Mattresses: Traditional or Cool Gel Memory Foam; I know we've done tons of these, but I'm worried about making the wrong decision

So I have need a new mattress for years...about 7 of them. Since about 6 weeks after buying my current mattress. That's approximately 2 weeks AFTER I was allowed to return it. :shoot: I am in pain every night, often times it's enough that I will take Ibuprofen to get through the night.

I had decided on buying a bed from a hotel chain. They've had so many guests ask about the bed, you can actually order a new one. But then I wasn't sure. The first night I slept in one, AMAZING! But then this year, I stayed at the hotel three more nights and while the bed was comfortable, I wasn't blown away...and started second guessing my decision. It's not super expensive at $1400, but enough of a cost that I don't want to screw it up again.

Fast forward to yesterday. We have a retailer going out of business and everything is at least 50% off. I went looking for a headboard for cheap (found that) but started laying on the beds. I got to thinking, "Why not buy from here?" I narrowed it down to a Simmons Beauty Rest pillow top and a Diamon Cool Gel memory foam. They would be $700 and $900 respectively...and yet I'm still worried about 1)making the wrong choice and 2)not being able to return them if they suck.

So, anyone what to give me some advice? Do I take the risk on a good price or hold off and go with the bed that I have slept in and no that I like? What about traditional vs. foam? Durability, comfort, etc? Ugh...I am so worried about this decision I don't know if I can make it. Eek.

I would not go with the pillow top. I think they sag and lump quickly. I am considering the Memory foam gel ones as well so I am looking forward to the answers from others.

Please share the name of the bad one so we can all stay away.

Kassandra just bought a Tempurpedic and loves it. Honestly, if it were me and I had a bad mattress experience last time, I wouldn't buy anything that I couldn't return. I would imagine if they were going out of business, returning it wouldn't be an option? I say wait and do a lot of shopping and find one you LOVE - not one that'll do.

WFM: Bad bed is by Englander. I know some people with them that LOVE them, maybe I just got a dud.

After some research today...I'm not so sure the Going out of Business place is offering that great of a deal. I think they've inflated prices to then offer 1/2 off, but it's hard to tell, b/c comparison shopping for a mattress is REALLY, REALLY difficult as it turns out. :mallet:

I had a Kingsdown pillowtop for 6 years and hated it. It was way too soft. We got a tempurpedic almost 2 years ago and we LOVE the bed. I miss it when we go away.

In fact that's intentional. Sealy probably makes the same bed with 15 different labels so that furniture stores can call it something else. :brickwall: I think Consumer Reports wrote an article about it a few years ago.

Lone voice of dissent - I *hate* Tempurpedic and their ilk. :tomato: To me they feel sticky, I feel hot and sweaty... and they smell bad. But I have long been known for being a princess about mattresses. So I have a pillow top. The only think I resent about the pillow top is you can't flip them.

I'd pass on a 'going out of business' sale were it me.

I have had several mattresses that were all 'top of the line' . I wasn't in love with any. My favorite mattress has been my Tempurpedic. I was hesitant to get it but I had so many friends who swore by them. It has made a huge difference in my back/neck/shoulder pain. I'm all achy when I am out of town!

As for the heat, that was my biggest fear since I had to get rid of my memory foam topper because it was soooo hot. I have had no issues with this mattress however

I have the Serta iComfort (their version of memory foam with some sort of "cooling gel" in it). I'm in love with the thing. Best money I ever spent. I had a eurotop before that I grew to loathe. My back was killing me every morning.

Some places (furniture and mattress places are masters of this) have this going out of business routine down to an exact science. They do exactly as you said, inflate the prices, mark them down to half or so, and rip you off. Then they technically go out of business, incorporate under another name, and usually the same people still own it, or sometimes they sell to a relative to change it up a little. Then because they went out of business they don't have to honor returns or refunds, and it's pure profit.

Anyone else getting the Sealy mattress ad at the bottom? That's funny.

Love my new medium firm temperpedic. Mr K is a hot sleeper and does not find it hot at al. The newer ones have more air in them?

I just finished spending 3 nights at the Aria on their custom mattesses and it was hell. I am now spoiled by my temperpedic and am a customer for life, its transformed my sleep.

Whatever you do, by something with a return policy.

So I went into another store that carried the same foam mattress line to price compare. It's was about $200 less, but the sales person said something interesting. She said that in CA, it is illegal to return a mattress. At least that's why she justified not having a return policy. I don't think it's illegal to return it...it' just illegal for them to re-sell the mattress.

:sigh: I've basically done nothing. I'm betting that in a year I will still be sleeping on the same old, terrible mattress. Even though I've had the money for quite some time, I'm totally paralyzed by the idea that I'm going to make a bad decision again. :shoot:

And there's the Serta Memory Gel (or something like that). And today they announced that Sealy was bought by Tempur-Pedic, buth they supposedly will stay as separate companies. Then there's the ad at the bottom of the page for us-mattress with a 100 day comfort guarantee-there are only 4 million choices and as many sellers, and I hate buying mattresses so I understand where you're coming from with this one. If you're going to spend a lot on a mattress, then definitely find a company that will offer a guarantee, because just as you said, you don't want to get stuck again with a bad one. Sometimes the smaller local companies are better, because they want to keep you as a customer, and they want you to tell others how great they are.

Oh dear. I just bought a new mattress. One that is twice my budget...which wasn't shabby to start with. Apparently, I'm a sucker for the soft sell by an adorable salesman. :innocent:

It's a mid level Tempurpedic with a 100 day return policy. It will be delivered on Saturday. I'm so hoping I wasn't just charmed out of a ton of money. :sigh:
