So, the GHH is being treated for ulcers. He's getting the paste stuff right now. What I'm wondering is, once they are treated, what have people used for maintenance/preventative? I'm thinking of putting him on the U-gard pellets. Suggestions? I had used Neigh-lox before but vet doesn't love that as its not really solving the problem he says... |

We had a very elderly gelding (36 years old) who developed ulcers and we put him on famotodine (generic Pepcid) plus generic tums. He had no relapses and stayed comfortable until he died (of other causes). It would be easier to use ratinidine as it requires less frequent dosing but costs a little more. |

See if you can get compounded omeprazole. It is what is in UlcerGard and is the only proven drug in treating ulcers. Some vets are able to get it in a compounded form that can be fed as a daily supplement and it is much cheaper than UlcerGard. I think it may still require a prescription, but not 100% sure. |

I have had really good luck with a few different products...all really depends on the individual horse...but my tried and true is Finish Lines U7 Gastric Aid liquid...also Uckele's GUT is great stuff too-even the fussiest of eaters seem to like it, Smart Gut Pellets, and Succeed Is also good stuff...and Aloe Vera Juice that you get from walmart...will run you about $7.00/gallon is cheap and good too ....also Corta Flx UGuard Pellets too for milder cases Also what is really important is always having free choice top quality hay...Alfalfa especially in a slow feeder type hay net such as a nibble net or freedom feeder is important As well as feeding something low in starch/sugar like Triple Crown Senior or an extruded Feed like Progressive Nutritions Pro Elite HF ...or even plain soaked beet pulp, and a Ration Balancer wouuld be my diet recommendations! |

I use a daily powdered Ranitidine, it's $78 for a 2-month supply ordered through my vet from Wedgewood. The powder comes in a variety of flavors. I'll also get the giant bottles of Pepto Bismal from Costco and give my guy about 20 cc's either directly in his mouth or over his food. I've used U7, it's pricey...just switched to Smart Gut and I'll let you know how it goes. Only recently did I have my guy scoped, no ulcer (but we have always had him on the Ranitidine) and just some gastric acid. My mother has started feeding him Tums out of her hand as treats! Lol! Some vets say the compounded Omeprazole does not work, some say it does and the result is different for each horse. Good luck with everything! E |
