding-that she could have it next. I came back in from riding; she was 70 pages into and refused to unhand it and I had to wiggle it out of her clenched paws with a promise to return it to her tomorrow. It's an absolutely darling book. Thank you for introducing me to it.

It is quite a good read - and it's wonderful on CD read to you too!! I never would have 'read' it if I had not randomly picked out the CD.

Try "On Chesil Beach" - very well written, quick little read that will stick in your head for a long time.

I'm listening to "The Invention of Everything Else" - not bad.

I have JK Rowlings "Casual Vacacy" up next.

Let me know how you like Casual Vacancy. I started it, put it down in favor of something else and have yet to pick it up again.

So far (40 pages in) I'm mostly disappointed.

I have to also suggest "This Side of Brightness", by Colum McCann. It's wonderful. A bit dark, but really well written and poignant.

Ok, so I went to my first meeting of the "Mothers of North Arlington" Book Club. I have to pick a book for August. Needs to be under 400 pages. Any suggestions? This month we read the History of Love. I read the two previous books they selected but couldn't make it to the meetings. They were "the Twentieth Wife" and "Night Circus".

Would "This Side of Brightness be a good book club read?

There would DEFINITELY be lots to talk about! I wrote a paper on it in my grad-level Irish Lit class.

It's fiction, 289 pages, about the "sandhogs" at the turn of the 20th century who dug the tunnels under the East River for the subway. "Spanning seventy years, Colum McCann's acclaimed novel tells the story of two families bound to the tunnels by ill-fated loves, unintended crimes, and social taboos. Haunting and lyrical, This Side of Brightness delivers a tale as bold and fabulous as New York City itself."

It's really one of my favorite books ever. I haven't read the three you referenced, but I would recommend you read the first couple of chapters of TSoB and decide whether to share it with your club. I know you will enjoy it even if you decide it's not a good read for them.

I am currently reading another series by Charlaine Harris(Southern Vampire series fame) Totally different. Mystery, The Harper Connely series.
I also read both of her other series as well, Really great characters and easy style with a nice mystery that keeps you reading.
