I think River goes in one. I'm not sure and I can't really compare it with anything as the only other bit he's worn when I've been on him was when I was first backing him. I'll have to check, but if it is, River seems to think it's not a lot of bit. I think my trainer just started using one on her just-turned 5 yr old. She switched to it because Jack is awfully busy with his head so thought it might give her a steadier feel. |

So far, not impressed. Holding it in my hand, yes it clearly has a different action. It locks and essentially turns into a mullen. What I don't get is why that's supposed to help a puller. IME a mullen is a really soft/gentle bit-- so it'd be easier to pull against a mullen than even to pull against a plain old jointed snaffle?! So when to pull back, you make the bit MORE mild. I don't get the reasoning there?! I rode in it. Didn't jump. Didn't notice any difference. Will try a few more times, but certainly it was no magic first time out. |

what size do you have? if you don't end up liking it, I can ask trainer if she wants to try it on any horses. I'm sure you'd be able to sell it and recoup some money if you don't think it works for your horse. |

5.5. I am going to give it a few more tries... but I don't know that this is going to make a difference.

Many old-school trainers, including Jimmy Wofford (of eventing fame), suggest that horses that pull are actually asking for a milder bit. It IS easier to pull against a mullen, but Wofford would say "the horse has very little incentive to pull against a mullen because really, what could the horse be upset about? He doesn't even have the nutcracker action of a snaffle to get annoyed with. There's no reason to be annoyed, so perhaps he will not be annoyed and will cut it out." According to this theory, the horse pulls because it's annoyed by the bit action or the hands holding the bit, and the horse might give up its annoyance campaign and struggle for power if the bit was just less irritating. A lot of folks find that hard to believe because they grew up around the exact opposite philosophy; I certainly did. And of course, great trainers like Wofford recognize that there are other reasons a horse might pull: training issues, pain issues, a hands-y rider, an extremely fit horse or a horse coming back from injury that absolutely MUST be kept at the walk, etc. But in cases where training/pain/hands/etc. have been eliminated as factors, it's amazing how often a bit-down actually works. And since we can't ask the horse "Hey, are you just annoyed?" there's no way to test that theory besides bitting back down and riding the horse correctly to see what effect you get. Understandably, most amateur riders who didn't grow up around that bitting philosophy are terrified to try a milder bit on their freight-train horse. And that is the genius of the Stubben EZ Control's advertising campaign. Stubben has convinced most riders that buying an EZ Control is "bitting the horse up so it'll stop pulling" when in fact it's "bitting the horse down to just about the mildest mouthpiece on the market, which may give the horse an incentive to stop pulling." Very clever stuff. Edited by jn4jenny, May 19 2012, 09:40 PM.

Tell that to Frankie then, who can leave 2 out because he just gets rolling between fences I don't know that it's PULLING so much as just being dang strong and preferring to go on the forehand and build. I tried every mild but known to man, and for a lot less than $75 could have just bought a plain old mullen

Well let's be fair to the EZ Control people: there are probably a handful of horses on earth who would genuinely prefer the mullen/snaffle combo action over a plain ol' mullen. But I'm guessing those horses are exceedingly rare. As for "it would have been cheaper to just buy a mullen," yeah, it would. Leave it to the tack industry to get people to spend $80 to test a $25 theory. |

which is why a friend of mine wants to start a bit selling business where you can take them on trial :)... I think it's an awesome idea! I seriously think you can sell that bit pretty easily though V, of course I'm sure not for full price. |

I think BoB does bit rentals, though IIRC not with the Stubben bits. It's a great idea. |
