Just got a text from the new Barn Owner...Cody and Connor are waiting for the farrier in a 12 x 24 foaling stall. Yes, together in the stall. I am at work and not able to see this for myself. They were not overly attached in Louisiana. When I first got to Columbia, I was able to take Connor out and work him with only a whinny or two. Since the abscess, Connor is completely attached to Cody. I don't think Cody cares either way. They are attached at the shoulder out in the pasture. I bring them in together and groom them together. They are completely quiet when they are together. But apart, Connor loses his mind (I have not seen this other than a bit of dancing on the cross ties as I go to get Cody). So, I am hoping Connor gets his shoe back on today and will be back in work tonight. If I ask to have Cody put in another pasture, Connor stands by the fence and will not come up for dinner and he doesn't graze. I am thinking a few days of utter stupidity and then he will get back in the routine. Any ideas? I have visions of riding Connor while ponying Cody...or having Cody tied in the ring when I ride. Only kidding! I won't give into that. |

It must be something in the air. My moms mare and my mare have lived together for years without issue. Last two months they go nuts if you attempt to separate them. It is such a pita. Can't leave one on the trailer while the other goes to the ring to show. |

Heili would live in the same skin as her BFF if we let her. The BFF really could care less, however (she likes Heili, but really she likes just about anyone). They lived next door to each other for several years and when the decision to move Heili into one of the main barns was made, she spun in circles in her stall and screamed her fool head off for freaking weeks. Now, three years later, she's fine in her stall unless her BFF is being tacked up in the aisle. Then once she can't see her, the spinning and screaming starts until the other mare comes back. When they're turned out together, you can take Heili in from the field and she's (relatively) fine but if take in the BFF and leave Heili outside, she has a melt down. Screaming, pacing back and forth in front of the gate, bucking, getting all lathered up, the works. I'm truly surprised she's never tried to come in over the gate. The two of them currently share a field with two other ponies, so that helps some - as in you have about a 5-10 minute window before Heili realizes her BFF is gone and looses her mind. Same thing goes with turning them out. If the BFF isn't out there, you have as much time as it takes Heili to survey her paddock before the meltdown happens. Honestly it concerns me because the BFF is not a young horse and odds are she'll go before Heili does and when that happens, it's going to be bad. We're all going to need good drugs to get through it. |
