My boarder has decided that they will sell their just turned 5 year old QH. It was probably never a good match for his daughter, who has totally lost interest; they bought him when they were with another trainer as a coming 2 year old. He was going to be trained by the trainer, and daughter would get to ride trainer's BTDT mare for a few years. Fast forward, former trainer never worked with him, they left the trainer last year but horse has had minimal training since. He's probably only got about 30 "real" training rides on him, with too much time in between each one to make them very productive. So, it's good that he'll be moving on to someone who can bring him along. But obviously, it's not easy to sell a barely backed 14.3 QH. Any tips? Obviously putting him in training board for a couple of months would help (that was my thought) but not sure that will happen. He will still be ridden here by the trainer so hopefully by the end of summer (if not sooner) he can be a little further along. The most important thing for the sellers is that he find a good home. They would probably give him away to the better home v. sell him to a lesser home. I am willing to take pictures, video, etc. Videos of trainer riding, etc. I will pull his mane and keep him groomed up....not much else I can really do, although I suppose I could lunge him between work sessions....? What kind of pictures will help a sale like this (conformation shots?) Can someone post a really good one so I can study how best to take it? Thanks for any help. I hope he'll end up in a good place. He needs to go but I am worried that he'll end up in the wrong hands. |

no real suggestion other than to try to find someone through word of mouth and keep him in work the entire time he's being marketed for sale. He probably won't bring a tremendous amount of money so I would be open to any giveaway situation if you know the home is great. Good luck!! |

Hey TBF, I have a friend who runs an awesome summer camp. Her horses live the life and many have been there 10, 15, 20 years. He's the sort of type she likes.... 15h-ish, QH gelding. She doesn't mind very green as she has a very competent pro that starts horses for her and puts miles on them. If they are willing to sell him cheap she'd probably be very interested. Shoot me a PM if you think it'd be a match. |

Thanks Flash, I will ask the owner and let you know what he thinks. He's a good little horse, smart and pretty willing, but just hasn't done anything yet so he's not really for campers (yet). But he trailers great, goes to shows and has no issues with noise, fairgrounds, etc. He's been out and about a fair bit just not under saddle much. So word of mouth is still the best bet, but do you think it's worth doing video or conformation shots? I don't think they will actually list him for sale. I'm not sure they care about money, just a good fit. He has potential but isn't there yet. |

Yeah photos and vid can't hurt. Nowadays you have to do everything you can to move a horse, even a free one. I went all out and did a flyer, photos, vid of Bella when I was trying to rehome her. I didn't actively list her anywhere, instead I distributed the flyer to friends via e-mail and asked if they could forward on to anyone who might be interested. If I got an inquiry I then sent them additional photos and video. What about your local 4-H club or pony club? Or even lesson barns? Let the farrier and vet know too. Bella seriously found THE BEST HOME EVER, thanks to Facebook! I msg'd a bunch of my local horse friends, one of them passed the info along to her BFF, who is the one who took Bella. I never thought I'd be able to re-home a barely broke Morgan mare that bucked like a mofo but lo and behold, her person was out there. Gotta love social networking... He sounds like a cute little project pony! It is nice of you to help them out with him. |

Just to wrap this thread up - the very first person my boarder talked to about his horse wanted him. Just a random conversation with a casual friend and found out they were actually looking for, and hoping to find an inexpensive project horse to keep their other guy company and mainly go out on trails. An adult couple who have had horses forever, and they have two college aged kids home for the summer looking for a horse to work with, plus they will keep him in training with the current trainer. I believe it was a "re-home" with contract for first right of refusal should it not work out or they just can't keep him. They live about 6 miles away so we should be able to keep up with the little guy. ![]() He left today for his new life - I didn't even have a chance to brush his mane, let alone pull it. Just goes to show that word of mouth is the best way to advertise sometimes. Especially a horse like this. I think he might have found himself the perfect home. I hope it all works out! |
