Well, I won't need a gentle leader. She has made so much progress in just a few days being here, it's amazing. We just came from a long walk on the farm and she walked quiet nicely. An occasional gentle but firm correction was all that was needed. I'll try to get more pics. So far it's been hard to get any good ones.

Things here have been back and forth. Idgie is a perfect house dog! So sweet around here and very easy to live with. However, she is starting to be dog aggressive when we are out walking. It's the one of the things that I cannot live with. Such a shame. She is 95% an awesome dog. The 5% is not an option for me. I'm feeling like this may not work out. It will break my heart to have to send her back, but I cannot live with dog aggressive.

Oh, bh2, I'm sorry that you've found an issue. Can you talk to your trainer friend about it? Is this something that could be worked on? What does she do and how does it manifest?

She had come such a long way in her leash walking in just a few days. She is really loose lead walking very nicely. However, she is afraid of a lot of things, and it manifests itself in her becoming very aggressive, barking, hackles up and dragging me. Dog aggression is such a complicated issue, and according to all the shelter people I talk to, becoming more and more common. I walk a lot and need a dog that is very friendly and social with everyone we encounter. I guess there are two options. Keep her as mostly a house dog with short walks just on my quiet road close to home, or spend a ton of money that I don't have on a trainer, and not know going in how successful it will be. I cannot stand dog aggressive behavior. It's so stressful. I really enjoy taking my dogs out and about with me. It's the main reason I have a dog. It will be terrible to send her back, but if I'm not comfortable I will. I told the rescue organization when I took her that I would keep for a month in foster type situation and see how it goes, so I will. It's only been a week. It will be hard to return her, the trip was terrible for her. We'll see what the next few weeks bring.

Aw, BH2, I am so sorry that this behavior is starting in Idgie. Honestly, it is the one thing about Duffy that I have never liked. He barks and carries on when he sees another dog, especially when we're out walking. He is used to the neighbor dogs, and as long as they are all in their own yards he is fine, but when he's out and about, it can get bad. In fact, the one "good" thing about Duffy being mostly deaf is that he doesn't hear a lot of other dogs barking. There have been several dogs over the years that Duffy has gotten along with well, but we have to be so careful about him meeting new dogs.

I do think you're right that a lot of it is fear. I used to think it was a "terrier thing," and it could be partly that, but it only got worse after he had been jumped on a few times by bigger dogs while we were out walking. I have tried in my own amateur way to train him to not carry on so much, but nothing seems to really work.

I really really really hope for your sake and Idgie's that you can work through this. Perhaps your trainer friend has some ideas? Could she still be stressed from all that she has gone through recently? I don't blame you if you can't live with that, like I said it's the one thing with Duffy that I have never liked, I just decided that I could live with it. But we have a different lifestyle than you do.

If I was okay with just having a dog that stayed around home, it would be fine. I'm not okay with that. I walk. A lot. I need a dog that can walk with me. She's a big, very strong dog when she's riled up. It's really heartbreaking. Like I said, her house manners are impeccable. Maybe I can learn to live without a dog to walk. It's a shame I don't have more money, a trainer would be a huge help I'm sure. Dog aggression is such a tough thing.

All this being said, I should probably give her a break. She was literally accosted on our walk today by FIVE loose dogs at once. Three corgis, a golden and a border collie that live on the farm where I walk all came flying up to us at once. Her trial here is three more weeks. Just like a few days ago, I probably need to take a step back, stay on the road here at home with her. We may run into dogs here, but at least it will be just one at a time.

BH - I would bet any dog who has been through what she has been through would have the same reaction in this situation. Hugs & hope you can figure things out. She sounds like a lovely girl who just needs some love & confidence to really shine.

Very well said! From my experience, and from talking with other dog owners, there is nothing that sets off a dog who is on a leash more than being accosted by loose dogs. And five at once has got to be unnerving! I think Duffy would have a seizure!

I really do hope you can figure this out. Perhaps she is still just very insecure.

Being rushed like that by loose dogs would probably un-nerve a saint. She certainly was in an awful situation through no fault of her own or of yours. I know you want this to work and feel sure that you will do everything you can to make that happen. :luck:  :luck:  :luck:

Angel get aggressive when playing! Guess she bit Wren the old dog! But Wren snarls are her a lot! They do not play either.

Never been able to let Angel loose with other dogs! She annoys them and a fight may ensue!

But Angel is not attached to me. She loved Mother and Al! Silly dog!

I would give her some time to adjust to life with you. Being approached by a bunch of strange, loose dogs is enough to bother most dogs let alone one whose world has just been upturned.

Riley can get somewhat dog aggressive when on the leash. Mostly, I think it's because he's a bit protective and he's also socially inept so he gets riled up when he sees another dog when we're walking. If he and the other dog are both loose, then he's really fine. He can check out the other dog, figure out it's deal and then go about his business (he's likely to hump or lick the other dog but that's about it), but for him there's something about being "trapped" on his leash that makes him stupid. When we first got him, he would turn himself inside out if another dog approached him when we were out for a walk. Snarling and posturing, the whole deal. It's taken time, but now he can handle other dogs existing while we walk, and lately he's even been approached by loose dogs and not lost his shit. Mostly I try to just not make a big deal out of the other dogs. If I can, I do cross the street just so we don't have any personal encounters, but so long as I keep him moving, he's pretty good. If he gets his back up and starts to get upset, I make him sit and focus on me for a minute to calm down and then we go on our way.
