I am not even sure how to ask my question since I am so unfamiliar with the terminology.

What I want to know is what is the standard percentage someone charges when they secure a grant. Does that make sense?

I started to respond to this yesterday and never finished. I think it depends on the type and size of the grant. I think some grant writers do charge a "commission" or something that is a percentage of the total - 5% or something... but if the grant is $40,000 v. $350,000 it would probably change the appropriateness of that amount.

I can ask my sister because she has written a lot of grants, although generally she has been an in-house grant writer.

What type of grant are you talking about? Amount?

Generally percentage based agreements for grants are frowned upon by the association of fundraising professionals (http://www.afpnet.org/Ethics/EthicsArticleDetail.cfm?itemnumber=734) and/or illegal....and likely subject to "fundraising consultant" or "fundraising counsel" registration laws in many states, FYI....although many grant riders don't comply with the state laws, they are there.
