Would still be pretty darn cute without the white. How come? Not like the white's going anywhere! |

I like this canter a lot better than his trot. A bit too much knee action for me but man he's got some big feet! I have no idea what the competition is like in the adults in your area but I think he could be a top B circuit contender in our area (which is quite competitive) but maybe not quite cut it on the A's. Hard to tell without seeing a jump but that's sometimes a leap of faith you have to take if you like their brain, movement, personality, etc. |

His trot isn't gorgeous but it's not the worst in the world either. And once he gets going a bit steadier and knows more where his legs go, it might get a bit better looking too. I like his canter much more than his trot. He's a big boy but he's not course and drafty to a fault. What would you be wanting to do with him? He's not going to win the hack at indoors, but I'm assuming that's not your goal. And at any show, the hack is only a small piece of the division so even if he is the world's worst mover it's not going to kill you completely over fences. I'd rather have a good canter than a good trot if I had to pick only one since, save for a handy class, you're going to be cantering all of your fences. If he's got a decent jump then you could be pretty competitive in smaller A shows and definitely B shows if you can get him going around nice and steady once he grows up. |

I think he looks like a big dopey baby who doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow...which is exactly what he should look like at that age. I agree that his trot will probably improve once he learns to use himself better, and he has a nice canter. As to being a hunter, you won't really know until you point him at a jump! |

Can you set up a little grid and free jump him? I think he is adorable, seems to have a good attitude for his age. I have a 17.3 WB and I can tell you he wasn't steer-able for years! If you do get him, take your time. These big boys take forever to grow up, and the slower you go with them the longer you will have them. But a good attitude/brain is critical, because it is LONG way down! |

I liked him better in the pictures, but he's three, most likely has not been work that much (I hope?), and he's on uneven footing to boot. I would want to put him through I shoot to see his form. I would think anything under 3ft would be a speed bump to him. I think if he doesn't grow anymore you could do him in the 3ft. You would do fine with the competition at Maffat lake and midstates because those are the nearest A/AA shows to Iowa. |

I feel the same about him, but I think he will eventually grow into a nice horse if he is brought along slower and let to mature at his own pace. I have seen a lot of horses that are his size and move the way he does end up with a lot of issues with too much work too soon. I'd also take a lot of xrays, do you know if he's clean? On the good side he's pretty damn well balanced for his size and age! That is a big plus as I bet his gaits will improve A LOT with age and work. And without seeing him jump I bet he has a decent one too. I think he would be a rewarding project. Edited by Kassandra, Mar 17 2012, 07:51 AM.

Agree that he's just a big dumb baby at this point...which is what he should be. His canter is nicer than the trot...which is easier to improve, IMO. Once he's figured out how to reach for the bit and move over his back, his trot will get quite a bit better. Still going to be too much knee for the big time, but he should do fine in the smaller time. And don't forget, people aren't going to overlook the white. They will see it and most will give him some extra leeway because of it. He's an attractive looking horse and it will win you some points. I would like to see him in a chute. It will give you an inkling of what he will do. FWIW, I put River through a chute right around 3 and he still jumps pretty much like he did in the chute. He gets a little better when the jumps are bigger, but the same technique is there. If you can't do a chute, put a pole out. You won't get an idea of his jumping style, but you will get an idea of his willingness to learn/attitude and what he will revert to when stressed. Geoff Teal says that you can tell a horse's tendencies just from using a pole on the ground. Does he go willingly, does he suck back and balk? Those attributes usually carry with them their entire life...and can give you a clue if you want to deal with those traits or not. I've found this to be true: Elf for sure falls back on exactly what he does over ground poles...rushed like the dickens at first and these days sucks back before them, I have to keep my leg on to make sure he maintains the rhythm. |

Thanks for all the great opinions. I'm going to try and see him in a chute before making any decisions. If they can't do it, I can build one in my arena. UPDATE - they are bringing him over to free jump next week. Suggestions for a grid? Just poles to X to vertical to oxer? Now how would you guys price him? Smiles - do you live in this area? We just got here in Sept so I haven't been to the shows to see what the competition and horse quality is like yet. It seems like at AA show or schooling. Not much in between. I would do a 9' placing pole to an X two strides to an X, if you can accommodate. If it goes well, you can make the second X a vertical and then an oxer...but I wouldn't go much over 2'3" or so, if he seems like he understands what your asking. You don't want to him to get overwhelmed. Price would really depend on the area. I have no idea what horses are going for in your region and I don't know how much training he really has. I would think $5-6k is fair for him, but that's kind of my budget range, especially for a young draft cross. Most breeders probably hate me: I think $10k for an average type 3 year old is ridiculous...and they seem to think it's what they are owed because it cost them that much to get the horse to 3 and backed, etc. |

I'd say here in my market he'd be more in the 3-5k range. But I'm in kind of an economically depressed area (well, moreso than the rest of the nation, lol!) I too like his canter better than his trot, but as the others said it will improve. He's not uber fancy but looks like he could be a solid citizen, and also agree you'll know more when you see him jump! Cute goofy baby tho! |

I think he's pretty darn cute, and should make a nice Adult horse.....am curious to see how he jumps, I'm betting pretty darn cute, not stell AO horse, but he reminds me of my Children's hunter Kramer scroll way down almost to the bottom... Such A Classic.. http://neighland.com/Sold I also am going to bet his movement will improve quite a bit when he gets more broke!! I too think he'd be cute without the chrome too, but it certainly adds to his cuteness, IMO!! :-) |

Snackpack, you and I have about the same budget range. They are asking 10k for this one and a similarly bred mare the same age. I think they are both way overpriced. |

Thank goodness you say that. I get SO FLIPPING TIRED of people trying to make me feel like I am being cheap with a 20k budget. On what planet is 20 thousand dollars not a lot of money? And I know damn well you CAN get a nice horse for 10k, and people WAY over inflate how much it takes to raise a horse when you have your own property. sigh. |
