I have an ipad that I love. However, I'm not sure I'll ever own an apple computer. I recently bought a new desktop computer (an HP all in one computer) and so far I've been happy with it. If you would have asked me a year ago, since I had so many problems with my PCs, I would have said Mac. However, for what little I do on my computer, I don't need a fancy Mac. In order to get a computer similar to what I have now, I would have had to spend double what I did and I don't think I would have been any happier with it.

Macs have their place and so do PCs. Macs are great for gamers, photographers, videographers and people like that. I don't do any of those things. I do minor photo and video editing and for those my PC works just fine.

I vote that you buy a PC, and that you do it thoughtfully and carefully and not overspend. Truly, the average user who is doing the stuff you describe shouldn't be spending a penny over $500, and most should be spending less than that.

What kinds of machines are these? I had no idea you could get one for under $1k...
You should be able to find a pretty nice PC for around $500. I can't remember all the specs, but my Toshiba Satellite (3 or 4g RAM or ROM or whatever) was only $499 and it came with free MS Office + plus a printer/fax/scanner.

I was toying with the idea of getting another one just for my show manager duties. I don't like having all the show stuff on my PC...and I could easily get something for a few hundred, but haven't done it yet.

Pretty much anywhere. As with any consumer product, the best deals are on the Internet--but even your local stores will have deals for well under $1000. You're in California, right? Here's the deals from your weekly newspaper circular in California for desktops + monitors:

and laptops:

And very seriously, every single computer on those lists would suit your needs. Even the cheapest ones.

Compare this to Macs, where $850 would be an amazing deal on a Mac laptop. I love my Macbook Air, but it wasn't cheap!
