You know what...? As cute as she is, I'd pass. I just don't like how her hind end is put together, combined with the itty bitty feet

I've known a couple of the bigger WP types and they haven't stayed sound enough to jump...
I'd have to agree with you.

I have to agree. She's super cute but I don't like her hind end at all in that photo and if she's got little feet then all the worse.

I grew up riding quarter horses and still do, and honestly prefer them over most anything else. A good quarter horse is worth its weight in gold. They are breeding big fancy long moving quarter horses for the hunter ring now. Good solid bone and good feet and a massive stride.

Most the guys with small feet are bred as halter horses, and even these days they are much better.

Its not too difficult to retrain to go hunters but make sure they have a level top line. Some western pleasure horses are bred a little butt high. You just have to spend the first bit working on sending them forward and straight. Most will lope shoulder out hip in. Reversing 'spur trained' is a bit of a pita but can be done with time.

As much as I loveeeee roan, be prepared for some hunter judges to hold it against you. Any mistake made will be easily remembered. Sigh.

With all that said, I don't think any of his offspring have been good hunter horses.

If you happen to chance on another QH bred, check if the breeding is related to Artful Move. He is a great cross over stallion and his kids do show USEF rated and have earned HOTY awards. He's a good one to look out for and they are generally tall. My girl is just a fluke stopping at 16h.

She also looks slab sided to me, which is probably why she felt small, I could be wrong and it could be due to her young age and not being "filled out" yet. But yeah, I'd pass on this one.

I agree with OI, I love a good QH, especially an Appendix. Best of both worlds in my opinion, which is why I have two of 'em! ;)

I love her color and hate her angles behind!

QHs are swell... some really good ones out there now for any discipline.

I know how hard it is to find what you are looking for... keep plucking away and you will fi d it. My pinto just fell into my lap for next to nothing - and i wasn't even looking for a second horse!

Agree with everyone else. I also agree with the recommendation to look for "Artful Move" offspring. But stay away from "Impressive Art".

There are a lot of Artful Move babies doing the As, many you would not realize are QHs.

I think another QH sire to look for is Sky Blue Walker. He's got the movement...and I think he's got quite a few that can actually jump, but I'm a little fuzzy on that.

I had Appendix QHs during my junior years -- I love them! I have tried to find another in my price range since then that would be competitive enough, but the ones I have all liked (size, movement, appearance) were all out of my price range, sigh. I have had a few since then that were stellar hunt horses, just not good enough movers for showing.

Yes, Artful Move, Sky Blue Walker, and Skys Blue Boy have all produced very nice A-show hunters. I have known some of their offspring that did NOT like to jump, but I would say about 90% of the ones I have known didn't have a problem with jumping.

Do make sure to radiograph front feet on the QHs.

Since AM has been around for a while, he was already a bright star when my girl was born and that was ten years ago, one thing that has been popping up is they are becoming known for being good jumping horses. This is in the AQHA hunt seat circles so take it for what it's worth, at least it's not for that "deep hock" canter/lope that makes me cringe every time I see it. Watch what crosses you get. They did go a WB route with his son Indian Artifacts, but it's just AWS/AWR bull. I have seen some nice typey AM/SBB crosses but on some of those SBB sons they have that QH hip of death. In my last conversation with AM's owners/managers, they liked putting AMs on Natural Iron/Iron Rule. Just something to look out for.

Of course I say this and my mare moves like a dressage horse, lol.
