Interesting discussion...I, like V, wondered about the coach's motives. I also saw a red flag when there was just one other participant to take the coach up on this offer. What if that person blows a knee on day one? Where does that leave the program?

I don't think putting the horses on hold is a big deal at all. You won't be able to pick up where you left off exactly, but there will always be other horses and other opportunities. The passion won't leave. And if it did, it wouldn't matter to you anymore.

I was offered a chance to play tennis on a high level, but I never had the same passion for tennis that I do for the horses. I think about it sometimes and wonder what if, but no regrets.

It might pan out to be the best thing in the world for you or it might be a learning experience. Either way, it sounds like something you should pursue.

I agree with v. I tend to be very suspicious of people's motives and really, everything comes at a price. While I understand your interest in furthering your triathlon career, I would just advise to proceed with caution. Maybe don't make any horsey decisions just yet and do the tri-training thing for a few months to see how it pans out. If you get a good feeling from it and are making the progress you want to *then* decide what to do about the horsey situation.

Could he be making the moves on you in a sly way?

I like Fish Cheek's "middle ground" suggestion of trying the training for a month or two before making any hard-to-reverse horse moves. That makes sense.

My guess is that the coach may get you hooked and then either ask for money when it turns out training you and the 1 other guy for free isn't so fun OR that he'll always put you 2nd fiddle to the paying customers and you'll get frustrated. I hope I am wrong- but I'm cynical.

Fishy's idea is the best of both worlds!

I've known this guy for a while, it's something he just came up with the idea for and came to me first. It's been two days and there's for sure one other guy and two other maybes. If the "team" doesn't work out he'll still train me in exchange for helping him with putting on his local events, which he hates doing. There's no ironclad commitment from me... I could flake out at any time just like he could. If that happened I would still just keep training on my own (which is what I do now anyway) and since I DO want to have a competitive season next year I would still need to either half lease my horse or just not ride her much.

Certainly not selling the horse or anything, and if I do half-lease her she would have to stay in-barn. Nothing major and certainly nothing irreversable?

Horsey life comes and goes as we grow up! I say go for it! I went without a horse for some 13? Years in my 20s. You are my hero and I cannot wait to cheer for you! A half lease would be grand! Hope you can work that out!

I'm all for exploring life outside of horses. I get where VX and FC are concerned about where this is going (and it's great to get those perspectives - I confess it didn't occur to me to be wondering more about the free training), but I do think that a balanced approach of trying the training, see where it goes and then make some longer term choices about leasing your horse makes sense.

Personally, 'horses' were my all encompassing hobby for my entire grown up life until I turned 40. It wasn't until I stepped away from horses that I discovered that I do have other passions. And things that I just flat out enjoy doing that I never had the time, energy or money for when I was fully committed to horses.

So, explore, check it out, meet new people, and take the paths that look most interesting to you as you go forward. Life isn't linear - it's a vast maze of cool stuff waiting to be checked out. Good luck!
