The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

You'll love it.
I just ordered this based purely off the title. You're in big trouble if it doesn't live up to its name :teehee:

Barbara Kingsolver recommendation---I read all of her stuff many years ago--thinking maybe I'll go back and re-read at some point now that I've forgotten so much of what I've read :teehee:

Will research the others suggested and come up with the next read after Ride'em's book.

Finally, a thread on a subject I love!  Just a quick look at my Nook and these are the first few that I would recommend:
Freedom --Jonathan Franzen
Secret History -- Donna Tartt
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close -- Jonathan Safran Foer
Let the Great World Spin -- Colum McCann
This Book Will Save Your Life -- A. M. Homes
The House at Riverton -- Kate Morton

I second The Paris Wife. One of the best books I've read.

I just finished The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult and while I don't normally like her books this one was a great read.

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Loved it!

Salt by Mark Kurlansky you might find interesting

This was a timely thread because I needed a new read as well.

I second "Cutting for Stone" - engrossing! I currently have "Between Love and Honor" by Alexandria Lapierre on my various Kindle-enabled devices and so far it's quite intriguing. Thanks for all of the great suggestions, everyone!

Can anyone recommend libraries that lend electronically? I think RR has used those a lot. I love to read, but hate spending money on books...and actually going to the library just won't happen. :)

 Yours?

As far as I know, all US public libraries do this now. My limited research would suggest that areas that are more upscale have a larger selection.

Search for your library's web page and check it out. If you have a library card you generally need to provide that bar code number and a PIN (so you might have to go into the local library to set it up), and you're in!

Ebooks, audio books, generally a huge selection of current stuff, if you live in an area that isn't totally economically depressed.

Snacky, your own library should be able to set you up to borrow electronically. For ours, I had to go in and get a pin # to use with my kindle and M's nook. Also, you can search for free books on your kindle/nook, and Barnes & Noble has a "Free Friday" where you can download a book of their choosing for free.

I loved Freedom, one of my favorite books. I like memoirs, I loved The End of Normal and What Remains. Right now I'm reading Middlesex and liking it. I can't get to my Nook right now because idgie is sleeping with her head in my lap. I'll look at it later and post again. My favorite book last year was called This Life is in Your Hands. <3

Um, why the heck did I not think of this? We belong to the library for the kids and I read A LOT. Like ignore my husband's existence when a book gets good. And I like YA dystopia fiction so they tend to be series and that gets expensive! Thansk for the tip!

Libraries are great for e-books, though I feel like mine has a somewhat crappy selection if you don't want to wait a month for a book to be available. I've gotten a lot of junk from the library - but it's free junk so if I don't like a book I don't feel bad about not finishing it.

Sign up for the free kindle book groups on fb, too... I get a bunch from those. Sometimes they're crap and I just delete them, but often they're good. I also get e-books from the county library-- they don't have the best selection and sometimes you have to get on a wait list, but the wait usually goes quickly.

I have "Cutting for Stone" and "The Book Thief" in my pile of books to read. Loved "The Art of Racing in the Rain." I just finished a Jane Green book that was really good, I like her for light, chick lit stuff. Oh, and Sophie Kinsella. ;) I read all kinds of stuff but often I just want something light to read because my brain cells are already fried. :)

I just finished "The Girl Who Chased the Moon" by Sarah Addison Allen. It was good. Nothing deep or world changing, but a fun, quick airplane book.

Life of Pi just came in for me at the library but I'm not sure I'm feeling it so far.

Give it a chance. It took me a while to read it...and I honestly think I only kept going because I had borrowed it from a co-worker with whom I had not the easiest relationship...and I ended up enjoying it a lot. A lot of people at my work had read it and it was interesting hearing their take on it. I have yet to see the movie, but I can't imagine it comparing at all to the book.

Well I have a confession to make. As a self proclaimed anti electronics person I have a kindle... :innocent:
And I love it. This winter I amused myself by reading all 19 of Janet Yvonovich's books, And really enjoyed them immensely.
I like fun stuff, Not into too serious reading. But it sure kept me off the internet.
The bad thing about kindles is you just click on the book you want from amazon and it appears like magic.
They you look at your credit card bill at the end of the month. LOL :o
I also read Charlaine harris's other series that were quite good too, mystery.
NExt I am hitting the library, I cannot justify 60 dollar amazon bills, but I did get a lot of reading for the price, never get that if you were buying the actual book. Don't get me wrong, I still adore a real book.
But I was amazed how fast I got used to the kindle. I have never read Agatha Christies books so I am going to do that next! ;)
