any it's not just a regular kids saddle she needs - darn it when did it get so complicated and expensive??? We noticed in her current Pessoa Pony 15 in short flap that she is suddenly posting off the back of the saddle and leg is shooting ou in front - the old "chair seat". Put her in the next size up Pessoa and it's not really all that much better. Have had a few professional opinions that have stated that in fact, it's her thigh length, she needs a forward flap AND a bigger seat size to accomodate the thigh. Lovely, well I have a budget of $1000... kinda hard to find a forward flap with that. I did find an Antares that she LOVES and I'm hoping to find a way to pay for it, it's $1950 with fittings and cover, but in case I can't scrounge up that much, anyone have other suggestions of websites to hit, or saddle brands to try? We also tried a PJ 16.5 seat (unbelievably) that I loved, but Maya said it was not as comfy as the Antares (it's much older), but it was less expensive so it may be a back up plan.

Any other thoughts?

Look for a Vega or a Beval Natural. I am long from hip to knee and have never had the funds to go custom. The Vega is slightly more forward than most brands and you can get the Beval Natural with lots of different flap configurations. For me, I had a 1 1/2 flap in the Natural, which is regular length, forward degree.

Check out Beval's used saddle site: www.allthebestusedsaddles.com, www.fineusedsaddles.com and www.highendusedsaddles.com.

Also, if you try a saddle you like, look for it on eBay.

Best of luck! Saddle shopping kinda stinks.

thanks! I do like the Beval Natural and I like that it comes in pony size with the forward flap, however there are none anywhere in the right size/price combination used. I will keep it in mind as well as the Vega! Thanks

You'll have trouble equalling the comfort of an Antares on $1000, but there's definitely cheaper options out there. Saddler's Row has two 16" Collegiate Convertible Diplomas on consignment, one with the long flap option and one with the standard (already forward) flap for $850 or less. There's also a 16" wide tree Ovation Competition Jump with the long flap at Rick's for $699, brand new. That is a really nice saddle for the money; I'd put it on par quality-wise with some of the tack retailing at $2000.

thanks, we tried an Equipe Pony saddle today that fit her like custom, for $1150 on sale, but it's a little too wide for her pony. not sure we'll find anything non-custom for the pony, though so we'll see. Trying the Antares on her tomorrow!

Try the Crosby Centennial - It comes in many different seat/flap options.

I *think* we have found our new saddle,it's an Antares... :o but Maya's position is 1000% improved in it, and seems to fit the pony as best we can fit her with a Mattes pad for now, and it fits the other ponies she rides as well. Gonna try it again tomorrow to be sure, but I think we found a winner!

Glad you found a saddle! Hopefully it's close enough to your price range that it doesn't cause issues.

I can definitely relate. My saddle cost more than what my horse did as well.
