Hey there, What kinds of mattresses does everyone have? Price Point (mattress and box spring) and quality/price/ comfort is of interest. I don't have thousands to spend, but I'm curious about YOUR mattress and how it works for you. What type of sleeper are you generaly as well.... I know i need a medium-firm or firm mattress, so if anyone has specific recommendations in that regard that would really help. I've been told the mattress itself (not boxspring) is like the foundation, and if you have a firm foundation, you can still put an overlay on top to make it more 'comfortable' without making it a 'soft' mattress. Is this true? I've only bought one mattress in oz, and i just tried a bunch and finally found one. But its ultimately hard to know until you've really slept on it for like a week or so. They're all a bit different. Thoughts/ Experiences/ Recommendations / Prices????? |

My best recommendation is to buy good quality and buy from somewhere that has a return policy. You will live with your mattress for 10 years or so and spend around 3 years of this time in it! That's CRAZY when you think about it - so spend the money to get something you really love. I not long ago bought a Tempurpedic and LOVE it. It was pricey, but so worth it. My back and shoulders (I'm a stomach/side sleeper) are MUCH improved. I didn't want to spend the money the last time I bought a new mattress, but I'm glad I did this time around. But many better mattress retailers will offer some return policy or allow you to relatively inexpensively buy some guarantee. As for when you go shopping, take your pillow, some magazines, and some shoes you can easily kick off then go make yourself at home. Lie on them for at least 20 minutes in all different positions, including the ones you sleep in the most. Spend time sitting on them and such. I spend a couple hours testing mattresses every time I do (and I have a bunch in the last several years - my old mattress that is now in my guest room, my mom's mattress when she asked me to go buy her one, the mattress on my bed at my mom's, and now my new mattress) |

Oh, and another thing I learned from a friend of mine who owned furniture stores - you will test some reasonably inexpensive mattresses that are just as comfortable as the more expensive mattresses but many times these don't hold up as well. They are great for beds that don't get used every day (a guest room) but the quality isn't as good as ones that are more costly. |

I don't remember, but I do remember that mattress stores were extremely negotiable on price. I think I got a $1400 mattress for $700, or something, and it wasn't a floor model. |

We bought the store's version of the Tempurpedic....and its the best money I EVER spent. Besides the GHH, lol. DH and I sleep so much better. I think ours is the brand Dormia. Our first major purchase as a couple. |

The one we sleep on is a Winndom Comfort Custom (memory foam top) and is very comfy, but it's a local brand (made here in VA). I just recently stayed in a Westin hotel and I have to say, their "Heavenly" bed was suuuuuuper comfy. I think it's made by Simmons? I'd definitely consider that one next time I shop. |

I just went through the mattress shopping thing too. I ended up with a Simmons BeautyRest that is supposedly a plush-firm. So yes, it's firm underneath with a softer top. So it's stable, but cushy, if that makes sense. I love it! And just FYI, mattresses are CRAZILY marked up - there's plenty of room for bargaining, so don't buy the first one you like. Get your info before you actually buy it so you get a fair price. Dad helped me get mine down $300, free delivery and setup, and a free frame. I would have paid around $1735 or so, instead of $1200. |

I have seen commercials lately for a Temperpedic knock-off by Serta. And I buy appliances and mattresses from a great regional place (HH Gregg) and they bargain like crazy, and have great sales on mattresses, so the huge chains may not be the place to get a great deal. I would find a place that carries either a good selection of the brand you want, or a place that carries a lot of different brands so you can try a great selection. Definitely, go with the setup assistance, since I can put frames together, but it's always painful (I almost always rip a few chunks of skin off). Have you looked at IKEA? They have great style, and a good warranty, plus they have plain frames and fancier frames also. If you want a good store guarantee then only deal with places that will be there for a few years (bet you can't guess how I found that one out). Keep all paperwork, labels, and don't take the tags off or they might not take it back. You don't want to skimp on price either, and as someone pointed out you'll spend a third of your life with this mattress, and a proper fit for your body and sleep style is critical. If you're short on storage space you might consider a platform bed with drawers included. And with some frames and platform beds you only buy a mattress I think. Over the years I've had nicer grades of Serta, Sealy and my current one is a King Koil, but you really have to try the mattresses out for at least 15 or 20 minutes. And don't forget the depth is crucial for sheet fit, and my 12 or 13 inch depth pillow top (it's hard not to get a pillow top these days) takes a fitted sheet that fits 18" or more (I guess the depth they say they fit is not accurate at all). |

JanM, is that the iComfort or whatever they're calling it? I almost got that one, but decided I liked the one I got more than enough and didn't want to spend the extra $$$. Also since it's so new, I wanted to see what consumers said about it first since it's some new technology. Do you like it? |

I think that's it, but I agree with the waiting for consumer reviews idea too. I think it would be awful to buy something like a mattress or other household item that costs a lot, and then hate it and be stuck. |

I read all your replies and agree entirely. Bargain, try, take time, don't skimp. I ended up finding one last night and it is either a Serta or Sealy (i forgot the reciept in the car...will confirm later). But it is a firm mattress and it does have a firm pillowtop with latex and memory foam. So it should be good. It retailed around 1500, and we got it for 999. We also bought the 3 month guarantee so that if we need to change it, they'll do it for free (pick up/ drop off/ exchange). So that makes me a bit more at ease with the decision. Thanks ladies! |

This apparently is what happens when ETBW and I go mattress shopping. And to the circus. Except not to the circus, but there was a circus. Sorry the pictures are gone, but you get the idea. |
