It's been a bazillion and one years since I've gotten a new martingale and had to deal with putting on a stopper so I've forgotten how to do it. My theory was that I should first put through the loop that hooks to the noseband and then slide one side of the neck strap through to get the stopper in the appropriate place. I tried to execute that plan last night and it was a big ol' thumb-nail breaking FAIL.

How the hell am I supposed to get the loopy thing through that tiny rubber hole? All the shoving and stretching I could muster didn't do any good.

Please tell me there is an easier way to do this?!!!!

Heat up the martingale stopper ring in very hot water, which will make it stretchy and easier to deal with!

What jn4jenny said, if it is really tight. 8 out of 10 times I can get it on without doing so, but if it is difficult that is the best way.

I assume I need to put it on while it is still warm from the water, correct?

Indy, yes - as hot as you can stand it. I also use a hoof pick for leverage but the doughnut usually softens enough in the hot water that you can manhandle it on there a little easier.

I put a piece of bailing twine through it to make it pull easier. Then I cuss and stomp my feed and throw it on the ground a few times until it finally just goes on.

I'm pleased to report that the little rubbery bastard is now on my martingale. It took two boils but it finally went on. And I hope I don't have to do this again for a really long time!
