I wish obedience was my life. It's depressing because I am so bad at it. Portrait is so smart, I know she could learn anything very quickly if I was just better at teaching her.

I took your advice this morning BH1 and it worked wonders. I briefly corrected her, than made her circle around me about five times in the first quarter mile. She was 90% better after that. We are going to out and practice again later today.

So glad Portrait is working out so far BH2!! She is a lovely girl. That is a pretty big difference in the age you thought she was, though I agree, at least she can have a great home for the rest of her life however long it is.

I wish I knew more about obedience too. I was lucky with Duffy because he's pretty easy to train and sort of "naturally" didn't get into a lot of trouble in the house. But probably if I knew obedience training better he might have gotten better at his issues with other dogs when he was younger. (Of course having other dogs jump on him did not help.)

Anyway, back to the topic, she is just lovely BH2. She seems very smart too, and I really really really hope she works out for you. I bet she will be a great companion.

I talked to a dog trainer friend of mine this morning. She has worked at our local shelter for 20 years, so her specialty is obviously dogs that have been rehomed. I was glad I talked to her because she gently told me that I am pushing Portrait way too fast too soon. She has not even been here for 72 hours, and I am trying to force her into my routine. My friend told me that it takes 5-7 days for cortisol to return to normal levels after high stress. She said every time you stress her, you are upping the level again. She told to give her a week and ask very little of her during that time. After that, begin to slowly work with her on the minor (very) issues that I am having. She reminded me that Portrait does not know me, does not trust me, and has no reason to even believe that this home is forever. I was glad I spoke to her, because I needed that reminder.

I think she'll calm down on the leash after she gets used to you and to seeing the neighborhood. Everything is so new to her, and I think time will help everything.

When I got my last dog, he was older (a very mature 3 or so year old), and we just had to adapt to each other. I had an older girl that did nothing wrong, he took socks and undies to the back porch, which was raised-we solved that when I moved to a place that had a closet door, and actually used to close the door. He liked to take my tv guide for a ride to the porch-one yell solved that, and he was smart and learned quickly that when mommy calls you a few names that she's not happy. It took a few months to totally adapt to each other, but it happened and he was great. I wasn't very good at communicating with him, but he was smart enough to figure out what I wanted. I really miss him.

So Portrait has a new name. Although I like the name Portrait, it doesn't exactly roll of the tongue easily. She also does not know it at all, so changing it won't be a problem for her. I have decided to name her after my favorite movie character of all time, Idgie. Idgie was a woman that had lot of pain in the early part of her life. :,( In spite of the pain and sadness she endured, she maintained her wonderful positivity and spirit. She was a true survivor. She was smart, funny, and the MOST loyal friend ever! I think it's the perfect name. I always wanted to have two female dogs and name them Idgie and Ruth.
For those of you that don't know, Idgie and Ruth are the lead characters in Fried Green Tomatoes. If you haven't seen it, you should! You will probably watch it more than once.

Love the name and love that movie. I've actually been to the Whistle Stop Cafe, where it was filmed several times. It's AWESOME. If anyone ever has a chance to go, go! The town it's in, Juliet was on the way to being a ghost town, basically until they decided to shoot the movie there. Now it's an adorable little street with cute shops and the Whistle Stop! Best fried green tomatoes and sweet tea ever!

Aw BH2 I love the new name too.

Agree that she probably just needs some time to settle into her new life. She is so lucky to have found you, though!
