I am a fan of loads of activity in the barn to desensitize everyone. ATV? bring it. Small children shooting 'hoops' down the aisle hollering? perfect. Barking and playing dogs? fine
Yeah, it's all fine every once in a while, maybe even regularly. But chaos all the time? I do like peace and quiet every once in a while, it's the reason I enjoy being outside with my horse.
I agree, and should have clarified that it wasn't constant by any means. But, I was not there all the time either ;)

Interesting mix of comments here. Thanks for the support.

For me, groundwork is the BASIS of everything else. I am not a lion tamer nor do I advocate kite flying (planting feet and flying horse around you in rapid circles). Forward is something that this horse has in spades. When I turn her lose I just move away and let her do what she likes for about 5-10 minutes, I just don't let her STOP and stand around during that time. Usually that entails and couple of trotting laps and a few head twists which is what I expected, that being said, every ONCE in a while, she looses her marbles and tears around like a beast, like every other horse on the planet. In Texas, she did that in the pasture. Not an option here and she has ALWAYS been the type of horse that needs a ten minute stretch before she can focus on work. She is what she is.

It's all good. Just had a bad day yesterday and took something personally that I shouldn't have. It's nothing compared to the "old" barn. Just growing pains and learning people's preferences. I already respected the BM (and did I mention I adore her??) but now I have a new level of respect for her.

Today is a new day. :)

I'm sorry that you are dealing with barn drama...part of why I like the peace of our small, private barn. But my real question is, how can Colorado have no turnout? I thought that was just for places around Los Angeles and other urban areas. I had no idea they didn't have turn out. When I was last out there, we went to meet a camel who was grazing in a huge field with horses. :innocent:
Yeah it was a surprise and a shocker to me too, RH. I didn't have a clue that there would be such limited turnout. I know water rights are a huge issue here when you buy property and you have to be "zoned" for horses with your wells and such. Not sure if that's the whole issue. Most barns are very "California" style. Pipe pens and attached stalls or huge barns with small turnouts for just a few hours per day (if you're lucky). Most of the horses I know that get turnout are at home. *le sigh*

My vet in Texas was shocked too. lol He said I, "destroyed his perfect vision of fat, shiny horses on huge green pastures in the cool summer sun".

Sounds like a **very** similar turnout situation to what we have here....total shock to the system after Ontario! And I agree, you have to do what it takes to keep the horse happy, not to mention between the rider and the ground...! I see too much "kite flying" here and don't love it. Bria seems ok without her run now that she's working hard and has something I'd actually classify as "turnout" Although I'm kinda dreading when it turns to mud and she's back to just having a sand run off her stall...

Your BM sounds awesome... could it be that you're in a place run by <gasp> ADULTS???

They have also announced that they will start the barn rennovations (which I knew about) at the end of October. The original plan was the leave the stalls with runs and work on the main barn until next summer. They have now changed their minds and will level EVERYTHING but the indoor barn, so all the horses have to go into stalls with NO runs. :( She will get a couple of hours of turnout in a roundpen daily, but OI! it is adding to the stress level. They "say" both arena will stay open, but we will see.

Good news is it's a HEATED Barn lol so *I* will certainly enjoy it more. lol

Jaci, not sure why you were apologizing but I guess as an olive branch, it worked. Very nice that the BM called and straightened things out and I am glad that you adore her.

I don't see that you did ANYTHING wrong. Why apologize for Luna getting her snorts and extra energy out, that's exactly why you let her lose.

I can't do that with Chaz anymore since he's the type that once in awhile gets running and I am afraid he will hurt himself. I used to do it weekly during the winter so that he could let the bucks out since they don't play much if the footing is bad outside. Made him much more rideable for the rest of the week. We have alot of folks that do it, particularly during the winter.

Either you can turn your horse lose in the indoor or you can't  Then while you are walking them out afterwards you fix the divets :innocent:

Have heard of a few barns requesting hoof pick out when leaving the arena. Just as easy to sweep it back in a couple of times a day.

Edited to mention that I too am really surprised by the lack of turn out there. That's a drag, particularly now with the renos starting. Good Luck, hope it works out. Glad you are back working with her though, that's awesome!
