I haven't read all the responses here, but I will say that the people I know who have Hondas of any kind love them. The CR-V will also get you all wheel drive. I have a 2010 Subaru Outback that I bought new. I LOVE it. It's the first year of the re-design, so it has a bigger back seat and better gas mileage than the older ones. And Subarus have the reputation of lasting forever, so I hope to keep mine for many years. Not sure if you could find a used 2010 or newer for your budget, but I bet you could. The older ones are nice too. |

How green is a Prius? Where does the power to charge the batteries come form? Where does one dispose of the batteries at the end? When you factor in all the parts and pieces how really green is the Prius? |

I don't mean to high-jack the thread, but since you're car shopping.......I'd like to know where everyone looks when buying a car. I will soon be selling a car and if it is not sold via word of mouth, I have no idea where to place an ad. |

I can answer part of this. You charge the batteries when you brake, when you coast and lastly whenever the gas engine kicks in, but mainly when you brake. At highway speeds, your gas engine is running; if you're in the mall parking lot, looking for a space, it probably won't be (unless your AC is running full blast). There's a graphic on the dash that shows you when you're charging the battery. Unlike the all-electric cars, you don't ever plug a Prius into anything. I'm not sure what happens to the batteries after the car is done for, but I would bet good money that someone on priuschat.com knows. Those people are *fanatics* (in the best way) about the Prius, and I lurked there a while before and right after we bought our Prius. At any rate, I cannot imagine they are not required to be recycled in some way. Is it a perfect technology? Hardly. But then what technology truly is perfect? I feel it is a step in the right direction, and that's why I bought one. I'm really glad to hear that someone on here has a 2010 Outback (post-redesign) ... DH and I are looking at that as well as the Forester to replace the 2005 Forester, but for now we're just window shopping, as the 2005 is still going along just fine. |

RNB - please consider posting your car for sale on Cars.com! (full disclosure...I work there!) onwego... have you thought about a Mini Cooper? They're a really cute car, have great performance, and are supposed to be pretty safe. Of course, you can always research them on Cars.com! (sorry, is the Cars.com thing getting annoying?) |

I've thought about the Minis but they are apparently expensive to maintain and also my dog wouldn't fit in it with me either. Not to mention I would be terrified of getting in an accident in it because they are so small. I need to find the time to get out there and start test driving different cars. |

How big is your dog? ![]() She's just a lab, right? The "little" cars really aren't all that little. I can fit two large dogs easily in my car...three if I let one sit in front. I know you have other reasons for not wanting a little car...but I'm pretty sure you're dog would fit in one just fine.

Haven't read the whole thread, but as a Subaru owner, keep in mind that they ARE a luxury brand and the repair costs/parts come at luxury prices. And on your budget, you may be looking at an older Subie. Even stuff that's fairly routine, like shocks/struts/brakes, will be more expensive on a Subie than on a Honda/Toyota/Ford/etc. I love mine because it's among the most fuel-efficient vehicles that can still pull my Brenderup Solo, but next time I may go with the Toyota RAV4 AWD instead. It's cheaper to own and repair. Edited by jn4jenny, Sep 16 2011, 08:32 PM.

I have a Volvo S40 2.4i, and I absolutely ADORE this car. It's an '04, and I bought it in '07 when it came off its lease (I don't buy new cars, you lose too much value as soon as you drive off the lot). It's fun to drive (has tiptronic shifting as well as automatic), VERY comfy (leather, seat heaters), and the gas mileage is in the high 20's/low 30's (when I drove from VA to CO I averaged 34-36 miles per gallon, IIRC). Because it was previously leased and not owned, the previous driver had treated it like gold and I felt comfortable buying a 3 year old car. It was spotless inside and out and had very low mileage. It's a small car, but with front wheel drive and all weather tires does pretty darn good in the CO snow, and the trunk is HUGE. I can't say enough good things about my little Volvo. I've had it exactly 4 years and have NEVER had a problem with it - I swear, you couldn't kill it with an atom bomb. And because I got it off a lease, I walked out of the dealership having paid just under $20k, including taxes, title and tags. My next car will definitely be another Volvo - probably the S60 with the Turbo and AWD. I'd love another S40, but for some reason they are only making them with black leather interiors anymore, and here in the sunny state of CO that's just murder. The S60 is only slightly bigger, and it has the option of beige leather, so my car won't be cooking when I get into it between May and October. |
