My aunt was big into Arabians for much of the 90's, and had a lovely mare that went to both US and Canadian Nationals. The mare sustained a pasture injury when she was about 6 and was retired as a broodmare. http://pets.webshots.com/photo/1374695782072721606xalukg?vhost=pets My aunt went through a divorce, sold her two geldings, and placed the mare with a breeder. She kept track of her over the years and occasionally got updates on the mare and her offspring. She recently contacted the breeder to see how the mare was doing. Turns out the mare was shot in the head last spring, and her 4 week old colt was shot in the leg but survived. The police have investigated and there has been a reward offered, but there's been no indication as to who did it or what the motive was. The farm where she was living was in a very rural area, tucked back off the road, and her pasture was behind a barn. None of the other horses on the property were harmed. My aunt is just devastated. You read about this stuff on TOB but don't realize it actually *happens*.... kwim? She was also a little upset the breeder didn't contact her when it occurred, but the woman was so distraught she ended up selling her horses and her farm and only keeping the colt and one stallion. She said she didn't know how to tell my aunt what had happened. Anyway I guess it is a wake up call... I know there have been a few discussions on here about people wandering up to fences/fields/farms and while you like to think people have good intentions, I suppose you just never know. That is awful! I would be very upset if I didn't find out for a long period of time that my horse had been shot. |

I know! I was shocked the breeder had not contacted my aunt directly and waited all this time, until my aunt contacted her..... I have no background on the breeder, maybe there was some domestic unrest or something else going on there. Regardless very sad, all the way around.

That's horrifying! People are sick. While I'm sure the situation was traumatic for the breeder, I'd be extremely upset if I were your aunt that I didn't find out sooner. It's bad enough that the mare died, even worse to not know for a whole year. |

Agreed. And if I'd been the breeder, I probably would have offered one of the foals to my aunt... if she still had any. I don't think she bred her often but I know she had at least a couple babies on the ground. |

A horse attack of that sort happened in my area last autumn. A horse in his pasture was shot and killed. Location was on a back road. That time the culprits were caught; they were young hunters who were angry at the last day of the season that they had not gotten their deer so just went and shot "something". I am glad our herd is by a more travelled county road. |

That mare was beautiful. What a horrific story. I think someone shot one of my horses with a BB gun a few years ago. Came home from work and was bringing them in and she could hardly walk. She had a tiny round hole in her elbow. Vet (and I) suspected that is what happened. I live out in the sticks and I think some kid got a BB gun for Christmas. She recovered with no after effects. As far as the breeder not nofifying your aunt, maybe she was trying to save your aunt some pain. Sounds like they weren't in constant contact so maybe she thought (and hoped) your aunt had kind of forgotten about the mare. Both ladies have my sympathy. (and you too) |
