alright folks, the time has come for Trixie to be spayed...called the vet, made an appt, and the cost is a BIT more than I expected at $600 not including pain meds for afterwards. She is a 60ish lb lab, not in heat or pregnant. Does this sound typical or should I call around? |

It has been 9 years, but I recall that's in the same ballpark as what I paid when Delia was spayed. |

Is there a low cost spay/neuter clinic in your area? We have some in our area where you can get a spay done for like $50.

there is an organization called Spay VA where you can use vouchers to get a spay at your local vet... it will cost about $140. I have a call into them... |

That seems like a lot to me. I would call around. Are you a regular customer with this vet? |

For profit vet clinics in the DC area generally are really pricey. Last week, just to have my hound checked for a bee sting to a toe that he wouldn't walk on, my bill was $175 and I was thrilled that I was out of there for under $200. So for surgery under anesthesia, I'm not surprised at $600. That being said, groups like Spay VA would be a good way to go if they don't any requirements, e.g., they only spay dogs that have been adopted. |

I called around a lot when I got Kena. I had quotes anywhere from $315ish (what I paid) to $900 and they wanted to keep her overnight. My vet is also a large animal vet and owns a small (1 room) office out in the country so I think he can keep costs down. The closer I got into the city, the higher the price went! Definitely call around, but there's a lot to be said for having a vet you trust and she knows - if this is your regular vet. |

thanks guys, yes I need to see if there are requirements with Spay VA.... otherwise I will do that because I do know the participating vet, it's the local ER vet and we've been there, heard good things about them etc. I know my vet is one of the best surgeons in the area, but I can't imagine paying that much for a spay. We'll see... thanks guys! (oh and Delia I totally agree with you about the expense, however we are WAY out in the country, not anywhere near the city and this vet has otherwise been quite reasonable. |

Holy cow, that's ridiculous! I get all of my dogs spayed/neutered at one of our low cost clinics (I get all of their vaccines there as well). A spay is $65, and that includes 3 days of pain meds. They take great care of them too. Can't beat it! |

My adopted bitch's spay was a freebie, but I asked what the cost should have been, and was told around $150. I paid for extra pain meds. She was around 45 pounds at the time. |

Is Spay VA the same thing as Spay Inc? That's who I used but they only use certain vets but totally worth the savings! Good luck! |

IS there a Vet teaching school near you? You could see what that would run - they get taught, Trixie gets spayed. |

Lola was about 300.00 and that is way too much in my opinion....I can only imagine 600.00... No wonder there are TONS of unwanted dogs and cats....way too much to fix those girls... HH

That is just crazy. I haven't had the need to have a spay/neuter done for 5 or 6 years, so I don't know the current rate in our area. All of our adoptees were already fixed. The cat shelter where I volunteer has had to start using PETA for shots and spay/neuters. Something had to be done to keep expenses down. It was either that or closing the shelter. for finding a more reasonable option |

$600 does sound high. Did they explain the estimate to you? |
