Be careful everyone! Make plans for power outages!

Anyone directly in the path? I think we will be "safe" here in NY...but lots of flooding and power outages expected. You guys in the NJ/PA/MD area need to be careful!

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Of course the sun is out for the first time in a week....too bad we won't see it again for another week.... :(

I'm pretty sure we're guaranteed a power outage because our freezer is full. Sigh. This always happens. Meats go on sale, I buy them en mass and then power goes out for days.

I hit the grocery yesterday before the masses come to clean it out and got more dog food too so Mr. Indy, Riley, and I can subsist for a while without having to cook or refrigerate anything.

Ugh - I'm supposed to head to the grocery store as part of my regular weekend chores and I'm dreading it. :brickwall: We'll have rain and winds here in MA but we have a long history of losing power for days when we have storms while leaves are still on the trees. Thankfully we're well inland so my preparation other than the grocery store is to secure the grill, bring the garbage cans in, and -- oh yeah run a 5K Sunday.

Hoping the forecast is wrong and nobody will be hard hit! We also expect some hit from the remnants of Sandy here in Southern Ontario... It has been raining steadily since yesterday afternoon and I made it to the barn before it started to put the rain sheet on my girl. She will be okay. I am sure the horses will be out every day, even in the rain (and no shelter in the inside boarded horses fields). If I go mid-afternoon, I bring her in and leave her in.

Why oh why does mother nature do that to us... no rain for weeks/months in the summer, hence less hay --> crazy prices and now... grr..

Take care everyone!

The temp dropped about 30 degrees yesterday in the span of about 5 hours. It was bizarre. Today it is rainy and cold, no wind or anything though. I guess we'll see what happens. I need to grocery shop but not sure what to buy, lol. I don't want to stock up on my usual meats/veg/fruit/etc if we're going to end up without power.....

My dog has just put in a request for water wings and a snorkel. He also questions whether the amount of peanut butter in the pantry is enough to sustain him AND us for a lengthy power outage.

If you are in an area where you might lose water service from electrical failure please fill up some big plastic garbage cans with water in the bathtub near each toilet, and put lots of jugs of water in the kitchen. And don't forget a manual can opener or you'll be hacking all of the cans open. Make sure you have battery operated lanterns, and fresh batteries too. Gas up all vehicles before the lines start, and refill prescriptions if you are anywhere close to needing to-you need at least a week. Charge all cell phones and pagers. Get a battery operated clock too. If you have a landline phone have a regular plug in phone, because during power loss your portable stations don't work, and even during power outages the landline phones work when the cells and others go down.

Have all vital papers, insurance documents, precious objects safely stored in waterproof containers. If you have to evacuate you need at least a week of food for all animals, and everyone in the family needs a central contact number of someone outside the area to coordinate messages.

Home and building owners need hammers, nails, and tarps in case of damage. Lots of duct tape and plastic sheets for window coverage.

Today was farm prep. Stored all the garden decorations, furniture, trash cans, etc. Filled water troughs and a bunch of 10 gallon buckets. Sandbagged around drains to help keep them from getting clogged up with leaves. I think the horses will be fine.

Tomorrow will finish up house prep. Already have plenty of non-perishable food, candles, flashlights. Will fill up the bathtub after we shower tomorrow night. Will fill up every container I can find so we and the dogs have plenty of water. Seth was supposed to fill up the gas tank today - not sure if he did or not, we haven't touched base yet.

Luckily if we lose power, I can hook up to the RV generator for short times, and if it gets really bad, I have friends with a big generator for their house and we can stay with them.

I feel like I should hit the grocery store one more time, but I'm sort of afraid to.

Not looking forward to this at all. Spent part of the day getting everything in the yard put away, tested the generator and plugged in the camper trailer to charge the batteries so we can use that if needed.

At the barn we have already filled up pretty much anything that can hold water since they are on well water there. I am on city water at my house so I can always fill containers with water there and drive it up to the barn. After the 2 storms we had here in CT last year I ordered these just in case http://www.bitofbritain.com/H2Go_Bag_p/3866.htm. Hopefully I won't need them!

The worst of it is that both hubby and I are in the public safety field and will have to work during the storm. He is director of Emergency Management for a local town and I am a 911 dispatcher for another town. Since once we get to work neither of us have any idea when we are going to get home or if we will be able to get home, I get the added bonus of having to bring all 3 of my dogs to work with me. It's a pain but it is nice not having to worry about them. I have a Ford Focus station wagon so I can fold down the back seat and they have plenty of room to move around and sleep. My Lt. lets me park my car inside the sallyport so they are out of the weather and I am able to open the windows of the car for air.

Tomorrow I have to pack up clothes for a couple days for me, and food and water for the dogs and what ever else we may need

One other prep/safety advice is not to cross rivers without checking the flood warnings. After Irene, we lost power for 4 days but the weather was beautiful. A friend had power and invited us there for the day (about an hour away) so off we went, without thinking it was a BAD idea to cross a river to get there....the storm was over, right?

But the flood waters were still rising fast, from all the small streams and other rivers, and ultimately most of the bridges in our area were shut down - well, read about Irene in upstate NY - it was bad. We were very lucky to make it back that day - a barge actually hit the bridge we were going to cross (hit the underside of the driving lanes because the water was so high) so it was shut down for hours to check for damage, but eventually re-opened.

How STUPID we were! It wasn't even for anything important, we were just bored. NEVER again! We are pre-emptively cancelling events (Halloween) that would require us to cross those bridges again. Maybe we will get lucky but better safe than sorry - especially because this storm is not going to blow through in one day and then be 75 and sunny the next!

We have our rain barrels full, so about 150 extra gallons of waters for horses if we lose power. Another 50 gallons stored in the house and we'll draw more in buckets etc. before the storm. Other than that we are good to go. I hope we don't lose power for long, though, as I too have a freezer full of chickens!

Stay safe everyone!

Remember the most important thing about power loss and freezers is to not open the freezer door at all. And put a ziplock bag of ice cubes in the freezer in a cup, on the top of the food so you can see if it melted, so if the power is off long enough to melt the ice you know that you have to toss a lot of stuff.
And don't forget to have a propane or charcoal grill outside so you can cook things like defrosting steak and chicken for a big neighborhood cookout if you have to. And if you're cooking and the power crews come through it's nice to give them some food too. The crews work around the clock until everything is back to normal so they would appreciate the help. ANd you need spare fuel for generators and chain saws if you have those too-stored away from the house.
