Is the meadow on fire?

My new subdivision has a tropical theme and I was told my house had been a model house. I am not sure when this was ever in style... ![]() ![]() This was the hall bathroom. It was a typical long dark bathroom with the shower on the end. I just could not face the monkeys so I used the master bath. One afternoon, I thought I wonder if that wallpaper would come off easily. Two hours later, it was off. I have never removed wallpaper that easily before. No holes in the walls... ![]() Yes, a beautiful "hollywood" style light fixture too! One week later!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I still want to change out the faucet and will add to the decorating as I can. So, I started pulling the border in the kitchen...three hours later and I had not even got one foot off. And I was putting nicks in the wall! At least, it is not monkeys!!!!!!! There is zebra wallpaper in a bedroom, but it is actually kind of cute (in a "doesn't have to be done right now" kind of way). There is bamboo wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom, but that isn't horrible either. It is more subtle than the monkeys. The house was built in 2000. I can't imagine this was popular then! |

They are scarily similar to the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz, and those did some serious damage to my childhood.

Thanks everyone! Once you get on a roll, you want to do everything and quickly forget that it takes $$$$$$$$$$$$ to even make small changes. JF, the paint in the bathroom is a very deep chocolate brown. I will take note of the color tonight. I actually bought a second color to do as an accent wall. It had a bit of a shimmer to it. Kind of expensive, too. I got that up and hated it. I repainted the accent wall the same dark chocolate color. The shimmer paint might look good in a bigger area, but just looked streaky in the bathroom. So, the black kitchen is now bright blue. The cabinets are white, the counter tops are a dark charcoal and the breakfast area has beige walls. Behind the cabinets and the back splash area was black. It looked good when the back splash had a wallpapers border (broke it up a bit), but once that came off, it was too monochromatic. I picked a deep, saturated periwinkle (Valspar Stargazer) color. It looks very fresh and vibrant. As soon as it is done, I will get some pics. I will also take the zebras just for the cuteness factor. They are not creepy like the flying monkeys.

To save a lot of money (and aggravation) when removing wall paper don't buy the expensive blue gel gunk. Get a few cheap spray bottles, and get the really cheap store brand liquid fabric softener. Mix it 50/50 with water, and it will work just as well at the blue stuff, cost a lot less. Plus, since it comes in different colors (usually an whitish milky color is available) you don't have to clean it off of the trim and wash the walls down so much to get rid of the blue coloring the gel leaves. And don't feel that you goofed if the wall paper in certain rooms doesn't come off well. Apparently, there is a sizing (a type of primer) that they are supposed to put on the wall first, and it makes wall paper easier to apply and to remove. Many people skip this step during installation, and make it harder for everyone who follows. And I don't like accent walls-they seem to be old fashioned now, and I think having the walls match is nicer. And you notice on the tv redecorating and staging shows they use a tone lighter or darker than the rest of the room for accent walls, and it's the same flat latex too. |
