First I want to make a quick Nemo update- He's dong great! His back is 100% better and he's like a changed horse. Calm, quiet, relaxed....SO much fun to ride and be around. He's W/T/C on the flat with very nice lead changes, and jumping a bunch of small fences. Started trotting some lines with him the other day and he stayed nice and relaxed. The hard work is starting to pay off and I'm so happy with the results.:) It looks as if we will be moving to the NoVA area so looking for some advice/guidance. I don't need anything fancy, just good care with turn out. Don't have to have an indoor. Don't really want a training program. Would prefer there was a trainer there with some experience with OTTB's as he still has his moments. Don't want full care, I prefer to do my own. I'd like to eventually show but certainly not the A circuit and only a few times a year if at all. I'm doing this for fun. I really like a relaxed atmosphere with not a ton of pressure. Would love if there were some trails available. I'd like to stay within 30-45 minutes of the Alexandria/Falls Church area. What am I realistically looking to pay? Is what I'm looking for out there? Any suggestions/recommendations on where to start looking? Thanks ladies, I appreciate it. Feel free to PM, I'll need all the help I can get. |

So I've been told that the 30-45 minute commute isn't very reasonable. I'm willing to further, any suggestions at all? When I stated I don't want full care, I just mean that I don't need Nemo groomed/tacked before I get there. I still want him fed/turned out/stall cleaned, etc. Sorry for any confusion. |

I would look on the Virginia Equestrian website for boarding in Alexandria/Fairfax Station and Clifton. $550-850 if you want wood fencing and a footed riding ring. Drive time depends on whether you mean non-rush hour (doable in 30) or rush hour (not a chance). Big Day commutes from Alexandria to my barn in Clifton so she can likely give you drive times. |

RH has pointed you in the right direction. That is a good start. Driving around here is a nightmare and expect to sit in traffic and commute to the barn no matter when you go...pretty much a fact of life around here. |

also, keep in mind that if you are in Alexandria close to the beltway, maryland may actually be closer in the PG county part...it's a bit "not high brow" but cheaper than VA. Trixie boarded someplace with an indoor winter before last for a *song* so don't rule that out. |

Thanks ladies. Will look into the Fairfax Station area. RHowell I was at the place that Trixie had Wings at and AngelJesus before she took her home. All the horses there seemed very happy and healthy so I certainly won't rule that out. The commute doesn't bother me as much as making sure there's good care and turn out. Certainly lots to think about/try to plan. Any suggestions in that area that pop into your mind are most welcome. I haven't boarded at a farm in a long, long time. |

most of the excellent care comes from training barns, which you said you didn't want. if care is your top priority, you may have to go to a trainer's barn or find a small private setting that has one or two boarders (like my barn, but we're full) in which case, those are just going to come from turning over a lot of stones. |

My commute from Alexandria, right outside of Old Town, to Clifton is WONDERFUL! I was schlepping out to Warrenton for 1.5 years and that was a miserable commute taking over an hour each way with no traffic. My commute now is traffic-free and takes 40 mins at most. Plus, it is a pretty drive, so I never mind it. That said, it is not easy finding a place to board in that area. I have found it to be primarily word of mouth and even that is limited. I would agree with RH that it takes a lot of time and turning over a lot of stones to find the right place, but absolutely worth it. Personally, I wouldn't want to go to Maryland. Trainers are limited, as are farriers and vets. I like being around the horsey community we have in NOVA with easy access to horse shows, trainers and vet clinics for emergencies. Good luck with your search! |
