Is the meadow on fire?

I am a full chap type of girl! I have two pairs of custom full chaps. The newer pair twists and hurts my hip. The older pair is the ugliest pair of chaps ever made, but they fit well. I wanted a cow hide belt...well, it is cow...from a winter in Siberia. Looks a little bit like a black and white labrador.

Anyway, I may come into this century and buy half chaps (I need new paddock boots as well). I don't want to buy custom until I make sure I like them, but I may not have an off the rack type leg.

They need to be very tall and accomodate a runner/muscular type calf. I have custom field boots so I am not looking to show in them. I want to look neat and workman like without flapping straps. And the worst thing would be if they slipped down. They need to make me stick like glue when Connor over jumps and clears the standards. Should be easy, right? ;) Price frame is wide if they fit, and will last.

I think the worst thing will be having to wear breeches all the time, but I will figure that out later.

I love love love my custom journeyman half chaps. They are so comfortable, well made, and are great. I couldn't find anything off the shelf that would last - the elastic always gave out in the long run. They were base priced at $175 or so, and ended up around $300 with the custom options I picked. Chuck Pinnell's work is GORGEOUS, but soooo expensive.

I have Parlanti boots and half chaps. The half chaps are off the rack. I love them and they fit and wear as well as my custom boots. They are the only off the rack chaps that have lasted me longer than 5-6 months. I'm going on three possibly four years with them. I took a long look at them the other day and they hardly show any wear other than some frayed stitching and I ride more than one every day. I think they are in the $200-300 range. It's been so long I can't remember.

I don't know who has them in the US but you can call and they will send you multiple pairs to try and send back what you don't want.

Pinnell does do lovely work so if you can't do a good off the rack he's an excellent choice.

I have Journeymans too and I adore them. I couldn't find off the racks that fit (I'm short and my calves are significantly different sizes) so custom was my only option. I've had them around 6 years and they're in fantastic shape. I didn't get many bells and whistles so mine came in under $200. They're not fancy (at least compared to Pinnells) but they're functional, soft, and still quite pretty.

I use Ariat half chaps. The all terrain type. They fit my long slim leg! They are cool and cheap at about 90. Last a long time.

If you can come in under $200, I'd go custom - I just got the Ariat close contact ones and I like them fine, but they were around $160 all said and done, I think. Maybe $170. But for such a small price difference? I'd go custom. Hmmm. Wish I had looked into this before getting new ones! Anyone with customs care to share a pic?

This is the only somewhat decent picture I have of mine:

They're a medium tan color with chocolate snakeskin trim and dark green piping. Soft as butter, but very durable.

If I were you, WFM, I'd try to find an el cheapo pair and make sure you're ok with riding in half chaps before you spend the $$$ on customs. Some people (like my former h/j trainer) who love their full chaps just hate them.

I have a pair of Ovations that were super cheap (like $25) that I got for this purpose... since I too prefer full chaps. I got them to try for summertime since they'd be cooler. I liked my cheapo ones so much that I haven't bought any nicer ones yet, the cheapies are machine washable too which is great. The ones I have are these:

Mine are dark charcoal with light blue piping and I bought 2 pairs since they were on sale. Someone from a rated hunter barn once complimented me on them and asked if they were customs, I about died laughing. :teehee: I'm generally a bit of a tack snob so these are slumming in my opinion!

I wear mine with jeans sometimes and they're fine. Mostly I wear them with full seats though as I need the extra stickiness! :)

Pinnells are absolutely drool-worthy and Journeymans are very nice for the price-- my fulls are Journeymans and I *loff* them. I suppose I'll eventually splurge on a custom pair of half chaps when my cheap ones wear out!

I like Barn Girl's suggestion. Honestly, *if* I ever went crazy and decided to convert, I'd probably do this first. I am a die-hard full chap wearer, be it in fashion or not. When I got my custom saddle, the rep and I went back and forth on the leather and the ONLY concession I would make was to ride in breeches with the chaps, but no way was I giving up my full chaps.

I have Journeyman chaps. I think I have some pics on Facebook which won't help as they are fulls, but I too love mine and they have held up great the last two years so far. Just saw Pinnell's at Devon and LOVELY, but $$$$$ and I almost wonder how I would ever be able to ride in such works of art...JMHO.

My chaps from high school are Crown Customs, and boy do I wish they were still in business...they still are in great shape and they were made in 1997.....

I have Tredsteps which I like but don't love. This is my second pair. I find they don't last all that long (I ride about 3 times per week and they last about 2-3 years). They also tend to stretch and slide down. (Maybe my expectations are too high????)

I have the same pair and like them quite a lot. They are quite tall and the only half chaps I've had that actually stay up where they should. I've had mine about a year and they are starting to wear a bit, but a trip to the leather guy to stitch up the seams and they will be good as new.

I have my first pair of Treadsteps and they are nice and tall, and they actually came in a small enough calf size to fit me. The ankles are a little bit difficult to snap over my boots, and thery pretty s no getting spurs under them. I think mine are about 6 months old and they are pretty worn. Im assuming they might make it another year. I ride around 12 times a week in them. One has stretched at the top, but I have a terrible habit of pulling it up from the top.

Do NOT get Dover customs.

I love, love, love my Grand Prix half chaps. They are the Italian made ones and don't have the stretch panel, I cannot seem to find them online. The leather is gorgeous. The lady at the shop put them on me and they barely went on, then she hosed my legs down with hot water, now they are so comfortable and better than custom.

Here is a really big picture of me in them after owning them for 6+ months and riding in them every day. They do clean up well!
