Have several pairs of sturdy work gloves on hand for cleaning up afterward.

I know most of you in the hurricane zone have already hit the grocery store, but I found this great Mayo Clinic 3-day hurricane meal plan this morning. It includes recipes and shopping lists for 3 days of meals for a family of four experiencing a power outage. There's a grocery list and everything, and the food looks pretty appetizing and nutritious (it was written by dietetics interns, so there ya go.)

My parents have a house on the Jersey Shore. It sounds like they are going to take a direct hit. My dad secured everything and my mom is worried, but like she said there is nothing they can do about it. They are on a plane to HI so they are far away from it.

My brother works in the tunnels in NYC, so the state has shut their job down for 3 days. Unfortunately its unpaid, but he will be safe.

I sent Mr. Indy to Target this morning because we can only find one flashlight. As of 9am, Target was out of flashlights so instead he returned with a half dozen patron saint devotional candles because they were cheap (he also returned with a can of duster and two large bags of Halloween candy so we're all set to get high and then have the munchies too). I'm Jewish, so I'm not up on my devotional candle usage but hopefully one of the ones he got is the Patron Saint of Electricity...

The camping lanterns (battery operated) are probably also sold out too. I have a couple of the old-fashioned lantern types, but they operate off of D cell batteries and are LED so I have one in the garage for the dark trips to the mailbox, starting next Saturday/Sunday with the time change, and for emergencies. I actually bought one for work, because some fool decided that we don't need emergency lights in the bathroom during outages.

I wanted to stab everyone at Wegman's today. MASS HYSTERIA!
BWAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was my experience yesterday. The college kids behind me were making comments about the fact that I was buying perishables like cheese and yogurt. LOL. I dunno, I am used to the media here going NUTS over weather since we get lake effect snow, and it rarely ends up being as bad as they predict. So I guess I am kind of "meh" about this whole thing...

Of course I will have to eat my words if this turns out to be catastrophic here....

I had to go grocery shopping yesterday morning and it was nuts. They were already sold out of water and milk and bread were going fast. I had to go to Southern States and they only had 2 generators left and people were steadily filling their propane tanks.

We have a whole house generator now, thank Tom, so we will have water and power regardless. I'm hoping we're far enough west to miss the worst of it but it looks like we'll still have 30-50 MPH sustained winds and gusts up to 60-70. All the schools around here are already closed tomorrow. I know my boss won't close our office, which sucks, I really don't want to drive in the mess. Also I'm debating whether or not to turn my horses out tomorrow, I can leave them in but then Tues. may be equally as bad, and I don't really want them in for 2 days straight if I can help it. Sigh. Guess I'll decide in the morning whether to throw turnout sheets on and put them out or leave them in. They do have a run in shed but otherwise there is no windbreak here as we're in the middle of a 400 acre field on a hill. At least we don't have to worry about trees for the most part, besides on our road.

Stay safe, everyone, and I hope your power stays on!

I know none of this is a laughing matter, but that truly made me burst out laughing!

Stay safe friends!

It was snowing in Brno (CZ) today and I was all kinds of wanting to whine about SNOW before HALLOWEEN.

But methinks whining on facebook today about the weather would be seen as in poor taste. ;)

Ha ha... RR, here in W. NY snow on Halloween is to be expected!

I can handle snow, I am not sure what to do with this rain/wind/hurricane biznazz.

We are stocked up on all the essentials... I went and refilled pertinent meds... bought a few new movies for the kids... and actually, considered buying a generator. We have a new sump pump, but if the electric goes out, we are SOL. And we just sold the house, and have a nice finished basement, I really don't want any damage down there. Unforunately Lowes and HD are both out of generators.

Still prepping and I am tired. ;) Need to go fill water everywhere and "sandbag" my hay shed with a few old bales of hay so water doesn't get in and underneath my pallets. Otherwise we're pretty set....gutter cleaned out and checked; firewood and kindling for cooking on the woodstove; extra propane for the gas grill...ice made for coolers. Extra wine bought...Time to party! :woot:

We had to go out to a doctor's appointment this morning (they were able to move us to 11 from 1:30 so we could get it in before things got bad) and it was a ghost town on the Beltway. Very creepy.

It's getting windier and windier here north of DC. We're getting the downstairs ready to be our storm bunker (lots of big old trees near our house, so if one falls we want to be lower and by fewer windows. Charging the last entertainment devices and waiting for the monster to show her face. Mr. Indy is excited because he loves storms....fortunately he'll at least listen and stay inside but getting him to stay away from windows is always a chore.
