Her general energy level will be the make it or break it. If she is at all high energy, it probably won't work. Any little bit of separation anxiety, and it won't work. I don't like to generalize about breeds, but most of the shepherds I have known have not been high energy. I'm hoping that's the case here.

That is so awesome. :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles:

I have to agree with you that Shepards are pretty easy. The shepard mix we had was the best dog ever. Not high energy, but was a blast to play with. He loved his crate and would go in on his own whenever he was tired. He was very protective and just perfectly behaved from the start. If he did something wrong, I only ever had to tell him no once and he didn't do it again. He also smiled on comand and then it became a habit, whenever he was excited, he would show his teeth. It freaked a lot of people out... Nothing like huge white fangs shown at you when he came dancing up.

Cocoa was a Shepherd mix and the easiest dog ever. Again, I never like to generalize about breeds, and I am going to have to be very careful about making comparisons. That's why in the past I have gotten dogs that are very different from each other. My dog before Cocoa was tiny. I still love small dogs, but I think at this point in my life a large dog is a better choice. I'm going to be holding my breath on this for a long time. It's going to take a long time for her to settle in after such a huge change, and a very stressful trip. It will be a while before I even see her true personality.
I will say that the Shepherd in Cocoa made her the smartest dog I have ever had. Once you live with a dog that is that intelligent, you realize that it's an entirely different experience. I love that intelligence and trainability.

She has been here since Saturday afternoon. We are going through an adjustment obviously for both of us, but i think it's going pretty well all things considered. I am going through the loss of a perfect dog that I had a wonderful routine with. She is going through an upheaval, an entirely new life, and she has no way to know if this is permanent or not.
All that being said, she is a perfect house dog. She settles very quickly inside and is 100% housebroken. The leash walking needs some work. She pulls, but not horribly. She's been pretty reactive to a few other dogs that we have passed, and also to passing cars. I think I may get some professional help with the leash walking, I am not a dog trainer and it's important to me that she develop nice leash manners. She learned how to use the dog door this morning in five seconds flat. I'm not using it yet though, she needs to be a lot more at home here before I would trust her going outside when I wasn't home. I have been coming and going a lot, getting her used to the fact that I will leave, but always come back. No problems with that at all. She does not climb stairs, the first night I pulled out the sofa and slept downstairs with her. Last night, I was exhausted. I went upstairs at 7:30, I didn't come back down until 6 this morning. I never heard a peep from her.
She is a lot older than I was led to believe. I was told 5, her teeth tell me closer to 10. That's not a completely bad thing though given my schedule. She may not be able to walk a million miles with me like I was hoping, but I have no problem giving a good home to a senior that needs one. Some dogs go their entire lives just waiting for one person to come along and be good to them. :,(
I have a feeling that she was a breeding dog, from either a puppy mill or a really irresponsible breeder. They tend to breed these girls many, many times, then dump them on the side of the road when they get to be this age. Poor girl. :sigh:
Ill keep you guys posted and put up some pics soon. Any advice on the walking problems would be appreciated. Has anyone used a gentle leader? She really isn't too bad, she just needs some reinforcement I think.
