BH2 -

We use this Easy Walk Harness for our dogs and it works really well. After a few times of getting turned around both of our dogs quite pulling. The puppy still tests it when she is excited, but our older dog is a breeze with it on.

Good luck in the transition! I hope it works out for both of you :luck:

I'm glad Portrait seems to be be settling into her new home with you. You've done a good thing rescuing each other.

Has anyone used a gentle leader?

I've used both a Gentle Leader head-collar and a Halti with Riley. He used to be a total sh*t on a leash, turning himself inside-out at anything he wanted to chase or at other dogs. We tried the Gentle Leader harness but he's kind of funny shaped (big dog body, short little legs) so we had a hell of a time keeping it on him. But the head-style collars have worked wonders with him. I prefer the Halti to the Gentle Leader, I feel it fits Riley's head better because it's got a bit more structure to it - it looks more like a horse halter while the Gentle Leader one is more of a figure-8 loop. Another reason I prefer the Halti is that it has a little safety strap that hooks back to the dog's regular collar so just in case he manages to slip his head out (which has happened, he likes to rub it on things), he's still attached to the leash. When we first got him, I couldn't walk him on my own (he would pull me off my feet) but with his Halti he's totally manageable. If he flips the fck out about something, all I have to do is plant my feet. He hits the end of the leash and quits. Rarely now does that even need to happen anymore, but it's nice to know that I have reinforcement. In hindsight, we probably should have sought out some training for him too because a lot of his issues are social, but even just doing things on our own the Halti was a huge help.

Wow, the reviews on the Halti are really amazing. I just sent a message to a trainer friend to see what she has to say. Her pulling really isn't that bad, she is not an out of control maniac. I would just like her to walk a little slower and drag me a little less. This might be what I need.

Bless you for adopting her, she is lovely - I hope it works out!!!!

My girls were horrible on the leash, so we put them in the HS prong collar - might be more than what Portrait needs, but it works very well. No pulling, they walk politely, and they share a split lead with no trouble. I had tried the Halti on my old Weim but she hated it and would turn herself inside out and basically refuse to walk with it on her head! The prong collar worked well for her, too.

Give Miss P a kiss for me! :rose: <3

BH2, she is lovely, and it sounds like you guys are getting to know each other.

I love Gentle Leaders. The only dog I've ever known them not to work on is my mom's crazy BC/hound mix. Every other dog I have used them with has done really well with them. The Halti is similar in principle to the Gentle Leader, but if I remember correctly, it is not fixed/tightened under their chin so it slips around too much for my taste.

She sounds like one lucky lady! I'm glad you two have found each other and I wish you all the best!

She's really gorgeous BH, and to me she looks quite happy to be home in that picture. I hope you both settle into a great routine together in the coming weeks.

Any advice on the walking problems would be appreciated. Has anyone used a gentle leader? She really isn't too bad, she just needs some reinforcement I think.
There is a purebred Husky at the shelter where I volunteer. He is the worst puller EVER.
We walk 2 feet, he pulls (stands on hind legs and jerks like a train), we turn around. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
I do not pull back. Lots of circles!

He could easily pull me down, so I'm not fighting him.
After 2 days, on a "loose rein" he figured out this game.
We walk for almost an hour and just when he starts to pull he turns, looks up at me and you can see his "wheels turning." He simply stops pulling.
Now he walks on a loose leash, with an occassional loss of memory. We walk very slowly and I let him relax.
He was so stressed at first he whined constantly when we'd circle. A gentle distraction (usually a light tap on his haunches) always stops the whine.

Obedience is my life BH2 ;)

I have used gentle leaders and they are ok. My best results have been with a loose lead, being very relaxed and not fighting. A trainer would be a great idea.

My vet told me I have the most relaxed dogs ever LOL
