Has anyone here had experience with Dasuquin (sp?) for dogs? I don't have time for too long of a story, but my vet thinks it might be good for Duffy Dog to begin taking it. He is 14 years old, a Schnauzer mix, about 28 lbs. So far he has not shown clear signs of arthritis, though he is mostly deaf and his sight is getting worse. He is slowing down, that's for sure.

In the last month he has hurt himself twice. :mallet: Both times we have no clear idea what happened. He was out in the yard (a normal occurrence) and came in three-legged lame. The first time on a front leg and the last time on a hind leg. Vet thinks both were sprains/strains, but the knee in his back leg feels a tad bit suspicious for a ligament strain also. He is healthy in every other way - heart, lungs, weight, etc.

Both times he was put on "stall rest and hand walking," a few days of Rimadyl, and recovered nicely. However, I notice that he doesn't seem to be recovering as fast from his hind end sprain.

Anyway, the vet thinks that some Dasuquin might be helpful for him, or at the least, not hurt him. It's not too expensive, and I'm inclined to try it, especially if it helps Duffy with his activity level. It's made by the company that makes Cosequin.

Just wondering if anyone here has tried it, did you have good results? Any wierd side effects? Thanks. :)

We (the clinic I work at) carry it exclusively now instead of Cosequin. I have 3 of my dogs on it and I love it. It's not something that will undo any damage already done but it is definitely recommended for aging, active dogs. I have never known of any dog having side effects. It's pretty palatable, too. We have tons of patients on it.

I have had great luck with PetThrive - I started using it when I started with the Equithrive for the boys. Brie has been a new dog on it! I also give it to Gus because he is old, but he really doesn't have any issues.

Thanks guys. Duffy sure enjoyed eating his liver flavored tablet last night. More treats, he thinks! ;) No, I don't expect it to undo anything, but hoping that it will at least help support his joints as he is getting quite old, and maybe make him more comfortable this winter. :) I know tons of people that take glucosamine and MSM and have good results!

It's probably not quite the info you're looking for steph, but I started my two 13 year old cats on it a couple of months ago and have really liked the results. They're litter mates and the larger one was starting to show her age, specifically having a hard time jumping up on the bed. We started them both on it b/c they're the same age and it's cheap. The one with problems has show noticeable improvement, she's not 100% but I would it's probably 50% better. Unexpectedly, her sister showed a noticeable increase in activity and energy level, so we've kept up with it.

I hope it works for the Duffster!

Duffy has been getting the Dasuquin for about a week and a half now. It's possible that I am just looking for positive signs, but I really think it's helping him. He still naps a lot (he is 14 after all), but the other night he grabbed his tennis ball and wanted to play! He also seems to be moving easier, less stiff. He never really had signs of arthritis, but this does seem to be making him feel better. I guess if I keep noticing it long term then I will know it's not a coincidence! :) But anything within reason that I can do to make his life a bit better is definitely worth it.

Thanks all. :)
